Patterson Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Donald McQuarie Dr. Ewart Skinner © 2007 Carolyn Lea All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Ellen Berry, Advisor This is a polemical dissertation which seeks to serve as an intervention into the theoretical debates and tensions within cultural studies. These debates, which have taken place over the last few decades, have centered on the populist bent within cultural studies, the turn away from the concerns of political economy, and the influence of French theories that emphasize signification, play, and relativism. At stake in these debates is our way of understanding the world and imagining it differently. I argue that the celebratory direction found in much of the work by cultural studies scholars in which resistance, subversion and transgression are located in all things popular has led to an expressivist politics which lacks explanatory power and is symptomatic of a loss of political will. This dissertation critiques three particular directions that exemplify the celebratory turn: claims regarding transgression; claims regarding audience activity; and celebratory accounts of consumption. Chapter one provides an exposition of the debates that have plagued cultural studies, laying the ground for later arguments. Chapter two provides an introduction to reality television which is enlisted as a cultural symptom through which to interrogate weaknesses in theoretical positions (in chapters three through five) adopted by cultural studies scholars and strengths in alternative theoretical legacies. -

Models of Womanhood in the Romanian National Legionary State
DOSIER Cuadernos de Historia Contemporánea ISSN: 0214-400X http://dx.doi.org/10.5209/chco.71887 Fascist Femininities: Models of Womanhood in the Romanian National Legionary State Mihai Stelian Rusu1 Recibido: 15 de junio de 2020 / Aceptado: 11 de julio 2020 Abstract. This paper aims at discerning the models of fascist femininity endorsed by the Romanian National Legionary State. It consists in a quantitative content analysis performed on articles published in the regime’s official newspaper, Cuvântul, in a permanent column addressed to women. The findings point out the prevalence of the traditional model of “domestic womanhood” over the masculinized model of “warrior femalehood.” This quantitative approach grounded on content analysis is complemented by a qualitative approach based on a visual analysis of women’s depiction in the Legion’s printed press. Visual commercials, product advertising featuring women and other depictions of female figures reveal a third, heterodox, type of womanhood that we suggest calling “Legionary chic.” Based on these findings, the study concludes by pointing out the heterogeneity of the National Legionary State’s politics of womanhood. Este artículo tiene como objetivo examinar los modelos de feminidad fascista respaldados por el Estado Legionario Nacional rumano. Consiste en un análisis cuantitativo de contenido realizado sobre artículos publicados en el periódico oficial del régimen, Cuvântul, en una columna permanente dirigida a las mujeres. Los resultados señalan la prevalencia del modelo tradicional de “feminidad doméstica” sobre el modelo masculinizado de “feminidad guerrera”. -

"Our vision is that Coop Norden will be the leading and most innovative retailer in the Nordics with a consumer cooperative identity," Roland Svensson of KF Sweden said. What prompted the merger was the recent increase in competition from large international chains and the pace of changes in the industry. -

Since the late 1980s, Korean pop music has aspired to be a more advanced industry and establish an international presence, based on the economic leap and democratization as a springboard. Contemporary K-pop, originating from the underground dance scene in the 1980s, succeeded in transforming Korean pop music into a modern and youth-oriented genre with a new style dubbed "rap/dance music." The rise of dance music changed the landscape of Korean popular music and became the cornerstone of the K-pop idol music. In the era of globalization, K-pop’s unique aesthetics and strategy, later termed “Cultural Technology,” achieved substantial returns in the international market. Throughout this evolution, Korean Americans were vital players who brought K-pop closer to its mission of modern and international pop music. In the age of globalization, K-pop's modernity and identity are evolving in a new way. -

Introduction The ICA Global 300: The 2008 listing This is the third consecutive year that the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) publishes the Global300 list to highlight the important role co-operative enterprises play in national and international economies. The Global 300 listing responds to those who continue to underestimate the significance of co-operatives. It provides financial and other data that proves that co-operatives are successful businesses, important employers and contribute in real terms to economic stability and sustainable development. More than just a list: A Global Online Database To enhance data collection facility and ensure reliable data, the ICA has started work on a global on-line database. The web-based global co-operative database will include quantitative data - financial and other indicators - but will also grow into a one-stop shop to learn about the Global 300 co-operatives, ICA members and other co-operatives. In a staged development, the database will generate co-operative profiles including financial data, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), sustainability and social reports, as well as links to current news. The database is expected to assist in strengthening ICA’s role in building networks of global co-operative leaders. It also has the potential of leading and co-ordinating global, regional and national initiatives on data collection and evidence-based policy and advocacy. Finally, the development of the on-line database will further address ICA’s strategic objective of promoting co- operatives as a special values based business model by building a co-operative business intelligence service for analysis and benchmarking performance, not only in financial terms, but also in terms of the co-operative values and principles. -

The trite phrase we often hear, “out with the old and in with the new,” often refers to changing events in our lives. Birthdays, the coming of theO New Year, and the change of a political administration are good illustra- tions of transitions in our culture. But transitions occur in other ways as well. The season of spring brings forth a burst of color and radiance that adorn our campus. The beautiful flowers, plants, and trees that surround us proclaim that spring has returned in all its glory. Of course, students are also in transition … and in transformation. Students are in the final stages of completing research papers and preparing for the last semester tests and final examinations. Our spring intercollegiate athletic teams are completing their respective seasons and, hopefully, preparing for regional, district and national competition. Some of our students are preparing for the transition from SMC to another institution where they will continue to pursue their educational and vocational goals. Although we celebrate their transition to another institution, we shall miss them because in their transformation, they have become part of us and part of our heritage as an institution of higher learning. Just as we celebrate the transitions and transformations of our students, we also celebrate the transitions of our College. Begun in 1911, Textile Industrial Institute, the forerunner of Spartanburg Methodist College, first offered only a high school curriculum.
