Breakout: HITTIN' ON NOTHING - Irma Thomas (Minit). -3- ' June 3, 1963 Number Six REVIEW AND COMMENT HILLY BILLY DING DONG CHOO CHOO - Appalachians (ABC). Simply delightful. A happy summer time s Dund that will he big with requests and sales. Soupy Sales* version on Reprise will more than likely be the West Coast version. MEMPHIS - Lonnie Mack (Fraternity) It*s really just waking up in Dixie, and promises to be one of the year’s biggest. Once it’s in the top ten, it’ll more than likely stay there for a while. SCARLET O'HARA - Jet Harris (London) #3 in England. It will follow the "Telstar" pattern unless it receives exposure now. The South was late on that English hit. DON’T YOU FORGET IT - Perry Como (RCA) The word is out. And the top music operations have climbed on this one now, cashing in early. Good initial sales. COME GO WITH ME - Dion (Laurie) Label pre-tested the flip, but many picks on this side have changed their mind. Pick of the week on WPLO in Atlanta. IF YOU DON'T COME BACK - (Atlantic) - So far R & B plays have produced fair R & B sales on "this" side. DON'T SAY GOODNIGHT AND MEAN GOODBYE - Shirelles (Scepter) You'd be surprised if you knew how many people there were, who didn't hear their last hit. If you don't hear this one and decide to wait, then you’ll miss the chance to introduce a top twenty seller to your audience. SUMMER’S COMIN' - Kirby St. Romain (inette) Big State Distributing Corp. in Dallas ordered 13,000. It's the KLIF Klimber. DON'T THINK TWICE, IT'S ALRIGHT - New World Singers (Atlantic) A pick of the week on WAKE, Atlanta. Solid air play by all of the station's personnel have already established it as a request item. /MY TRUE CONFESSION - Brook Benton (Mercury) Publisher promotion and affection for the George Jones' oldie should produce split exposure. TWO BROTHERS - The Lettermen (Capitol) Most unusual. Personal appearances by the boys in the South with this type of material was a huge success. So now they've put it on disc. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF - Bobby Vee (Liberty) He has yet to miss. This will be one of his best sellers, ever. It has top 5 potential. Watch it dumb! FIRST QUARREL - Paul and Paula (Phillips) Moderate early sales. But it is gaining with the younger set. If it gets lost, look for the label to go with the flip. SIX DAYS ON THE ROAD - Dave Dudley (GW) If country sounds do well on your station, then this proven Southern seller will do great. EASIER SAID THAN DONE - Essex (Roulette) You should have received this one several weeks ago. Go find it. It's destined for #1. Taking off in Jacksonville and Atlanta. SPRING - Birdlegs & Pauline (VJ) Steve Clark reports it has a red hot R & B seller. Music Pit in Atlanta has it dn their top ten. TIE ME DOWN KANGAROO SPORT - Rolf Harris (Epic) Red Evans pioneered it. Many reports on this one. SUN ARISE was not a smash in our area. This is already a hit in South Carolina. SHAKE A HAND - Linda and Jackie (Brunswick) Limited air exposure has not helped this record, which is selling exceptionally well. Most dealers according to Decca have re ordered. SURF CITY - Jan and Dean (Liberty) Has that "Shut Down" "Surfin" sound. And Arlen Lockerman says ' record just won’t quit. And it won't. This record will be picked and played. LOVE IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME THING - Dick and Dee Dee (WB) Their last record was a popular item on most stations and it sold fairly well in the South. This ballad is beautiful. The lyrics are superb. Bound to be a pick of the week at many spots. RIVER'S INVITATION - Percy Mayfield (Tangerine) A top R & B seller in Macon and Atlanta. A potent "adult" record. I KNOW I KNOW - Pookie Hudson (LL) Distributed by Liberty and has received spotty play. But with just that much exposure has shown signs of doing good business. Don't fail to listen to this one. ALL I WANT TO DO IS RUN - Electras (UA) Selling moderately here and there. An outstanding record. Those who picked it a few weeks back will not be disappointed. I WISH I WERE A PRINCESS - Peggy March (RCA) Great airplay. Reorders, if and when, will tell how strong this follow-up will be. Looks good so far. SO LITTLE TIME - Andy Williams (Columbia) Sure is pretty. Remember he is always a slow starter. - i t - June 3, 1963 Number Six ALEUM PROGRAMMING

Surprise your listeners, your competition, and yourself. Program selected sides from selected albums. The comments will be beneficial toward your operation, if you use care in selection and insertion. How many of today’s singles originated in an album? If the cut has "your sound", play it. You won’t regret itl

OUR DAY WILL COME - Ruby and the Romantics (Kapp) Top side by far is "Stranger On The Shore."

BOBBY VINTON SINGS THE GOODIES, GREAT HITS OF THE GOLDEN GROUPS (Epic) Great backing by the Jordanaires. Recommended: "My Special Angel," and "Silhouettes."

BYE EYE BIRDIE - Soundtrack Cast (RCA) - The Year’s outstanding musical, film, with today's m o d e m music sound and beat. The choices are: "One Last Kiss", "Honestly Sincere," and "A Lot of Livin’ to Do."

THEMES FOR YOUNG LOVERS - Percy Faith (Columbia) "I Will Follow You" is THE side in the album. "" and "Up On The Roof" also blend well with today’s sounds.

SURFIN' ISA - Beach Boys (Capitol) Surf sound and good story line on "Finders Keepers."

DION SINGS THE 15 MILLION SELLERS (Laurie) Top selections for airing are "" and "Save The Last Dance For Me."

FOR YOUR SWEET LOVE - Rick Nelson (Decca) Title song will remind everyone of "Travelin' Man." "Pick Up The Pieces" has that Vee-Shannon dubbed sound the gals will go for. Also recommended: "I Will Follow You."

BABY WORKOUT - Jackie Wilson (Brunswick) - "Say You Will" is based on "Lonely Teardrops", his biggest ever. Well worth time on any show. "Shake, Shake, Shake" may be his next single.

SUKEYAKI - Kyu Sakamoto (Capitol) Wait until your listeners hear his treatment of "Good Timing." It’s the old Jimmy Jones’ hit, only in Japanese.

AWARD WINNING MOTION PICTURE HITS - Connie Francis (MGM) Backbeat on "Over the Rainbow" and "You’ll Never Know" offers a change of pace. Suggested only if the artist is strong in your area.

HITS! HITSJ HITS! - Don Costa (Columbia) A fine package. For airing: "Foolish Little Girl" and "Charms."

DO THE BIRD - Dee Dee Sharp (Cameo) "Reet Petite" was Jackie Wilson’s first hit record. Her rendition is good enough to be a single. Don't miss listening and then playing this one. In view of the fact that she hasn't got a single out now, it's worth any body's time.
