Southern Gold Coast, New South Wales SOUTHERN GOLD COAST, NEW SOUTH WALES Getting there Straddling the Queensland and New South Wales border, the series of beaches from Currumbin Beach to Cabarita Beach are some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Australia. These picturesque beaches are approximately 125kms – or a relaxing one and a half hours drive – south from Brisbane along the M1, making them an ideal destination for your next road trip or weekend away. A quick drive south along the M1 with some summer music playing on the stereo will have you forgetting your worries and enjoying the breath taking scenery. Your hardest decision will be which beach to head to first! With the windows down and the ocean air filling your lungs, you will soon be relaxed and ready to enjoy your surroundings at some of Australia’s most striking beaches. What you’ll find Spend a couple of hours on the southern Gold Coast and you will be hooked. It’s easy to see why it’s a favourite with locals and visitors alike! The region is renowned for its safe and calm swimming sections, world class surf breaks and picturesque sandy beaches. If you’re not keen on swimming, a short drive west will take you to the World Heritage listed Mt Warning National Park and surrounding dramatic volcanic landscapes, where you’ll find plenty of activities to indulge in. Things to do If you base yourself in Coolangatta, four beaches are all within easy walking distance - Kirra, Coolangatta, Greenmount and Rainbow Bay. When the surf is pumping, you can guarantee you’ll be treated to watching some of the most talented surfers in action. If you get really lucky, you may see world surfing legends like Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson who live locally catching a wave! If you’re keen to for a bit of activity during the day but don’t fancy a dip in the ocean, why not hit the open bikeways? Ditch the car and opt for peddle power by hiring tandem or single bicycles from the local bike shops and slowly exploring the meandering coastline. You can then spend a lazy afternoon as the sun sets watching waves roll in while enjoying a cold drink at one of the surf clubs or cafes, or utilise the large number of free gas barbecues on the beachfront, just down the beach from the club. If you’re after a more formal meal, there are a great variety of restaurants and cafes to choose from which are all sure to impress you with the quality and variety of options. For those with small children, the nearby Mount Cougal National Park is great for families to visit in summer. The 800 square metre park is filled with cascades which form perfect rock slides for the kids to enjoy. Be prepared With such a large variety of activities to indulge in, it’s a great idea to prepare a small pack of travel goods. Supercheap Auto stocks a great range of equipment for a day trip or a weekend away. If you have young children and are taking the family away, Supercheap Auto also has a great range of products to keep the kids comfortable and entertained on the drive. Typically, tabloids are considered to provide more sensational coverage than broadsheets. We investigated how sharks and shark–human interactions were portrayed in four major Australian newspapers during a period of a record number of shark attacks in Australian waters. There was strong focus on human risk from sharks, and over-reportage of negative aspects. Thirty incidents were recorded: two fatal, 20 injury, and eight ‘near-miss’. Of 309 ‘shark’ articles surveyed, 24% mentioned fatalities (65% occurred prior to the study, some decades earlier). Injury was reported in 40% of articles, and ‘near-miss’ in 33% (89% related to an incident in South Africa involving an Australian surfing celebrity). The tabloid, Telegraph, published substantially more shark-related articles and photographs than other newspapers. There was otherwise no consistent pattern of difference between genre or newspapers. Keywords: biased reporting; anthropogenic focus; shark incidents; shark attacks; news media bias; genre bias reporting; shark conservation; marine ecosystems; ‘fake news’ We are not afraid of predators, we’re transfixed by them, prone to weave stories and fables and chatter endlessly about them ::: (E.O.
