Keeping Kosher by Froma Fallik Subject area: Jewish Identity Single lesson plan Target group: 5th grade through High School Objective: Students will understand the Torah commandments relating to kashrut as well as the development of kashrut over time, up to the present day, including eco- kashrut. Students will be able to determine if an animal is kosher. Description: Students discuss Torah and Rabbinic law. What is halakhah? • Jewish law • Rules and practices • The path one walks (root: hey lamed kaf = walk, go, or travel) What do we call these laws? • Mitzvoth (commandments) How many are there? • 613 (the numeric value of the word Torah, Tav =400, Vav = 6, Resh =200, Hei = 5, plus 2 for the two mitzvot whose existence precedes the Torah: “I am the Lord, your God” and “You shall have no other gods before Me” • Many can only be performed in the land of Israel (ex Shmetah = Sabbatical year) • Many cannot be performed today (Temple sacrifices) • Some are for specific groups of people (Kohanim and Levi’im) How do we divide these laws? • 248 positive and 365 negative • Between man and man. Between God and man. • chukim (laws that do not seem to have a rational basis- singular chok) and mishpatim (laws that make sense intuitively- singular mishpat). • Mitvot D’Oraita (laws found in the Torah) and Mitzvot De Rabbanan (laws instituted by the Rabbis) 1 Keeping Kosher by Froma Fallik Students discuss what kashrut is and is not, including issues of health, identity, self- control, and holiness. What is kashrut? • Jewish law dealing with food • What we are and are not permitted to eat • How to prepare and eat food • Kosher means fit, proper, correct • Can be used to describe objects (ex, a 10 branch menorah is not kosher) • Does NOT mean blessed by a rabbi Is “kosher style” food kosher? • Kosher style means foods we associate with Jewish cooking, not food that is halakhically kosher Why keep kosher? • Because the Torah says so (chok, not mishpat) • Do we keep kosher to eat in a healthy way? • These are old laws- don’t think of modern hygiene. -

Cutting through the Confusion about Shechita by: Rabbi Jeremy Rosen Although it has been several weeks since the gruesome videos taken inside the AgriProcessors abattoir were released, the controversy continues. The videos were taken surreptitiously by a PETA volunteer employed at the plant, and can be viewed at PETA’s website. While PETA clearly has it’s own agenda, no one has denied that the scenes on the videos are real. They show animals, after shechita has taken place, having their trachea and esophagus pulled out of the neck, being ejected from the holding pens while still conscious, and, in at least one case, actually getting up and wandering around. Although these scenes are sickening, I have to say that no way of killing animals is pleasant. Nowadays we like to sanitize the process and put the reality out of our minds. But I grew up in the English countryside and often saw the way animals were barbarically butchered out in the paddock, behind the barn, or in the butcher’s yard. The butcher would simply stick a knife in and wrench, or take a hatchet and hack away to a blood-curdling cacophony of squeals and protests. In contrast, shechita, the halachic method of putting an animal to death for food, is designed to be as painless as possible. The knife used to sever the main arteries in the neck is kept razor-sharp, and the slightest imperfection makes it forbidden to use. We know that a cut to our own flesh from such a sharp blade cannot be felt initially. -

(Divrei Chayim-Yoreh Deah) THE PROBLEMS IN THE FIELD OF NIKKUR (PURGING ANIMAL MEAT FROM FORBIDDEN FATS) AN EXPLANATION ON THE ISSUR [PROHIBITION] OF EATING CHELEV [FORBIDDEN FATS] by the Chofetz Chaim, z.t.l. It is written in the Torah: Any fat of an ox, a sheep, or a goat you shall not eat. All species of kosher animals are included in these three general species, and whoever eats fat of an animal that died by itself or became taref, i.e., suffered a wound or an ailment from which it would die within twelve months, is liable for stripes both for eating fat and for eating neveilah or taref. Although the rule is that one prohibition does not fall upon another, this case is an exception, since the prohibition of neveilah or taref includes both the fat and the rest of the flesh of the animal. This is known as issur kolel, an all-inclusive prohibition. Since it falls upon the rest of the animal, it also falls upon the fat previously prohibited. The prohibition of chelev, the fat for which one is liable to Kares (excision) (termination of life): Heaven help us ... This refers to: • Fat on the innards. • Fat on the flanks • Fat on the kidneys. • Fat on 2nd or 3rd stomach (of t ' he ruminant, which is part of the "fat that is on the innards,") Fat on the membrane (located on the thick part of the spleen) 1 BSD In addition there are many other varieties of fat prohibited by the Torah. -

