Recently I had a birthday and my eldest son brought me a card and some flowers. I wonder how many dads get flowers on their birthdays? However, I was brought up with flowers as my grandfather commercially grew carnations in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire and I am sure that the love of flowers is in my blood. March will not only see our gardens full of flowers but shops and florists preparing for Mothering Sunday. I do believe that giving a simple bunch of flowers to your mother on Mothering Sunday (Mother’s Day) is very important. The theme of Mothering Sunday, which we celebrate at Stow Bedon Church at 10.30a.m. on 22nd March, will be ‘Mothers’ but also family life as we remember the vital role of the Virgin Mary had on her Son Jesus Christ. Mary is often depicted carrying the madonna lily to show her pureness and innocence but I’m sure that Mary was more than that. Her role in Jesus’ life, the fact she knelt beneath the cross and was there in the early days of the church, shows that she was a woman of determination with many gifts. As we remember our mothers it is easy to either think that they are, or were, all perfect or frankly with lots of faults. The truth is that all parents do their best and Mothering Sunday is a chance to support family life and the parents in our parishes and the massive task they have in the days we live in bringing up children. I have no one now to give flowers to on Mothering Sunday except everyone in church on Mothering Sunday. Do come and celebrate. With every blessing Adrian Bell 4 #"! """" " "" " " "! " !" "! ! The parish church of the Holy Innocents, a large flint structure, was built about 1489, burnt in 1770, and afterward rebuilt. Its earliest register dates from 1708. This parish and manor gave its name to the Folsom family, or Foulsham, as it was first spelt in New England. Members of this family were found inother parts of England, in the earlier times. Market towns are likely to recover quicker than the cities. Money is being invested in the market towns to help improve things like footpaths. Swaffham has secured Lottery funding to preserve historical quality of space/architecture. Several initiatives will be rolled out into the market towns over the coming year. The market towns also rely on people visiting from surrounding villages. There is lots of work going on to deal with County Lines drug issues especially involving vulnerable children.

  • Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office
Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries.

Minor changes were made to this account by Linda Moffatt on 25 July 2017. DATES • Prior to 1752 the year began on 25 March (Lady Day). In order to avoid confusion, a date which in the modern calendar would be written 2 February 1714 is written 2 February 1713/4 - i.e. the baptism, marriage or burial occurred in the 3 months (January, February and the first 3 weeks of March) of 1713 which 'rolled over' into what in a modern calendar would be 1714. • Civil registration was introduced in England and Wales in 1837 and records were archived quarterly; hence, for example, 'born in 1840Q1' the author here uses to mean that the birth took place in January, February or March of 1840. For an individual born after 1837, where only a baptism date is given, assume the birth was registered in the same quarter but the exact date of birth is not presently known. • Electoral Review of Breckland Council Proposal for a Warding Pattern
Electoral Review of Breckland Council Proposal for a warding pattern across Breckland Council to support a Council size of 50 Councillors September 2013 Breckland Council Page 1 05/09/13 Introduction The Council was pleased to receive notification from the Local Government Boundary Commission that the Council’s submission for a council size of 50 had been adopted. The Commission has now asked for submissions proposing Warding patterns that reflect this change. Any group or individual is able to put forward suggestions on Warding patterns for the district. The Local Government Boundary Commission for England will consider all submissions and propose a warding pattern for the district. The Council’s proposals follow the process undertaken by the Working Group of six councillors set up for the purpose of in-depth research into the issues relating to council size and warding. This is a cross- party group with members spread across the district. Guidance issued by the Local Government Boundary Commission suggests that three main rules are followed when a new pattern of wards are produced. They are: Delivering electoral equality for local voters – this means ensuring that each local councillor represents roughly the same number of people so that the value of your vote is the same regardless of where you live in the local authority. Reflecting the interests and identities of local communities – this means establishing electoral arrangements which, as far as possible, maintain local ties and where boundaries are easily identifiable. Promoting effective and convenient local government – this means ensuring that the new wards or electoral divisions can be represented effectively by their elected representative(s) and that the new electoral arrangements as a whole allow the local authority to conduct is business effectively.
