The Riverside Elemen- tary School fourth graders had just com- pleted the school’s annual Mini Relay for Life, which this year moved to neighboring Shoal River Middle School’s track. Each year in advance of the American Cancer Society’s April Relay for Life, Rich- ards organizes an advance event at River- side in which students in all of the grades participate by running or walking — or a combination of both — around the track. Teachers, parents and grandparents join in as well. “Even after we got back into the class- room after being out there for an hour and a half, I wanted them to feel the tiredness in their bodies so they know what it’s like for someone who’s been going through treat- ments for cancer,” Richards said. “I want to impact them.” BRIAN HUGHES | News Bulletin Richards organized the event soon after Students in Jennifer Richards’ fourth cancer struck close to home. grade class give a thumbs-up as they complete another lap in the Riverside See RELAY A3 Elementary School Mini-Relay for Life.
