We developed a list of pests associated with beans (in any country) that occur in Jordan on any host based on scientific literature, previous commodity risk assessments, records of intercepted pests at ports-of-entry, and information from experts on bean production. This is a qualitative risk assessment, as we express estimates of risk in descriptive terms (High, Medium, and Low) rather than numerically in probabilities or frequencies. We identified seven quarantine pests likely to follow the pathway of introduction. We estimated Consequences of Introduction by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate-host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact. We estimated Likelihood of Introduction values by considering both the quantity of the commodity imported annually and the potential for pest introduction and establishment. We summed the Consequences of Introduction and Likelihood of Introduction values to estimate overall Pest Risk Potentials, which describe risk in the absence of mitigation. -

TJie followint; apparently undescribcd species have mostly been received from Mr. Roberto Miiller, of Mexico City, for identification. I have been assisted in placing some of the species by Sir George F. Ilampson and Mr. William Schaus. Their assistance is specially acknowledged under each heading. All the species are from Mexico excei)t in one famil}', the Cochlidiidae, where species from Costa Rica and Brazil are described. Superfamily PAPILIONOIDEA. Family SATYRID^. Genus EUPTYCHIA Hubner. EUPTYCHIA PERTEPIDA, new species. Dark gray; a reddish shade over the middle of the fore wing, espe- cially marked along the median vein and the bases of veins 3 and 4; a diffused band of erect scales across the disk beyond the median vein, cut by the reddish veins. Hind ^ving with the diffused reddish shade outwardly; two elongated blackish spots on the margin between veins 3 to 5. Beneath the fore wings are reddish on the lower half; two brown lines cross the disk, and there is a row of submarginal lunate dusky spots. Ilind wing brown-gray, the two median lines wavy and irregular, with a faint similar subbasal line, the outermost line followed by a bright reddish shade. A submarginal row of silvery scaling in a waved and broken line, crossing two velvet}' black oval spots on the margin, on which the silver forms irregularl}' geminate spots. Expanse, 35 mm. Female similar, but the whole discal area of fore whig overspread willi bright brownish red, the Imes of the underside slightly indicated, the SOX mark absent. -

The Notes section provides the seminal citations, data and/or commentary to all changes since 1983 for easy and future reference. In addition, this list proposes seven new generic combinations, the transfer of a phycitine species, Salebria nigricans (Hulst), to Epipaschiinae and its syn. n. with Pococera fuscolotella (Ragonot), and three new records for the United States. Purposefully, no new taxa are described here, but we found a gradual increase of 10% in the number of species described since 1983. -

Key to Frequently Named Lepidopteran Larvae Intercepted, Or Potentially Encountered, at Us Ports
KEY TO FREQUENTLY NAMED LEPIDOPTERAN LARVAE INTERCEPTED, OR POTENTIALLY ENCOUNTERED, AT US PORTS S. C. Passoa, 2014 This key is designed to identify the most frequently named Lepidoptera at United States ports of entry as of 2013. Because many species cannot be named (early instars or poorly studied groups), it is not a given that this key has all the most frequently intercepted taxa. Some genera may regularly intercepted but unrecognized. The huge variety of early instar Noctuidae/Erebidae is a good example of this problem. There are many other taxa in this category. Trade patterns are constantly changing over time, users should expect a need to delete or add species to this key in the future. Good comprehensive larval keys exist (Carter and Kristensen 1998, Stehr 1987) but as a rule they are too long and complicated for the volume of material we get in APHIS. Also, they rarely go past family. This key is a compromise between the need to for precision and speed. Thus, a good collection and detailed understanding of larval morphology is assumed and required. All of the references cited in the LepIntercept fact sheets need to be part of any port library. This document serves as a blanket recommendation for their purchase or copying costs from the APHIS Lepidoptera specialist to any port needing a justification. This key assumes eventual full access to the appropriate literature. Getting this information needs to be a priority for ports frequently intercepting larval Lepidoptera. Many of the copyrighted books are never going to be "on-line" and go out of print relatively fast. -

Yaseen CAB International Institute of Biological Control Gordon St., Curepe Trinidad, In ABSTRACT The pigeon pea Cajanua e&jan is an important cultivated legume in the Caribbean. It is attacked by several insect pests. The pod borers ADcyloa to.ia stercorea. Fundella pellncens and Hellotbis virescens are major limit ing factors. A. stercorea ha s a rich complex of natural enemies in Trinidad and some of these may be given trials i.n territories where they do not occur. ~hilesome natural enemies of Y. pcllucclUI and H. virescens are known, these are inefficient. There is a need to introduce exotic natural enemies of these as well as related pod borers to improve natural control. The para sites usually build after severe initial borer damage has been inflicted. Possibilities of control by use of pheromones as well as by efficient use of chemical pesticides at early stage of damage by the borers need to be inves tigated. Two hitherto insignificant borers Pococera atrUle1ltella and Sphenarches caffer have in recent years been seen inflicting severe damage which calls for investigations of susceptibility of new varieties of pigeon peas. INTRODUCTION Pigeon pea, Csjsuus cajan, is cu I tivated throughou t most of the Common wealth Caribbean and forms an important source of protein. Traditionally, it has been a subsistence crop. Due to the drop in sugar prices on the world market, some sugar-producing countries have embarked on a programme of diversification, placing emphasis on ~ncreasedpigeon pea production both for domestic consumption and export markets. -

Pierre (9LrocLor; C.A.R.D.I.,7Uniersity -of the'W6stUndies, St. Augustine, Trinidad) Introduction Grain legumes, by virtue of their high protein content and relatively low cost, are potentially capable of alleviating protein malnutrition among millions of people particularly in developing countries. One or more grain legume finds ready acceptance among the inhabitants of practically every country. The storage, handling and transportation of these commodities present comparatively few problems owing to their low moisture content, thus facilitating distribution. The wide range of grain legume types makes them adaptable to various systems of cultivation ranging from backyard and small farm production to highly mechanised production systems. Because of their symbiotic relationship with root-nodule bacteria (Rhizobium sp.) they can be grown on many soils without supplemental nitrogen - a feature which cannot be over-emphasized owing to the ever increasing cost of fertilizers. In spite of these major attributes, certain constraints so far have restricted the capability of grain legumes to provide the deficient protein. These include their overall lcw level of yield, unfavourable systems of cultivation, extreme susceptibility to various pests and diseases (see Table 1) restrictions in utilization owing to consumer preferences and certain undesirable features, e.g., flatu- lence factors, antimetabolites (trypsin inhibitors, hemaglutinins and , associated toxic factors, cyanogenic glycosides, goiterogenic factors), poor digestibility and peculiar flavours. Fortunately, most of the antimetabolites are heat labile so that with proper cooking or heat processing the dangers associated with high levels of consumption can be almost totally eliminated. -
