Bus Tours of the San Dieguito Lagoon Wetland Restoration Project July 14th (FULL), No Tour in August, September 15th, October 13th To celebrate the restoration efforts and the work in progress, the Friends of the San Dieguito River Valley are conducting free bus tours, viewing hundreds of acres of public lands owned by the . The bus makes six stops; some mobility is required although there is no hiking. The bus holds 12 passengers for each tour: 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Call (858) 674-2275 x14 to place your name on a waiting list. Directions will be given upon confirmation of tour date available to your party. This is located in Del Mar.

Archaeology and History of the San Pasqual Valley Second Saturday Visiting Scholar Series – Two Part Series July 14th, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. & October 13th, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The Archaeological Center is sponsoring these presentations and lectures. Located adjacent to the Wild Animal Park and Battlefield State Park, admission is free to the public but a suggested donation of $5 is asked. Contact (760) 291-0370 for information and reservations. The Center curates over 4,000 boxes of archaeological artifacts and associated documents from over 450 archaeological sites.

Explore Your Backyard Tuesday, September 25th 10:15 a.m. – noon The San Dieguito River Park is a beautiful and diverse open space park. The Coast to Crest Trail will eventually span 55 miles from the gateway at the San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar to the summit of Volcan Mountain in Julian. Almost forty miles of trails are already in place for hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians to enjoy! But the River Park offers much more – recreational and educational programs and events year-round!

Location: Oasis, 280 E. Via Rancho Parkway in the North County Fair Mall. Enter the old Robinson-May ladies store from the lower level entrance directly off the south parking lot. You cannot enter from within the mall or from the side doors. Follow the signs and take the elevator to second floor classrooms. Call Oasis at (760) 432-0635 for info.

Photography for the Unphotographer Saturday, September 29th Call for time and to RSVP People make photographs, not cameras. Do you want to take great pictures but can’t get past the technical terms? This is a simple course in point-and-shoot picture taking for all those who want to capture the moment without the manual! Explore the techniques of compositional elements while creating images that will last. Michael Novitz specializes in film photography and development.

“Stargazing in the San Pasqual Valley” an Astronomy Outreach Program Hosted by the State of Department of Parks With the Support and Sponsorship of the San Dieguito River Park

All Star Parties are held at the San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park 16666 San Pasqual Valley Rd., 1.5 miles east of the Wild Animal Park on Highway 78 (Preferred Parking at the San Diego Archaeological Center)

Presentations begin at 6:00 p.m. with telescope viewing until 11:00 p.m., weather permitting. Telescopes and equipment may be unloaded and set up on observing field (We also have a limited number of telescopes on site for viewing the skies, courtesy of OPT)

Wednesday, July 18th 8:00 a.m. River Park boating enthusiasts Laurilyn Burson and Richard Foster will be your guides on this kayaking adventure. Bring your kayak and safety vest; launching fee is $1! If you need a kayak and safety vest, we have a limited number to rent (deposit required). First Call/First Serve. You must reserve in advance and receive a confirmation to attend this activity. Contact Barbara at (858) 674-2275x14; reservations will not be taken in advance for September date. Location: Meet at the Concession Building at Lake Hodges – Exit I-15 at Via Rancho Parkway and go west (left). Turn left onto Lake Drive, just before Del Dios Highway. Follow for approximately one mile and turn left at gated lake entrance. Follow road to Lake Hodges boat launch area.

Sunday, July 29th 8:30 a.m. till you get tired! North Shore Trail Get out your bicycle and join River Park Rangers along the North Shore Lake Hodges Trail. We’ll ride under the Overpass and to Felicita Creek and beyond! This ride is for beginning and intermediate bicyclists and all ages are welcome! Location: North Shore Lake Hodges Trail – Exit I-15 at Via Rancho Parkway and go east (right) for a ¼ mile. Turn right (traffic light) onto Sunset Drive. Ample parking at end of street.

Sunday, August 26th 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Del Dios Gorge Take a Twilight Hike along the San Dieguito River Park’s newest trail segment with River Valley Guide Mike Thacker and Trail Patroller Chuck Anderson. This is a unique section of trail -- geologic formations, views of the historical Lake Hodges flume and our new bridge! Location: West of Lake Hodges, near the Crosby Estates – Look for the Lemon Twist Fruit Stand on Del Dios Highway! Turn in here and drive down the paved road to the staging area. Parking is for both the Santa Fe Valley Trail to the west and the Del Dios Gorge Trail to the east.

Saturday, September 29th 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. North Shore Trail Even your horse wants to cool down by the lake! Saddle up and join River Park Equestrians Barbara Kinder and Gary Hawes on a ride along this scenic route to Lake Hodges. Pack a lunch (and water) or hitch up at Hernandez Hideaway for a bite! (horses not provided) Location: North Shore Lake Hodges Trail (see July 29th above) – trailer staging is in large gravel lot on Sunset Drive.

We Need You! The restoration of our Park’s trail system and the creation of wildlife habitat are essential to providing a quality experience for all River Park visitors. Won’t you please help us? Weekend work projects are designed to get volunteers working hands-on in the field. We welcome individuals, families, and groups and we provide training, tools and water. This is an excellent way to earn hours, credits and badges! Reservations accepted no later than Wednesday prior to work project; leave your name and number of participants. Trail Maintenance 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Sunday, July 8th Location: Del Dios Park at Lake Hodges Exit I-15 at Via Rancho Parkway and go west (left); turn left onto Lake Drive just before Del Dios Highway. Follow Lake Drive to gated lake entrance on left side of road. Park in the lot just inside the gate. Sunday, August 12th Location: Highland Valley Staging Area Exit I-15 at West Bernardo Drive/Pomerado Road and go east (right); turn left (first traffic light) onto Highland Valley Road. Make immediate right into dirt parking lot/staging area. Sunday, September 9th Location: Highland Valley Staging Area See above directions

Trail work may consist of the following: trimming vegetation with loppers; using hand tools such as shovels, rakes; installing fence or sign posts; compacting and shaping soil.

Habitat Restoration 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 21st Location: Ysabel Creek Road at Bandy Canyon Road (San Pasqual Valley) From I-15, go east on Highway 78 past the Wild Animal Park. Cross bridge and turn right onto Bandy Canyon Road (marked) and travel about three miles to Ysabel Creek Road (marked); you will pass the Verger Dairy. Turn right onto Ysabel Creek Road followed by another right into the staging area. Saturday, August 18th Location: Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead Exit I-15 at Via Rancho Parkway and go east (right) for ¼ mile. Turn right (traffic light) onto Sunset Drive. Park at end of street. Look for the windmill! Follow Mule Hill Trail to house. (visible from street) Saturday, September 15th Location: Highland Valley Staging Area See August 12th above for directions

Habitat work may consist of the following: planting and harvesting native vegetation; spreading mulch and rock; collecting seeds; watering; weeding; removing non-native plants.
