  • The Millennial Position of Spurgeon
TMSJ 7/2 (Fall 1996) 183-212 THE MILLENNIAL POSITION OF SPURGEON Dennis M. Swanson Seminary Librarian The notoriety of Charles Haddon Spurgeon has caused many since his time to claim him as a supporter of their individual views regarding the millennium. Spurgeon and his contemporaries were familiar with the four current millennial views—amillennialism, postmillennialism, historic premillennialism, and dispensational premillennialism—though the earlier nomenclature may have differed. Spurgeon did not preach or write extensively on prophetic themes, but in his sermons and writings he did say enough to produce a clear picture of his position. Despite claims to the contrary, his position was most closely identifiable with that of historic premillennialism in teaching the church would experience the tribulation, the millennial kingdom would be the culmination of God's program for the church, a thousand years would separate the resurrection of the just from that of the unjust, and the Jews in the kingdom would be part of the one people of God with the church. * * * * * In the last hundred years eschatology has probably been the subject of more writings than any other aspect of systematic theology. Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) did not specialize in eschatology, but supporters of almost every eschatological position have appealed to him as an authority to support their views. Given Spurgeon's notoriety, the volume of his writings, and his theological acumen, those appeals are not surprising. A sampling of conclusions will illustrate this point. Lewis A. Drummond states, "Spurgeon confessed to be a pre-millennialist."1 Peter Masters, current 1Lewis A. Drummond, Spurgeon: Prince of Preachers (Grand Rapids: Kregel, 1993) 650.

  • Discussion Questions for Small-Group Consideration Or Personal Reflection
Study Guide Discussion Questions for Small-Group Consideration or Personal Reflection Chapter 1 How Popular Are the Left Behind Books … and Why? (Forbes) 1. Does some knowledge about the backgrounds of authors Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins influence the way you read the novels? Why or why not? If it does influence you, in what way? 2. Why do you think the Left Behind novels have been so popular? 3. On the basis of your acquaintance with people who have read the Left Behind series, do you think they read the books simply as entertainment? Are they attracted to the religious beliefs in the books? Does reading the books influence the viewpoints and the lives of readers? If so, in what ways? If not, why not? 4. One criticism of the Left Behind books, and of the belief system on which they are based, is that it creates an “us-versus-them” mental- ity. The complaint is that it divides the world too easily into good and bad, black and white, with no shades of gray. Do you think this is true? If so, is it a helpful way to look at the world or not? Chapter 2 How Did Left Behind’s Particular Vision of the End Times Develop? (Kilde) 1. Kilde observes that, throughout history, times of strife have prompted Christians to focus on ideas of the end times, while atten- tion to the end times has been less popular when things are going well for Christians. Why would this be the case? Is it true now? 198 Discussion Questions 2.

A Study Of Premillennialism By A Comparison With The Bible DISPENSATIONAL TIMELINE 1948 AD WHAT PREMILLENNIAL TEACHERS SAY “In short, the ‘last days’ or the ‘latter days’ usually refer to any point from just prior to the Rapture to the Glorious Appearing itself. While some references may refer to trends during the church age, most of them point to the seven to ten or more years, a period that pinpoints the end of ‘the times of the Gentiles’ to the end of the ‘Great Tribulation’ … ‘The last days,’ ‘the time of the end,’ and ‘the end of the age’ are terms leading up to the 7 year tribulation when this age as we know it comes to an end. It is preceded by the Rapture and followed by the Glorious Appearing” (Tim LaHaye, Are We Living In The End Times, pg. 18-19) ‘LEFT BEHIND’ AUTHOR • “No one knows for certain when Christ will return or whether we are really living in the end times. We believe however that Christians living today have more reason than those of any generation before us to believe that Christ could come in our lifetime. For example, all prophecy scholars agree that the generation that saw Israel restored to her land in 1948 could well be the ‘generation that will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.”’ • Tim LaHaye (Are We Living In The End Times?) ‘LEFT BEHIND’ AUTHOR • “When you examine all the ‘signs of the times’ that have been fulfilled in our lifetime, you have to believe the coming of Christ is very near.

  • The Rapture and Glorious Appearing of Jesus Christ
THE RAPTURE AND GLORIOUS APPEARING OF JESUS CIIRIST by Edward E. Hindson Th. D., D. Phil. Vice President There's Hope! Atlanta, Georgia Distinguished Visiting Professor Missouri Baptist College St. Louis, Missouri THE RAPTURE AND GLORIOUS APPEARING OF JESUS CHRIST The New Testament clearly teaches that Jesus Christ will "come again" (John 14:3) and "appear the second time" (Hebrews 9:38). At least nine biblical terms are used in the New Testament to describe the return of Christ.1 1. Ho erchomenos. "The coming one," as in Hebrews 10:37, "For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come." 2. Erchomai. The act of coming. Used often of Christ's return. Cf. Matthew 24:30; John 14:3; 2 Thessalonians 1:10; Jude 14; Revelation 1:7; 22:20. 3. Katabaino. To "come down" or descend, as in 1 Thessalonians 4:16, "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout." 4. Heko. Result of one's coming, to have "arrived," as in Revelation 3:3, "I will come as a thief." 5. Parousia. Denotes arrival and presence (of a ruler), as in 1 Thessalonians 2:19, "For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?" 6. Apokalupsis. Meaning to "unveil" or "uncover." Rendered "appearing" (1 Peter 1:7) or "coming" (1 Corinthians 1:7) or "revelation" (Revelation 1:1). Involves the unveiling of His divine glory. 7. Phaneroo. To "appear" (John 21:1) or be "manifest" (1 John 3:5).
