REFLECTIONS… ‘In Homelessness, God’s Love Is Still With Us…’

These words, declared by towards an earthquake shattered cathedral in the centre of devastated Christchurch a few days ago, brought home to me the commanding power and authoritative reality of the spiritual in our everyday lives. Bishop Matthews presided over a short church service of de- of the cathedral and reduced the building to the status of an ‘ ruin.’ Those attending gave respectful thanks for the Christian witness established in the centre of the city by Bishop Henry Harper in 1881. During the service those attending intoned ‘We did not treat this space as we would ordinary space, but as we would treat the very presence of God.’

In her message the Bishop focused on hope, saying: ‘In homelessness, God’s love is still with us and this is not a time to lose hope. We need to move on, knowing that what God has in store for us is more magnificent. We are a work in progress. It is the mission that matters, let us be a pilgrim people, a people of the resurrection.’ And in the formal de- consecration, Bishop Matthews declared: ‘I do remit this building, and all objects remaining in it, for any lawful and reputable use, according to the laws of this land. This building, having now been deconsecrated and secularized, I declare to be no longer subject to my canonical jurisdiction.’

And so the people of this city now move further into changed realities and many uncertainties. But the city of Christchurch is also a place God has chosen to raise up a Christian Community, the Lamb of God. And through eight thousand earthquakes, with nineteen damaged homes of which half are seriously damaged, with our cluster area in a precarious situation, our main school and church demolished, our high school colleges 2 unusable, and with the Lamb of God Centre in part significantly damaged - we are still here, and thus far we have held together and lost no one. We still meet, we still give thanks, we still praise, we still run Healing Meeting with Fr John, we are still running Summer Oasis and EDGE Conferences, and the Single Men’s Household, and we still give generously of what we have, and God is undoubtedly with us. Truly we know the reality that in homelessness, God’s love is still with us…

So brothers and sisters of the Lamb of God let us continue to ‘face into the storm’ as God’s people. We cannot say we are through it yet, we cannot say we are nearly there, we cannot say we are over the worst. What we can say is we belong to the Lord and that He is with us, what we can say is ‘I’ll be there for you’, what we can say is ‘we journey this together’, and what we can say is we do have hundreds of Lamb of God members nationwide who are with us and generously there for us, and worldwide we have thousands standing with us in prayer and resource in the Sword of the Spirit. And here on the home front, right in the cluster, God willing you can count that Veronica and I are staying. We are going nowhere, and we are retiring nowhere until we are through these momentous and challenging times with you, our people. Roger Foley: Senior Coordinator OUR PEOPLE… Congratulations!  To Neil Menezes [Auckland] who has been selected by The Rotary Science Forum to participate and interact with other students who have excelled in Science (NZ and Australia). Well done Neil and all the very best at the forum with the Science /Engineering guys from the 14th to 28th January 2012.  Jo and Anila Collins [Auckland] with the arrival of their son Joshua.

NEWS AND ARTICLES

SOUTH ISLAND LOCATIONS TO BECOME ONE BRANCH REGION

The Lamb of God Community has functioned in five Regions for many years, being the Auckland Region [West and East Districts], Central Region [Napier and Wellington Branches], Nelson-Blenheim Region [Nelson and Blenheim], Christchurch Region [Christchurch Branch and Kaikoura and Ashburton Mission Groups] and the Southern Region [Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Balclutha and Invercargill]. In 2012 we will be restructuring to three Regions from five, with all of our South Island works and mission becoming one Branch Region. Senior Coordinator Roger Foley says ‘this restructure has been under consideration for over three years and it makes a lot of sense in managing our resources and maximising opportunities. The devastating earthquakes of the past fourteen months have certainly demonstrated how committed together we are. We have been severely tested and the Lord has brought us through in an amazing display of , service of each other, and love. We are ready for this new challenge in taking our relationships and service of each other to a deeper level.’ 3 CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE UPDATE from ROGER

In November the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority opened up the Central City Red Zone Cordon for the first time to a limited number of special bus tours for the public to see first-hand, and close up, the magnitude of the damage to our city. I made application immediately and was assigned a seat on the third bus in and departing just twenty minutes after the cordon was opened. It was necessary to observe a required dress code, particularly regarding adequate footwear, and to acknowledge verbally that you understood you were entering an area of potential danger in which should there be another significant earthquake whilst you were inside, you may be trapped, and even die inside the cordon.

It was very impacting, and so very sad [refer the photographs] and I came out with a significant headache. When you see it close up it was an absolute miracle that thousands did not die. The damage is almost beyond comprehension and overwhelming to try to take in. I have no argument with the way the restrictions and cordons have impacted our lives this past fourteen months. It was and is necessary in what is like a war-zone in the downtown area.

The tour made me aware we live in dramatic times that have shaken the city and nation, and times that will shape the future of Aotearoa. I am glad I live here, grateful we have come through thus far, and blessed to journey these days in a great family, and in a very real and committed Christian Community. This experience strengthened my love for the city and its people and strengthened my resolve that you will not move me from Christchurch. Roger.

