Fellow Bay Area County Chairs - Please pass along this information to your Committees and volunteers. As you know, there is a critical Special Election taking place in CA State Senate District 16 (Fresno area) on May 21 and our Republican Candidate, Andy Vidak, needs our help to get out the vote. According to the Fresno Bee, "The district is 51% Democratic to 29% Republican. But turnout is historically low in the district, and even more so in a special election. That tends to favor Republicans." Vidak has great name recognition and the Bakersfield Californian commented, "If Kings County Republican Andy Vidak wins outright with more than 50 percent of the vote, he will deliver the California Democratic Party an embarrassing setback." The Vidak Campaign is looking for volunteers to travel to the District, walk precincts, and deliver a victory to the candidate and our California Republican Party. The information below is accurate for any Saturday or Sunday between now and May 19. Walks will be ongoing until Election Day on May 21. Volunteers are welcome to come on any day of the week as well. There is some limited housing available at the homes of volunteers in the District; if they are unavailable and you'd like to stay the night, please refer to the hotel list below. As the campaign does not have the funds to cover hotel costs, volunteers would be responsible for that payment. Luckily, it's only about a 3 hour drive down there from the Bay Area so our volunteers could do a day trip. Please RSVP to the campaign if you'd like to volunteer. Ken Maddy had a well-deserved reputation as a person who was not afraid to work across the aisle to solve some of California’s biggest challenges. It was his hope—and our goal—that the Maddy Institute would help nurture the next generation of fearless bi- partisan problem solvers. With your support, the Maddy Institute’s Legislative Intern Program continues to work to fulfill Sen. Maddy’s vision by each year helping 25 to 30 students learn, firsthand, how the political and legislative process works. Chapter 10 EIR/EIS Distribution 10 EIR/EIS DISTRIBUTION The distribution of this Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) emphasizes the importance of providing the documents in a number of different formats to ensure the information is fully accessible to members of the public. This includes the use of electronic media to ensure cost-effective, broad availability to the public and interested parties. The entire Fresno to Bakersfield Locally Generated Alternative (F-B LGA) Draft Supplemental EIR/EIS (Volumes I - III) and the supporting technical reports are available on the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s website. In addition to providing the documents in electronic format, the F-B LGA Draft Supplemental EIR/EIS (Volumes I-III) is also available in hard copy at the repositories listed below. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 23, 2018 Latina Candidates Fill the Ballot FRESNO—Fresno County is fortunate to have several talented Latinas running for office this year. Through their efforts and their example, the Central Valley will benefit from better governance and enable greater political engagement from our Latinx population. Latinx are the largest ethnic group in California, but unfortunately this group is underrepresented in our government. Eight Latina candidates are working to change that and deserve your attention. “Their time is now,” says Michael D. Evans, chair of the Fresno County Democratic Party. “For many years, we have seen Latinas drive many of our best political campaigns and work behind the scenes for our elected officials. Now, many are stepping forward to offer a new approach to governance—responsiveness to the community.” In western Fresno County, into the Salinas Valley and north to Stanislaus County, Anna Caballero is running for State Senate District 12. Currently serving in the State Assembly, Caballero has worked her way up in politics for the past 25 years. As a lawyer, she fought on behalf of striking farmworkers and factory employees. She was rewarded by being elected mayor of Salinas and then moved on to the State Assembly. Now she is running for an open State Senate seat against Madera Republican Rob Poythress. Melissa Hurtado is running in State Senate District 14, which extends from downtown Fresno to northern Kern County. Hurtado currently serves on the Sanger City Council. She has helped people receive the state resources they need to create more work, access to health services and provide quality education.

2018 General Election Guide With the legislative session over, focus has now shifted to the November General Election. As in past election years, the California Chiropractic Association has put together an election guide containing information, and in many cases recommendations, for Assembly and Senate races, key statewide races, and ballot initiatives on the November election. Don’t know your Assembly or Senate district? No need to worry, just go to http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/ , input your address and you’ll be given the districts you live in. Now that you know which districts you reside in, you can print out your district specific CalChiro recommendations via the following links. For the Assembly click HERE and for the Senate click HERE. Assembly Overview Assembly Democrats already enjoy a supermajority plus some. A supermajority in the Assembly translates to 54 out of the 80 members belonging to the same political party -- it gives Democrats the ability to pass legislation raising taxes or fees or place an urgency clause into bills even if no Republicans support those measures. There are currently 55 Democrats serving and while Speaker Anthony Rendon’s priority is to protect this supermajority, including his most vulnerable caucus members, he is also focused on winning districts where Republican voter registration has been shrinking. Assembly Democrats must defend three seats they won in the 2016 Presidential election (AD 60 - Cervantes, AD 65 - Quirk Silva, AD 66 - Muratsuchi) along with several other incumbents who had closer than expected Primary Election results (AD 32 - Salas, AD 44 Irwin). Coinciding with a powerful backlash in corporate boardrooms and among the conservative establishment against Presi- dent Obama and the Democratic Party-controlled Congress, and bol- stered by the media-beloved “tea party” movement, the Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission1 transformed the American political landscape.
