By centering the concept of utopianism, understood broadly as “social dreaming,” this project departs from idealized or mythologized representations of Brazil and focuses instead on hopeful imagination. Though national cultural production long reflected optimistic myths about Brazil and its territory, the military dictatorship of 1964-1985 heralded a turn towards pessimism and dystopian aesthetics. Brazilian artists of the current, democratic period negotiate these dual legacies in a predominantly urban society during an era of global ii skepticism about utopia. While references to Brazil and its cities as utopian or dystopian abound in recent criticism, this dissertation is among the first projects to analyze contemporary cultural production through the lens of utopian studies. Consequently, the primary objectives of this study include surveying the role of utopianism and correlated concepts in recent film and literature, identifying trends among the included works, and considering techniques used to evoke these concepts. My choice of focal cities facilitates comparative analysis of the influence of local history, culture, geography, and urbanism on utopian thought. Whereas Brasília remains closely tied to both utopian yearning and dystopia, critics rarely associate São Paulo explicitly with either concept despite the megacity’s simultaneous embodiment of wealth, dynamism, chaos, and division. The selected texts representing both cities most often respond to a shared baseline of disillusionment with cautious hopefulness. Allegorical and realist dystopian aesthetics remain influential, as does the limited, critical desire outlined in Haroldo de Campos’s theory of post- utopian poetry. Few texts embrace a fatalistic, anti-utopian outlook, while hopeful perspectives breaking meaningfully with the status quo are likewise uncommon. The Federal District is a more frequent site of radical utopianism as authors and filmmakers draw from Brasília’s history of revolutionary aspiration, whereas such ambition is almost entirely absent from the included works centered on São Paulo. Despite this divergence, however, texts using dystopia or post- utopia to critique specific social or ideological phenomena predominate among the included representations of both cities. iii The dissertation of Benjamin David Burt is approved. Questões como a culpa de classe, o papel do intelectual/artista numa sociedade injusta, o desejo de solidariedade para com os mais humildes, a reflexão sobre os dilemas históricos, em especial as catástrofes ligadas à se- gunda guerra mundial, são fundamentais para a compreensão de sua trajetória artística e intelectual e, muitas vezes, parecem eclipsados pela célebre imagem do escritor boê- mio, descompromissado. Para empreender este estudo, desenvolvemos uma leitura de dois poemas do autor em que a matéria social comparece de formas bastante distintas e reveladoras: “Mensagem a Rubem Braga” e “O operário em construção”.     CARTA ABERTA AOS MINISTROS DO SUPREMO TRIBUNAL FEDERAL - STF Assunto: Recurso Extraordinário (RE) nº. 1.017.365 Excelentíssimos Ministros do Supremo Tribunal Federal Dirigimo-nos respeitosamente a Vossas Excelências na condição de cidadãs e cidadãos não-indígenas deste território em que se constituiu o Estado Brasileiro e envergonhados com a forma com que, há séculos, tratamos os povos originários e os assuntos que são de seu interesse e direito. Os indígenas foram tratados pela lei brasileira como indivíduos relativamente incapazes até a Constituição de 1988. É verdade que esse tratamento poderia se justificar como uma proteção do Estado-guardião contra práticas enganosas e fraudulentas a sujeitos sem a plena compreensão dos parâmetros sociais da sociedade dominante. Entretanto, a história de expulsão, transferência forçada e tomada de suas terras pelo Estado ou por particulares sob aquiescência ou conivência do Estado evidenciam os efeitos deletérios de uma tutela estatal desviada de sua finalidade protetiva. Segundo o último Censo do IBGE (2010), 42,3% dos indígenas brasileiros vivem fora de terras indígenas e quase metade deles vive nas regiões Sul, Sudeste e Nordeste do país. Essas regiões foram as primeiras e as mais afetadas pelas práticas de expulsão e ocupação não-indígena das terras dos povos originários. Embora boa parte da sociedade brasileira, por simples desinformação, pense que a tomada e a ocupação das terras dos indígenas tenham ocorrido nos primeiros anos da chegada dos europeus a este território, isso não é verdade. Foi sobretudo com as políticas de expansão para o Oeste iniciadas sob Getúlio Vargas e aprofundadas na Ditadura Militar, com grandes obras de infraestrutura e abertura de frentes agropecuárias, que os indígenas sentiram com mais vigor e violência o significado do avanço da “civilização” sobre suas terras e seus recursos.

Na década de 90, Duda foi uma das primeiras brasileiras a atuar no futebol internacional. Com a camisa do Milan e do Verona, da Itália, a meia brilhou no campeonato italiano por duas temporadas. Ao retornar ao Brasil, voltou a vestir a camisa 10 do Internacional, e foi com o time colorado que encerrou a carreira aos 30 anos, somando conquistas importantes, como o pentacampeonato do Campeonato Gaúcho, o tricampeonato da Copa Sul e o Torneio de CIVATE (Itália).

The focus are the connections between childhood memories and adult personality, regarding the character Virgínia in the novel The chandelier (O lustre), by Clarice Lispector, in order to exemplify the function of affective memory and the universal right to a dignified childhood. The function of affective memories is an important trace in the process of identity formation, which contributes to the development of a legal theory regarding children’s rights. Affection is considered a foundation for dignified life, and literary legal reflections contribute to the rethinking of childhood, in the eyes of Law and social studies. INITIAL THOUGHTS Benedito Nunes (1989, p. 105), as an exponent in analyzing the production by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, indicates the reflexive, uncanny features of the fictional characters created by her, and emphasizes the density of her narrative regarding consciousness. Hegemonic Masculinity, Women and Football in Brazil and Argentina DAVID WOOD University of Sheffield, UK The practice of football by women in Latin America is an integral part of historical patterns around the performance of gender roles and offers insights into how power, both symbolic and political, is subject to ongoing processes of negotiation. A study of women’s involvement as spectators and players in Brazil and Argentina since the early twentieth century sees football emerge as a field in which the construction of gender identities, both personal and national, may be contested. More recently, a growing presence of female players, writers and academics suggests that female agency through football in Latin America is an increasingly realistic goal. Taking the Field Football in Latin America has become firmly established as a subject of study for historians, sociologists, anthropologists and literary scholars, especially in relation to Argentina and Brazil, but the great majority of publications arising from such work focus entirely on the game as played by men. Indeed, some influential authors have depicted football in the region as an entirely male affair: Argentinian anthropologist Eduardo Archetti, for example, wrote in 1994 that football was and still is a typical and exclusively masculine sport in Argentina (Archetti, 1994: 226), reiterating almost a decade later that the world of football is exclusively male, an encounter in the stadium [ … ] between competing groups of male players and supporters (Archetti, 2003: 220).