TOM AND MHEL ON THE MOVE…

This month we see an important inter-branch move when Tom and Mhel Caballes and family relocate from Auckland to Wellington. Tom and Mhel are making this important move in order to ‘keep the family together’ as their daughter Clarese commences university study in the New Year. However it is also a significant move for the Lamb of God as Tom and Mhel will add their wealth of experience in community living and building to serve as formation leaders in our fast growing Wellington Branch. They will add their experience in assisting the current leadership team. We thank Tom and Mhel for their contribution these many years in serving and building in Auckland, and we welcome them into the Wellington Branch. The Lord is good. Roger and Veronica 4 SOUTH ISLAND WOMEN’S WEEKEND AT HANMER SPRINGS

The recent Women’s Weekend at Hanmer Springs was a wonderful success and well attended with sisters participating from Nelson, Blenheim, Southern, and Christchurch Branches plus our friends from the Light of Community. The theme ‘Daughters Come, be Restored in the Lord’ became a reality as the stress and strain of fourteen months of earthquakes was ‘ministered away’ and as the Lord moved through an excellence of teaching and an anointing of worship. Thank you Lord! Veronica on behalf of the Leadership Team

OUR WORK IN FIJI IS EXPANDING…

The Lamb of God Christian Community has been working in the Fiji Islands since 1998. Our main work has been of a missionary nature in sending teams of our youth to work under supervision to serve in works of mercy in mainly deprived socio-economic areas and to also serve churches and mission organizations in their work. This has been of benefit not only to the Fijian people in areas where we have assisted in ventures such as building flood retention walls, cleaning up rubbish from streets and drains under police supervision, digging out building foundations, then hand mixing concrete and setting reinforcing rods, and carrying heavy building materials up scaffolding towers on mission station construction sites. Our own youth have also greatly benefited. They have been exposed to a different culture with the richness and challenge that this brings, lived in situations of challenge and been exposed to faith in the face of hardship and extreme poverty. One of our teams witnessed my wife Veronica being attacked and robbed in front of their eyes. Each experience is different but each also adds to life experience and maturity.

In recent years the Lamb of God has been building a Christian Community in a challenging region of Nadi. It is a significantly exposed flood prone area with much surrounding poverty. But the Lord is blessing this work with growth and the new group is growing and has now itself reached out to start other groups in Lautoka, Ba, Tavua and RakiRaki.

The Lamb of God, together with this new community, is now also reaching out to a twenty-two unit compound caring for mainly abandoned women. We have gifted thousands of dollars, second hand guitars and keyboards, dozens of Bibles, reading glasses and more to these works. In our most recent trip, just last week, we have gifted a semi-commercial sewing machine from our Nelson Branch, and over 100 used and new reading glasses which were donated by members and friends from all over New Zealand. Donated eyeglasses…appreciated! Future needs in Fiji - we are now turning our attention to the Fiji work for next year and we already have a ‘2012 needs list’ in compilation. At the top of the list we have requests from two new Christian Community groups we are assisting, one in Ba and the other in Tavua. Both have asked if we can assist with a second hand guitar and keyboard. If you can help, the Lamb of God Mission team can get the equipment into Fiji and to these groups. 5

Helping to sponsor young Fijian men to train in New Zealand - next year I am hoping we can bring two young men to the Lamb of God to participate in the Single Men’s Summer Household training and to attend our Summer Oasis and EDGE Conferences in January. If you have any ability to financially help then please consider if you are able. This sort of training can be invaluable and the benefits long term once the young person returns to Fiji better equipped to follow the Lord and themselves minister and serve. Contact Roger on 021 817 232 or email [email protected].

FR JOHN REA IS ASKING FOR OUR ASSISTANCE…

Great news - Fr John was recently gifted an Apple Ipad [I think that is so neat to hear…] whilst ministering in Perth and this has encouraged him to take every opportunity to write his second book. It will be entitled ‘Proclaim with Wonders'. And he has written asking for our help! He would like to hear from people regarding miracles they have been associated with in some way. This does not need to necessarily be associated with ministry the Lord operates through Fr John himself. He is especially interested to learn of signs and wonders being associated with evangelizing others.

If you have Fr John’s email address then email him directly. If you do not have his email address you can send your witness to [email protected] and we will pass it on. If you are not on email you can address mail to ‘Fr John at Lamb of God Community’, Box 35 054, Christchurch.

KAIROS WELLINGTON SAUSAGE SIZZLE

On the 5th of November at 8.30am, I turned the corner onto Tory St; still half-asleep, but in good spirits. I smiled and waved as I saw two adults from the Lamb of God in Wellington, moving equipment out of their cars. A squeaking noise attracted my attention as a staff member from Bunnings wheeled a huge sign on wheels out into the courtyard. The sign read “Youth Camp Sausage Sizzle.” Afterwards, I was standing in front of a barbeque, turning over sausages and frying onions. By 9.30 we had already sold a few sausages and a lady had just come by asking for eight! By the time I had finished my ‘shift,’ we had already gone through two bags and Tito [Uncle] Jaison had to go and buy some more! Although I wasn’t there for the whole day, I heard some other funny stories from the other Kairos members and adults who helped out during the remainder of the day. It was a great day, the weather was fine and it was a chance to get 6 together as a community and fundraise for a good cause. We all enjoyed ourselves and God gave us lots of customers which meant we raised a generous amount of money for Summer Oasis next year. However we still have to raise more money, and to do this we are going to go caroling for Christmas. Nicola O’Malley

