This represents a traditional culture strongly rooted in religion. The other is India, the creation of a modern set of circumstances. It has to do with British rule and the modernities set in motion by that phenomenon. India as a nation is very much a creation of the encounter between an ancient people and a western discourse. The British unified the geographical space we call India in a manner never done before. Only Asoka the Great and Akbar the Great had brought large parts of the Indian sub- continent under their control, but their empires were not as potent or as organized as the British Empire. The British gave India communications, railways, the telegraph and telephones; they organized their knowledge of India systematically by surveying the landscape, categorizing the flora and fauna and by dividing the population into castes and religious groupings. Edward Said has shown in his well- known general studies of the colonial enterprise how this accumulation of knowledge is a way of establishing power. In India the British engaged themselves in this knowledge accumulation to give themselves an Empire and a free market and a site to work their experiments in social engineering. Received: 10 April 2017; Accepted: 16 May 2017; Published: 24 May 2017 Abstract: This paper problematizes the prevalent model of studying the “Neo-Vedanta”¯ of Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) principally in terms of an influx of Western ideas and nationalism. In particular, I demonstrate how scholarly constructions of “Neo-Vedanta”¯ consistently appeal to a high culture, staticized understanding of “traditional” Advaita Vedanta¯ as the alterity for locating Vivekananda’s “neo” or new teachings. In doing so, such studies ignore the diverse medieval and early modern developments in advaitic and Advaita Vedantic¯ traditions which were well-known to Vivekananda and other “Neo-Vedantins”.¯ Redressing this discursive imbalance, I propose that close attention to the way in which Swami Vivekananda drew from Indic texts opens up a wider frame for understanding the swami and the genealogy of his cosmopolitan theology. It has been the guardian of tradition, the preserver of the moral law, the educator and the teacher of wisdom. In all ages, the first creative works of a culture are due to a religious inspiration and dedicated to a religious end. The spiritual and ethical culture of any race preserves its noble characteristics. Swamiji says, “It is a change of the soul itself for the better that alone will cure the evils of life.” In his lecture, “The Future of India, Swamiji highlights the true role of culture: It is culture that withstands shocks, not a simple mass of knowledge. You can put a mass of knowledge into the world, but that will not do it much good. There must come culture into the blood. We all know in modern times of nations which have masses of knowledge, but what of them? They are like tigers, they are like savages, because culture is not there. Swami Vivekananda, on the other hand, despite an equally fervent desire to reform Hindu society and protect it from 'evil materialistic' influences of the west, drew his inspiration mainly from Vedantic philosophy.

    Literature Review:- The previous researches carried out on the educational thoughts of various philosophers and its relevance on the modern society, the researches done earlier show that still so many other aspects of educational thoughts of these thinkers have not been picked up and explored. Although there are some researches which are quite significant as they extend their horizon and take initiative to include multifarious themes of education yet the number of such is quite less. Hence there is still a gap in the previous research done which can be noticed with the review of these following papers: Sharma (2012): studied the educational ideas of Swami Vivekananda. The aim of education is not to acquire degrees but to get to know about the country and its people hence to serve them. He believed that the aim of education was to awake man from ignorance and to guide him to knowledge. Love, peace, co-operation, equality, mutual understanding were some of the saint’s ideals on the basis of which he propounded his theory of education. He emphasised on the role of concentration in education. The mentor is very significant in Vivekananda’s philosophy of education. Sengupta (2014): studied the contribution made by Rabindranath Tagore, Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo in the field of education. He brought out the influence of Upanishadic thoughts on the three mentioned educators. At the time of setting up Ashram Vidyalaya at Shantiniketan, Rabindranath was influenced by the ideals of Upanishads. He laid emphasis on real pursuit of knowledge which has been expressed in Svetasvata Upanishad. Vivekananda, influenced by Upanishadic thoughts, is of the opinion that concentration is very important for self-exploration.
