 An Arctic ice cap (also known as a ) is a region of made up of thick ice in the North and South Pole, which is found in the Arctic region. WHY IS THE ARCTIC ICE CAP MELTING?

 The melting is caused by the overall increase in global temperature, which has caused serious consequences for all organisms. The warming is mainly caused by carbon dioxide.

 The melting of the polar ice cap is creating more burning of fossil fuels, coal, gas and oil; which causes the temperature to go up significantly.

 The Arctic ice helps to regulate the by keeping it cool, so the ice doesn’t melt. As this melts, heat from the sun is absorbed by the oceans melting the ice. Small temperature changes in the Arctic can effect weather all over the world. As the ice melts the climate changes.

 Erosion occurs through a continuous movement, which is created from the oceans waves. The movement results in something called a “wave cut” that can affect the melting of the ice cap. The wave cut will cause cracks and large indents in the ice caps letting in more melting it at a faster pace. The wave cut could eventually cause the ice cap to collapse from all of the heat and pressure. This could lead to a loss of stability and capsizing.  Climate change will drastically affect multiple natural resources in a variety of ways. Some Coastal regions (including a bunch of countries around the world) will be flooded due to the climate change. The flooding is caused by the drastic changes in the rising ocean levels. Some of the effects include: rising ocean levels, coastal regions of countries being impacted, ocean currents being disrupted and the climate change has been altered.

 Scientists are concerned that carbon dioxide and that are being released could cause additional warming by adding extra greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is already causing some of the warming and melting of the ice cap., so extra greenhouse gases being released will make the problem even worse.

 Its affecting the animals that live in the icy region, if the ice is melting and continues to melt it will affect their habitats and the way they live. The types of animals include: polar bears, seals, whales and walruses.

 Greenland’s ice sheet is melting at a fast rate. The melting will affect the sea , fisheries, and the coastal communities worldwide.

This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-ND WHAT EFFECTS WILL THE CHANGES TO GREENLAND’S ICE SHEET HAVE ON THE HYDROSPHERE?

 The melting of the will severely raise the sea levels. As land ice melts it will add even more to the oceans along with the ice on the surface. This causes the water to rise, and potentially flood. HOW IS THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE HYDROSPHERE AFFECTED BY THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP?

 The ice caps help regulate the global temperatures and sea levels. When ice melts it expands, so if all of the ice was to melt the sea level would rise a ton. This would cause a lot of flooding, ruining homes causing many people to go homeless. Without regulations the hydrosphere wouldn’t be sustainable, and people wouldn’t be able to live.

This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA HOW MUCH HAVE ANIMALS SUCH AS POLAR BEARS, WALRUSES AND SEALS BEEN AFFECTED?

 Polar bears need ice to travel from one region to another. The polar bears will have to go longer without food if there was less/no ice left. Polar bears are unlikely to survive if there was an ice loss, they will die without it.

 The seals give birth and nurse their pups on the ice. Seals live near and under the ice. It is very unlikely they will be able to adapt on land, they rarely go on land in the first place. It would be a very dramatic change for them to have to live on land. Its more dangerous for them to give birth on land because it exposes the pups to a higher risk of being killed by predators. The seals need the ice to survive.

 The walruses are very sensitive to climate change. Ice is the ideal location for resting and feeding because walruses are the bottom feeders that eat clams and other shellfish. They need ice to get from one region to another, also to get closer to their food. Without ice they wouldn’t be able to feed themselves.

 There are invasive species never seen before that are appearing, species that usually don’t live in the are. It makes it harder for native people to hunt them, villages will be unprotected because of the flooding problem. They are in danger.

 The Greenland and ice sheets influence day to day weather and long term climate. The sun contributes to warm oceans which melts the ice cap; as well as the sun reflecting of the water.

This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA HOW DOES THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP SHOW THAT THE ’S SPHERES ARE INTERCONNECTED?

 All four spheres can be included in a single location. The Arctic ice cap shows that in the Arctic region the hydrosphere is the ice, , and ocean water. The atmosphere is the air, the biosphere are the living organisms, and the geosphere is every part of the region (structure). As the ice is melting it affects the hydrosphere by adding to the rising ocean levels. The melting of the Arctic ice cap is affected by the sun’s warming of the atmosphere. The melting of the Arctic ice cap is also negatively affecting the biosphere by impacting the lifestyles of humans and animals. DO YOU THINK THE MELTING OF THE ARCTIC ICE CAP COULD BE CONSIDERED A GLOBAL PROBLEM? WHY OR WHY NOT?

 Yes, I believe the melting of the Arctic ice cap is a global problem because it impacts the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and the geosphere. These spheres are all over the world and not just in the Arctic region. If something was to change drastically like the melting of the ice, all oceans around the world would be impacted as well as all the surrounding animals and people. It is also a global problem because the melting of the Arctic ice cap affects the atmosphere by adding extra greenhouse gases. The melting also contributes to an increase in global warming which melts the ice caps even more at a faster rate.  https://www.bing.com/search?q=what+is+the+arctic+ice+cap&qs=HS&pq=wh&sc=8- 2&cvid=2BCDF44D3BBE4F9793A6838C546F8D83&FORM=QBRE&sp=1
