REVIEW AND COMMENT

MARI ENA/CANDY GIRL - Four Seasons (Vee Jay) This one is sure to put the group hack in the top ten on your chart. MARLENA would seem to he "the" top side, but before the record is through, it could be a two-sided item. WITHOUT LOVE - Ray Charles (ABC) Forget the flip. This is a giantI It should be one of the few million sellers of the year I Album is due next week. HOW DO YOU DO IT - Gerry and the Pacemakers (Laurie) Eddie Mathews says forget this one. It has received wide and concentrated exposure. It’s still big in England. THAT’S WHAT MY HEART NEEDS - Otis Redding (Volt) His last record was huge in the South. It will seem minute compared to this one. A much better recording, and bound to be one of the summer's biggest. GREEN GREEN - New Christy Minstrels (Columbia) This will be the biggest "folk style" hit since "Walk Right In." A must play. SO MUCH IN LOVE - Tymes (Parkway) A lot of stations are still missing this one. Out for two months, it continues to build. Suggest you hunt up your copy and climb on a winner. MORE - Kai Winding (Verve) Chances are you might not even audition this record, because of the artist's jazz reputation. Chances are, if you do listen, you will play it, and you will be one of the first to expose a strong instrumental sound. Has all the potential. A LONG VACATION - Rick Nelson (imperial) It did well as an EP a couple of seasons ago, and with air play should obtain sales and requests in all areas. LOVE IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME THING - Dick and Dee'Dee (WB) Considering most Southern stations used their last record, which did well, there hasn't been much reception by program people to this outstanding side. Wait if you will, but it's too strong to be overlooked completely. It will eventually be a chart item. l(WHO HAVE NOTHING) - Ben E. King (Atco) It seems this is headed for the Southern Top Twenty. Requires strong air repetition. SIX DAYS ON THE ROAD - Dave Dudley (Golden Wing) Big Alabama seller, and it won't quit. If you have a copy, play It. Nothing else like it around. Remember the biggest hits are the different or "unique" sounds. YOU BETTER BELIEVE ME - Beverly McKay (Old Town) This promises to be a strong summer R & B record, and should have little trouble getting pop acceptance. WILL'POWER - Cookies (Dimension) I'm not convinced "gospel" is here. The trades say it is, yet there is little sales proof to support this claim. But this has "that" sound and with or without "gospel" sounds like a hit. JACK THE RIPPER - Link Wray (Swan) Seems to be one of those records that will happen market by market, no matter what. Already happening in Nashville and Houston. SPRING - Birdlegs and Pauline (Vee Jay) Over 4,000 sold in Memphis and over 5,000 in Atlanta, with very limited airplay. Everyone seems to like it but the deejays. SAD SAD BOY AND GIRL - Impressions (ABC) Won't stop. Just made the WAKE chart. A strong R & B item, and a very compatible pop sound. STILL NO 2 - Ben Colder (MGM) Listeners should enjoy this one. Sales may be another thing. Worth your attention. PEACE OF MIND/lHE PUPPET - Gene Thomas (UA) Has been a strong item throughout Texas and Florida. It's refusal to stop selling in these areas has forced the label to re-issue. Both sides are chart items. MY SUMMER LOVE - Ruby and the Romantics (Kapp) After a non-movement start, this one is proving to be the surprise of the week. Requests and sales from many spots. Looks like it’s following the pattern of her first hit. LOVE ME ALL THE WAY - Kim Estcn (Tarnla) Label originally worked on the other side until this one busted out in Alabama several weeks ago. Still building. DON’T SAY GOODNIGHT AND MEAN GOODBYE - Shirelles (Scepter) It may be a good sign that . this is off to a slow start, then it will be certain to be around for a long time. Don’t overlook this. It should be on all stations. Many people waited too long on their last hit and missed playing a solid Southern smash. I NO LONGER BELIEVE IN MIRACLES - Ada Ray (Zell’s) Has been a top five request item for several weeks on the Burke Johnson Show, on WAOK. WHAT MAKES THE BLUES - Tommy Roe (ABC) In the long run, this will more than likely be the side. MAGNOLIA - Billy Rains ford (Hermitage) Wide airplay has exposed this side. Godwin Distributors in Atlanta reports several calls. MOONLIGHT BECOMES YOU - A1 Romeo (Laurie) Sounds like it could land in the top ten. A beautiful record. BE CAREFUL OF STONES THAT YOU THROW - Dion (Columbia) Because it has a bonafide hit on Laurie and because this is so unusual for him, it’ll more than likely be a sleeper.

ALBUM PROGRAMMING THE FOUR SEASONS SING AIN’T THAT A SHAME (Vee Jay) Special attention should be given to "Honey Love" and "Happy, Happy Birthday Baby." KILLER JOE - The Rocky Fellers (Scepter) The label has used the same instrumental tracks for this group, in this album, as they used for the hit versions of "Twist and Shout," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", and "Fcolish Little Boy." These axe the sides. SUKTZAKI - Kyu Sakamoto (Capital) Even though several sides axe on the Japanese charts, only one will appeal to your listeners, "Good Timin’". YOU CAN’T SIT DOWN -Dovells (Parkway) A rockin’ treatment of "Short Fan Fannie," and a good clean sound on the Jimmy Sotil hit, "If You Wanna Be Happy." "Wildwood Days" is the flip of their hit, and may merit your exposure. THEMES FOR YOUNG LOVERS - Percy Faith (Columbia) Originally an instrumental, it turned out to be a big vocal hit, but now that its success is history, a great item to play. "I Will Follow Him." I LOVE YOU BECAUSE - A1 Martino (Capitol) Hank Williams always, "You Win Again." Good ballad sound on "Bcquet of Roses." FOOLISH LITTLE GIRL - Shirelles (Scepter) They consistently turn out a superb sounding album product, compatible with the pop single sound. Special attention for "Only Time Will Tell", written by Sam Cooke. YAKETY SAX - Boots Randolph (Monument) Red Evans of WORD in Spartanburg reports tremendous response to "Walk Right In’ and "I Really Don’t Want To Know." Both are well done. DEAN TEX MARTIN RIDES AGAIN (Reprise) This album should produce his next single release. Mary Paich has arranged beautifully. The best to air axe "Candy Kisses" and "Boquet of Roses."

Also suggested: FOR YOUR SWEET LOVE - Rick Nelson (Decca) 21 GOLDEN HITS - Paul Anka (RCA) - Ruby and the Romantics (Kapp) GOLDEN GOODIES VOL’S 1-12 (Roulette) BABY WORKOUT - Jackie Wilson (Brunswick) BYE BYE BIRDIE - Sound Track Cast BOBBY VINTON SINGS THE GOODIES, GREAT HITS OF THE GOLDEN GROUPS (Epic) DION SINGS THE 15 MILLION SELLERS (Laurie) SURFIN’ USA - Beach Boys (Capitol) HITS HITS HITS - Don Costa (Columbia)