‘WACKY TACKY’ GAMES – AUCKLAND BRANCH

The Auckland branch recently had a Social Night starting with a Lord’s Day celebration and follow up by ‘Wacky Tacky’ Games. The brothers and sisters were group together as team of house groups and made to compete with various ‘wacky’ games. The National Council met earlier and they joined the festivities later. It was a fun night, seeing Roger dance the hula with the single sisters and Bill McElhinney leading their group in challenging the Haka, similar to what the French team did at the Rugby world cup finals! 7 CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes Growing in the Fruit of the December 2011

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

Before becoming involved with Christian community, I cannot understand in real terms how to grow in the fruit of the Holy Spirit. I thought it was a mistake - we should grow in the fruits of the Holy Spirit – not singular. I found out later on that the fruit of the Holy Spirit is making our lives be conformed to the character of Christ. So how do I become more loving, peaceful, joyful, kind, patient, gentle and self-controlled? I need to look at Jesus and see how I conform more and more like Him. Simply, growing in the fruit of the Spirit is: Becoming more like Jesus.

So How Do We Grow in the Fruit of the Holy Spirit? 1. We need to make Jesus the Lord of our whole life, not just part of our life. It will simply not work otherwise. Our decisions, our finances, our desires and our dreams – we need to surrender them to God. We may need to make significant decisions and changes about our friendships, how we use our time, our resources and our lifestyle. 2. For us to become more like Jesus, we need to know Him - not just know about Him. We need to be faithful in our daily prayer and in Scripture meditation and study. To form our minds, we need to get immersed with God’s word and listen to good Christian teachings. We need to avoid media that sows negative values and thinking in us. 3. We also need to be in a place where we can see examples of other men and women who are also growing in the fruit of the Holy Spirit – and learn from them. It is hard to grow if we are in an environment of negative speech patterns, damaging relationships, and worldly ideals and values. In other words, we need Christian community! We need like-minded disciples of Jesus. 4. Facing a choice to respond with the fruit of the Holy Spirit or not – choose to do the right thing even if it is hard, difficult, or not pleasing to many. We need to choose to do the loving thing, choose to be patient, choose to be faithful, choose to be gentle, and choose to be self- controlled. We should not be ruled by our emotions – but let our emotions follow our decisions. 5. We need to be patient with ourselves – growing takes time. Sometimes failures and mistakes are necessary for us to experience in order for us to grow.

Our character makes us effective as Christians. Growing in the fruit of the Holy Spirit is an everyday task and a lifetime goal. We can never be holy enough not to grow. When we look at the mirror, do we [and others] see only ourselves, or do we [or others] see Jesus in us?

Other Scripture References 1. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. [Colossians 3:12-14] 2. Other references: Ephesians 4:1-3, 1 Timothy 6:11, 1 Peter 3:8, 2 Peter 1:5-7.

For Personal Reflection and Group Sharing: 1. Talk to your spouse or a good friend, or have a self-assessment – am I growing in character like Jesus? In what areas can I grow more? 2. Are my environment and my friends helpful to make me grow like Jesus? 8 KAIROS NEW ZEALAND YOUTH NEWS

PRAYERWATCH: SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISE Fight the good fight

Once again it is December and we are fast approaching the celebration of the birth of our Saviour and Redeemer. December can be a busy month as we prepare to celebrate and also prepare for the summer holidays so it is timely to reflect on how Satan will see this period as a time to attack us. January is a time when our young people gather in Christchurch for teaching, formation, worship and recreation. We need to pray that our young people will be blessed as they gather for Summer Oasis, the Leadership day and the Men’s Household. That all leaders and teachers will be well prepared and all serving in anyway will have an enjoyable and blessed time.

We get out of routine when we are on holiday or even if we stay at home, as we are visited by others or go visiting. The life of the “Lamb of God” slows down and we do not have our usual contact with our house groups and other meetings we are involved in. Our commitment to the Prayerwatch gets disrupted also by the above reasons and yet it is a time we need to be vigilant and continue to fight the good fight as our lives are more open to the attack of the evil one, we are away more from our homes and possessions, we travel on busier roads while the people around us are in a more relaxed mood.

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5: 8-9 12 It is important to keep our commitment to the Watch as we fight the battle Jesus is leading us in and to seek his protection. Our hour on the Watch may be interrupted by what is happening around us so I urge you to keep up the commitment at a more suitable time and use the Gap Dedication Prayer. Too many missed hours means there are holes in our spiritual wall surrounding the “Lamb of God”. If we are away from home we need to remember those either side of us on the Watch and keep them informed of whether we will be able to receive or pass the Watch. Texting is a part of our daily life now so it can be used to pass and receive the Watch during this holiday period. May this Christmas season and holiday time be a time of reflection and blessings.

Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armour on!

If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch then please send them to me or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me. God bless and watch over you all. Alan McKenzie. National Coordinator Prayerwatch
