News Seivices 3191273-2761 C,d.,Fall,,Iowa ews 7/8/87 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TOM PETTIT TO DELIVER PUBLIC ADDRESS AT UNI MONDAY (JULY 13) CEDAR FALLS-Tom Pettit, NBC's chief national affairs correspondent, will speak about his journalism experiences at 7 p.m. Monday (July 13) on the Uniyersity of Northern Iowa campus. Pettit, who is on the Cedar .Falls campus during July to teach two broadcasting courses for the Department of Communication and Theatre. Arts, will speak in Room 108 of ' the Communication Arts Center. His address is open ~o the public free of charge. Pettit is teaching a seminar .,o,n "National El.ection Coverage Methodologies, .. through July 17. · 'l'he course is focusing on a description of methodologies et!lPloyed by broadcast journalists in providing fair and impartial coverage of candidates and iHues during po~itical campaigns. Among the issues under discussion are FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulations, network cOIIIJlitments, the role of caucuses and primaries and historical perspectives. Pettit will teach a second seminar on '"Public Affairs Reporting Methodologies," July 20-31. The course will address the role of public affairs reporters in con­ temporary American society, including the coverage of government issues ·at the state, national and international levels. 'l'he subject will be treated in an historical framework focusing on major figures of the news industry. Source identification, information retrieval, protection of sources and other practical advice on public affairs reporting. Pettit is currently covering the Iran-Contra investigation, the Persian Gulf crisis and the presidential campaigns. He will be NBC's chief correspondent at. both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions next summer. Pettit is a 1953 graduate of UNI and began his broadcasting career as a reporter for WOI-TV in ~• He also worked at KCRG-TV, Cedar Rapids and WCCO-TV, Minneapolis, before joining NBC News as a repor.ter for WRCV in Philadelphia. -30-.

Blumberg of the journalism school. Pettit has been a member of the NBC news staff since 1959 when he became a reporter for NBC-owned WRCV in Philadelphia.

    NBC News' Tom Pettit 'NeLisec, les Saw Oswald Shot By Verne Gay Tom Pettit, one of the premiere political reporters in TV news history, died yesterday following surgery . for kruptuked aorta, Pettit, 64, had undergone a kid- ney transplant some months ago but had suffered •from complications. Pettit was the only TV newsman who was on the scene when Lee Harvey Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby on Nov. 24, 1988. De- spite the chaos that ensued, Pettit's trademark clipped voice conveyed the details of the shooting without emotion • or strain. NBC News, which Pettit hadloined only a year • earlier, had the major scoop in the wake of the JFK assas- sination.. But Pettit's career went be- yond being in the right place at the right time. He also made an hour-long report on • chemical,and biological war- Photo fare which aired on the NBC Tom Pettit News magazine, "First 'rues- day" in 1969. The report led to changes in federal law. "He was above all a hell of a reporter," said Reuvom • Frank former NBC News president, who had ap- pointed Pettit an executive vice presdent in 1982. "I • •think he was one of the very first reporters who did it all on television. He never worked for a newspaper, but started out in a tiny station in Iowa that was so poor that whenever they sent him out on a story, they sent him out with a Polaroid." Tom Pettit dies, was award­ winning journalist and UNI alumnus Tom Pettit, an award-winning TV reporter and 1953 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa (then Iowa State Teacher's College), died in December 1995 following heart surge1y complicati ons. He was 64. Pettit, who retired from NBC ews earlier in 1995, was honored with three Emmys , a Peabody Award and the Polk Memo ri al Award in a career that stretched from the Eisenhower era to the Clinton administration. Pettit gained wide fa me with his 1963 report from outside the Dallas City Jail. Standing only six feet away, Pettit was the onl y broadcaster on the scene and on the air when Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald. Born in Cincinnati, Pettit grew up in Iowa and graduated from Waterloo West High School.
