News Seivices 3191273-2761 C,d.,Fall,,Iowa ews 7/8/87 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TOM PETTIT TO DELIVER PUBLIC ADDRESS AT UNI MONDAY (JULY 13) CEDAR FALLS-Tom Pettit, NBC's chief national affairs correspondent, will speak about his journalism experiences at 7 p.m. Monday (July 13) on the Uniyersity of Northern Iowa campus. Pettit, who is on the Cedar .Falls campus during July to teach two broadcasting courses for the Department of Communication and Theatre. Arts, will speak in Room 108 of ' the Communication Arts Center. His address is open ~o the public free of charge. Pettit is teaching a seminar .,o,n "National El.ection Coverage Methodologies, .. through July 17. · 'l'he course is focusing on a description of methodologies et!lPloyed by broadcast journalists in providing fair and impartial coverage of candidates and iHues during po~itical campaigns. Among the issues under discussion are FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulations, network cOIIIJlitments, the role of caucuses and primaries and historical perspectives. Pettit will teach a second seminar on '"Public Affairs Reporting Methodologies," July 20-31. The course will address the role of public affairs reporters in con temporary American society, including the coverage of government issues ·at the state, national and international levels. 'l'he subject will be treated in an historical framework focusing on major figures of the news industry. Source identification, information retrieval, protection of sources and other practical advice on public affairs reporting. Pettit is currently covering the Iran-Contra investigation, the Persian Gulf crisis and the presidential campaigns. He will be NBC's chief correspondent at. both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions next summer. Pettit is a 1953 graduate of UNI and began his broadcasting career as a reporter for WOI-TV in ~• He also worked at KCRG-TV, Cedar Rapids and WCCO-TV, Minneapolis, before joining NBC News as a repor.ter for WRCV in Philadelphia. -30-.
