Other music fans likely know him as the guitarist, vocalist, frontman, and songwriter of the arena- filling band, Foo Fighters. Still others that have seen Grohl on the HBO series Sonic Highways or the documentary Sound City may recognize him as a music historian and film director. The truth is that Dave Grohl is all of the above. Thinking back to his childhood during an episode of the Sonic Highways series, Grohl remembers his artistic “light bulb” turning on during a family vacation to Chicago. Grohl, only twelve at the time, accompanied a cousin to a local Punk concert. It was awesome. He left the show inspired, asking himself, “why can’t I do this?” Then, he realized he could. Once home in Springfield, VA, a Beltway suburb about thirteen miles from the White House, the young Grohl tapped into D.C.’s thriving Punk scene. He befriended members of the local music community such as Ian MacKaye, a go-getter who played bass in Teen Idles, sang in Minor Threat, and later handled guitar and vocals in Fugazi, all while co-founding the Dischord Records label. In the mid and late 1980s, the major record labels, radio, and MTV--basically all the national tastemakers--were mostly focused on Glam Rock, Synth Pop, and Michael Jackson. D.C. Punk wasn’t even on their radar. But, rather than get discouraged or bitter about the lack of outside investment, many in the D.C.

    PHYSICAL REVIEW RESEARCH 2, 013372 (2020) Dynamics of bacterial populations under the feast-famine cycles Yusuke Himeoka * and Namiko Mitarai † The Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Blegdamsvej 17, Copenhagen, 2100-DK, Denmark (Received 15 October 2019; accepted 3 March 2020; published 27 March 2020) Bacterial populations in natural conditions are expected to experience stochastic environmental fluctuations, and in addition, environments are affected by bacterial activities since they consume substrates and excrete various chemicals. We here study possible outcomes of population dynamics and evolution under the repeated cycle of substrate-rich conditions and starvation, called the “feast-famine cycle,” by a simple stochastic model with the trade-off relationship between the growth rate and the growth yield or the death rate. In the model, the feast (substrate-rich) period is led by a stochastic substrate addition event, while the famine (starvation) period is evoked because bacteria use the supplied substrate. Under the repeated feast-famine cycle, the bacterial population tends to increase the growth rate, even though that tends to decrease the total population size due to the trade-off. Analysis of the model shows that the ratio between the growth rate and the death rate becomes the effective fitness of the population. Hence, the functional form of the trade-off between the growth and death rate determines if the bacterial population eventually goes extinct as an evolutionary consequence. We then show that the increase of the added substrate in the feast period can drive the extinction faster. Overall, the model sheds light on nontrivial possible outcomes under repeated feast-famine cycles.

    Foo Fighters to Rock the House at BlizzCon® 2011 The white limo stops here -- multi-platinum rockers to melt faces of sold-out crowd during closing ceremony of Blizzard Entertainment's epic gaming festival BlizzCon Virtual Ticket will feature live coverage of event, including Foo Fighters performance, via Internet worldwide and DIRECTV® in the US IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that Foo Fighters will headline the closing concert of this year's sold-out BlizzCon®, taking place October 21-22 at the Anaheim Convention Center. While tickets to the convention are currently sold out, viewers can watch at home by ordering a BlizzCon Virtual Ticket, offering comprehensive live coverage of the event (including Foo Fighters' performance) globally over the Internet and also on DIRECTV® in the United States. Over the course of their 16-year career, the Foo Fighters have sold tens of millions of records, won half a dozen Grammy awards, and raised countless voices in singalongs of iconic anthems like "Everlong," "My Hero," "Learn to Fly", "All My Life," "Best of You," and "The Pretender." Foo Fighters' BlizzCon debut marks founder Dave Grohl's triumphant return to the convention after playing drums for Tenacious D in last year's show, and comes during an international arena, stadium, and festival tour promoting their seventh album, the international #1 record Wasting Light.
