Tucker, Stevenson, Weiss, and Life: Renditions of the Transcendent View From Past- Life Memories John C. Gibbs, PhD The Ohio State University ABSTRACT: The work of researcher Jim Tucker and regression therapist Brian Weiss on past-life memories suggests a transcendent or non- reductionist view of human life. In this view, mental life or consciousness does not entirely re- duce to the neural activity of the brain, and bodily death involves a return to a nonphysical realm. This view is also suggested from other phenomena such as near- death experiences. The transcendent view from past- life memories entails two renditions. One rendition derives from Tucker’s—and late senior colleague Ian Stevenson’s—empirical verifications of children’s past- life claims. Weiss’s psychotherapy- based rendition is more impressionistic and subject to the vul- nerabilities of the hypnotic method—as noted by both Tucker and Stevenson. Both renditions must contend with the theodicic problem (intensely rendered by Harold Kushner). Many questions remain. Nonetheless, Tucker’s, Stevenson’s, Weiss’s, and other authors’ related work may suffice to support a transcendent understanding of human life. KEY WORDS: past- life memories; Jim Tucker; Ian Stevenson; Brian Weiss; regression therapy; near-death experiences What happens when a person dies? Physiologically, one’s heart stops beating, one stops breathing, and one’s eyes dilate and fix as brain function is lost (Parnia, 2006). Poetically, one’s breath becomes air (Kalanithi, 2016). “The living gaze—even if the person in question was very old and that gaze was vague and flickering—goes flat” (Alex- ander, 2014, p.

  • Ciência E a Teoria Da «Vida Após a Morte»: Algumas Considerações Sobre a Filosofia Da Ética
INTRODUÇÃO A morte é algo inerente à vida.

However, just because a book could have an earth-shattering impact does not necessarily mean book publishers will be interested in taking a chance on an unknown author. So after much soul searching, I decided to embark on an uphill battle to self-publish in order to get the findings in this book into the hands of society.

If I were asked under what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered on greatest problems of life, and has found solutions of some of them which well deserve the attention of those who have studied Plato and Kant, -I should point to India. And if I were to ask myself from what literature we, here in Europe, who have been nurtured almost exclusively on the thoughts of Greeks and Romans, and of one semitic race, may draw that corrective which is most wanted in order to make our inner life more perfect, more comprehensive, more universal, in fact more truly human, a life, not for this life only, but a transfigured and eternal life, again - I should point to India. Published in Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, Volume69.2, Number 879, pp. 49-77, April 2005 THE CASE OF IRIS FARCZADY - A STOLEN LIFE by Mary Rose Barrington, Peter Mulacz and Titus Rivas ABSTRACT In 1933 a 15 [online correction of: 16]-year-old well-educated Hungarian girl, Iris Farczády, who had dabbled extensively in mediumship, suddenly underwent a drastic personality change, claiming to be reborn Lucía, a 41-year-old Spanish working woman said by her to have died earlier that year. Transformed into 'Lucía', Iris spoke thereafter in fluent Spanish, a language she had apparently never learnt or had the opportunity to acquire, and could not understand any other language. Lucía has remained in control ever since and, now aged 86, she still considers Iris to have been a different person, who ceased to exist in 1933. The three authors of this paper met Lucía in 1998, and a camcorder cassette of interviews with her are lodged with the SPR. Attempts have been made to locate Lucía's claimed Spanish family, but these have not been successful. While the reincarnation aspect of the case has not been supported, there remains the puzzle of how Iris acquired her knowledge of the Spanish language, customs and popular culture, and why Iris should have willed or submitted to her 'replacement' by Lucía. INTRODUCTION In a paper dating from 1989, Dr Hubert Larcher, former Director of the Institut Métapsychique International (IMI) in Paris, mentioned a long-forgotten case of apparent possession involving Iris Farczády, a Hungarian girl who, in August 1933, at the age of 15 [correction of: 16], underwent a dramatic change of personality (Larcher, 1989).
