Abu Dhabi 2019 Media COMMUNIQUE Issue 1 | 10 January 2019 Introduction: Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 Media Communiqué, which will provide you with key updates on what will be the world’s biggest sports and humanitarian event of 2019. There are just 3 days to go until 7,500 of the most inspirational athletes in the world gather in the UAE for the World Games. The event will be the most unified in the 50-year history of the Special Olympics movement, involving people with intellectual disabilities in every aspect of the event. The record number of participating athletes and Unified Partners, including the highest number of women to ever participate in a Special Olympics World Games, will compete in 24 officially sanctioned Olympic-style sports across 11 venues in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, while the build-up to the Games will be a nationwide celebration with the Law Enforcement Torch Run® and the Host Town program take place in all seven emirates of the UAE. The event will act as a catalyst for inclusion, building a lasting legacy of improved health, education, and opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities long after the Closing Ceremony of the World Games. Media Communiques will be issued on a weekly basis in the run-up to the World Games and we look forward to sharing the latest news and information with you as we count down to the start of this exciting sports competition and cultural Olympiad in March.