Holdier In The Question of the Animal and Religion: Theoretical Stakes, Practical Implications, Aaron S. Gross breaks new ground in contemporary animal studies by tracing the recent history of critical religious approaches to animals before fram- ing several new horizons for further study in an interdisciplin- ary field ripe for exploration. The book aims to broadly “expose the absent presence of animals in the history of the study of religion and clear a space for their future” (7), a task Gross sets to by tracing the lineage of Western animal studies through the work of Émile Dur- kheim, Ernst Cassirer, Mircea Eliade, and Jonathan Z. Smith to reveal Western culture’s tendency to replace animal concerns with human ones, even when animals are the supposed focus of one’s analysis. In each case, Gross points out how the theo- rists purport to elevate animals as examples in their various frameworks, only to mutate them into totemic representations of ultimately human concern, thereby evacuating the “animal- ity” of animals and replacing it with purely anthropocentric values. As the Durkheimian sacred/profane binary has been maintained in the development of critical studies, animals have been discussed philosophically, but primarily as foils for hu- man religious practices and never on their own terms. -

More specifically, I am interested in how sharia as a divine, non- contingent moral and legal code is understood and analyzed in various contingent situations and everyday settings such as producing, distributing, marketing and consuming halal food products. Drawing on conversations with residents, employees, and customers who visit stores in Devon Avenue, as well as archival research, my aim is to demonstrate the various multifaceted understandings and implications of sharia for Muslims in the United States. I argue that the multifaceted interpretations and practices of sharia in the United States are connected with the rhythms and everyday practices of Chicago and beyond. These connections, rhythms, and practices are reflected and interpreted in the actions and comments of Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The goal here is not just to show that the religious (for instance, sharia) and the non- religious/secular (grocery stores, restaurants, farms) are intertwined but to what extent these seemingly separate and disparate domains and spaces may be concurrently called upon within the framework of Islam, sharia, and halal food. -

Short Communications Caring for Muslim Patients - Some Religious Issues Iftikhar AKa and Parvez IPa aDepartment of Human Nutrition, NWFP Agriculture University Peshawar, Pakistan ABSTRACT Islam is a universal religion and a comprehensive way of life that cannot be separated from patients. Muslim patients are not just passive recipients of medical decisions, but have their own religious views and beliefs about how they would like to be cared for by the medical profession. With the increasing Muslim population in the west, problems arise when a Muslim patient is admitted to a hospital with non-Muslim health care- giver, particularly related to dietary and nutritional issues. The health team should be aware of the religious prohibitions in Islam such as wine or alcohol, flesh of swine, reptiles, birds with talons, canine animals or scavenging creatures, intoxicants etc. The guidelines presented in this paper would enable the health provider to serve their Muslim patients in the most appropriate manner. KEYWORDS: Muslim patients, Hospital diet, Forbidden foods INTRODUCTION Eating, like any other act of the Muslims, is a matter of water should be made available to them whenever of worship if done Islamically. Muslims begin and end they use a bed pan and at meal times. It is preferable eating with the name of Allah. Islam reminds Muslims that female patients are cared for by females and male of foods and drinks as a provision of Allah provided patients by males, particularly during confinement. to them for survival and for maintaining good health.
