What is she? What does she believe in and how do we come face to face with her? And what is the role of university museums in producing and passing on her knowledge, ideas and values? As you know, we are in one of the oldest university buildings of Uppsala. I suppose that you have already heard that it was the remarkable professor Olaus Rudbeck who redesigned this house in the seventeenth century. When Rudbeck built the Anatomical Theatre (II. 1), he wanted to create facilities for teaching and research, but I am quite convinced that his main aim was to create an impressive house, conveying authority and communicating values. Rudbeck himself wrote that he wanted the building to im­ press foreigners. The university should stand out in all its splendour, and thus make a statement about the importance of learning and science in a northerly but powerful European state. Buildings, collections, and the people of the university play symbolic roles in the drama of contemporary society - this was true in the seventeenth century and is true today. Alma mater is not a secluded monastery any longer. The universities are big; they are in continuous contact with society at large, constantly negotiating between the eso­ teric and the exoteric - between complicated theories of modern science and the open­ ness of a diversified and democratic educational system.

As you know we are standing in one of the oldest university buildings of Uppsala. I guess that you already have heard that it was the remarkable professor Olaus Rudbeck who redesigned this house in the 17th century.     ISSN 1653-2244 INSTITUTIONEN FÖR KULTURANTROPOLOGI OCH ETNOLOGI DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY Between Dark Days and Light Nights: International PhD Students’ Experiences in Uppsala By Stefanie Mallow 2017 MASTERUPPSATSER I KULTURANTROPOLOGI Nr 69 Abstract Analysing what it means being neither immigrant nor tourist in a foreign country, this thesis looks at the experiences of international PhD students and their supervisors in the Swedish university town Uppsala. The Faculty of Science and Technology of Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) are the universities studied. Based on anthropological methods, this thesis focuses on the individual actors as they attempt to match the objective of doing a PhD while at the same time being in a different country. Using practice theory, the study highlights that the experiences of international PhD students and the people working with them vary greatly from PhD student to PhD student. Yet, almost all undergo a certain form of self-formation and adjustment process to match the requirements of not only their host country, but also the international field of science they attempt to enter. Being connected to other people in similar situations can help them adapt to this new environment, and many international PhD students join communities of practice. I argue that most develop an internationally recognised habitus, which helps them being recognised by the international community. The habitus can further, under certain circumstances, become partially conscious.     Acquisitions policy for the art collections of Uppsala University / Museum Gustavianum The art collections of Uppsala University are a part of Museum Gustavianum, and within the University this institution has responsibility for the acquisition, documentation and care of works of art. The art collections of Uppsala University contain the second largest collection of art from the early modern period in Sweden, as well as an important collection of modern art. The largest and most important categories of artworks are: — European and Swedish paintings of the early modern period (religious paintings, genre paintings, still lives and landscapes); — Swedish portraiture from the 16th century and later, with historical significance, or with specific importance for University history or the history of science; — Swedish 20th century painting, all genres. Especially important individual artworks or smaller collections in the possession of the University include: medieval artworks in a range of techniques; the Augsburg Art Cabinet with its contents; plaster casts of antique sculptures; and larger collections of individual artists such as Bruno Liljefors, etc. Acquisitions policy The criteria listed below apply to both acquisition by purchase and to gifts and donations.     Tom Slevin Mind-Body-Technology: ‘Nosce te Ipsum’ and a Theory of Prosthetic ‘Trialism’ Book Chapter from Anthology – Anatomical Theatre, edited Petrine Vinje Oslo: Utten Tittel November 2018 ISBN 978-82-93502-20-3 Page 27 This chapter will discuss a profound and fundamental interrelationship between mind, body and technology in terms of what it means to be ‘human’, or, what ‘being’ human might mean. One historical, yet enduring, theory of the human subject is René Descartes’s philosophy of the mind distinct from the body – this is termed ‘Cartesian dualism’. Whilst this is a classical, if outmoded, model of conceiving of a philosophy of the subject, it also provides a useful conceptual framework through which to critique, and arrive at, a different concept of how the terms ‘mind’ and ‘body’ might operate. For example, the mind/body binary distinction can be interrogated and deconstructed to accommodate the role of technology as having an ontologically embedded position within the very definition of ‘humanity’. Indeed, ‘anthropogenesis’ – the very becoming of humanity – might instead incorporate the role of technological prosthesis to any mind/body dualism in defining the ‘human subject’. We will propose that this ‘dualism’ should be reconsidered for a fundamentally entangled mind-body- technology ‘trialism’ in the emergence of a distinct human being. However, at the same time, this interconnected relationship is also the object of power and control. ‘Know Thyself’ For Descartes, who found accommodation at the Anatomicum of Leiden University, and later Uppsala University,1 one’s divine Self resided within a corporeal body.
