Surveillance The adult mosquito surveillance program started on June 18, 2017. Adult mosquitoes are collected weekly from mosquito traps at 33 fixed locations throughout the region of Peel until late September. To date, 1155 mosquito batches have been tested for WNV and 112 have tested positive. This week one positive batch was collected from Brampton.

There are seven human cases of WNV reported in Peel.

Mosquito Reduction The larviciding program started on June 1, 2017 and will continue until September 30, 2017. Larviciding involves applying environmentally friendly products to reduce mosquito larvae in stagnant water.

The third round of larviciding is completed. The first round was indicated by a blue dot on the catch basin grate, the second round was indicated by a purple dot and the third round is indicated by a green dot. It takes at least three weeks to complete a round of larviciding. There will be three rounds of roadside catch basin larviciding this year.

Larviciding of catch basins in the green spaces of parks in Peel has been completed. The treatment of surface water sites on public lands is ongoing.

Public Education Reduce your risk of WNV by removing stagnant water on your property:

° Empty or dispose of containers that can hold water, such as old tires, wheelbarrows, barrels, pails, toys and recycling bins ° Turn over wading pools, remove water that collects on pool covers and make sure the pool’s pump is circulating

Protect yourself from being bitten by:

1 of 2 ° Avoiding areas with large numbers of mosquitoes ° Wearing light-coloured clothing, including long sleeves, long pants, socks and a hat whenever you are outdoors (even in your backyard), especially at dusk and dawn ° Use an insect repellent and apply it according to the manufacturer's directions

WNV in Ontario To date there have been 404 WNV-positive mosquito batches found in Ontario, from 27 different health units: Brant County, Chatham-Kent, Durham Region, Eastern Ontario, Halton, Haliburton- Kawartha-Pine Ridge, Hamilton, Hastings and Prince Edward County, Huron, Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, Lambton, Leeds-Grenville-Lanark, Middlesex-London, Niagara, Northwestern, Ottawa, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Peterborough County, Renfrew County, Simcoe-Muskoka, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph, Windsor-Essex County and York.

There have been 123 human cases of WNV illness reported in Ontario, 22 from Toronto, 18 from Windsor-Essex, 17 from Ottawa, eight from York, seven from Peel, six each from Halton, Niagara and Simcoe-Muskoka, three each from Durham, Hamilton, Eastern Ontario, Grey Bruce, Leeds-Grenville-Lanark, Peterborough County and Waterloo, two each from, Haliburton- Kawartha-Pine Ridge, Sudbury and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph, and one each from Haldimand- Norfolk, Hastings Prince Edward, Middlesex-London, Perth District, Renfrew and Timiskaming.

WNV in Canada As of September 16, 2017 there have been WNV-positive mosquito batches found in Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan. There are six human cases from Quebec, three from Alberta and one each from British Columbia and Manitoba.

WNV in United States As of September 19, 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported a total of 47 states with West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes.
