@DUAthletics Facebook.com/DUAthletics YouTube.com/DUAthletics Instagram.com/DUAthletics DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GAME SUMMARY - ASHLAND CALEDONIA, Mich. - On a bright crisp fall afternoon, the visiting Eagles of Ashland ranked No. 20 in Division II, had a crisp precise outing in a 38-0 win over Davenport University. The Eagles (4-1, 3-0 GLIAC) scored a touchdown on their first four drives while Davenport (0-5, 0-4 GLIAC) were forced to punt on their first four drives. The Eagles were the beneficiary of great field position on their first two drives beginning both in Davenport territory. Ashland marched 49 yards in five plays on their opening drive capped off by a 15-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Travis Tarnowski to junior running back Andrew Vaughn for a 7-0 lead. After Davenport lost nine yards on their next possession and punted to their own 35, Ashland needed nine plays before getting into the end zone. Vaughn carried the ball four straight times in the drive and then Tarnowski tossed a 10-yard touchdown to junior Kamaron Green, who made tacklers miss before diving into the end zone for a 14-0 lead with 3:10 left in the first quarter. Davenport punted on the final play of the first quarter and Ashland took over at their own 27. Tarnowski went deep on the first play and pass interference was called against DU. Tarnowski then completed a 19-yard pass to sophomore Stanley Jackson Jr. down to the DU 35. Vaughn took it from there rushing five straight times including a one-yard toss sweep around right end on the 10th play of the 77-yard drive for a 21-0 lead. Ashland's defense forced a three-and-out and a poor punt of 23 yards set up the Eagles at their own 45. Another pass interference call on the first play put the ball into Panther territory at the 40. Sophomore Keishaun Sims came into the backfield and carried three times for 14 yards before a 17-yard draw play resulted in the fourth touchdown for Ashland and a 28-0 lead with 5:49 left until halftime. In the second half, Ashland punted on their first drive and Davenport took over at their own 29. The Panthers got a first down on the drive but then William James threw a pass out in the flat and senior Toney Peters jumped the route and raced 45 yards for a pick six to give AU a 35-0 lead with 11:25 left in the third quarter. The Panthers best chance at getting on the scoreboard came after a punt on the next drive which hit sophomore Michael Church and DU recovered at the Ashland 20-yard line. The Panthers did not move the ball and settled for a 37-yard field goal by junior Julian Castro, which was blocked by senior Austin Utter and the ball went over to the Eagles at their own 48. The scoring was concluded in the third as senior Aidan Simenc booted a 33-yard field goal with 4:43 left in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw Ashland run the ball 10 times for 29 yards and not attempt a pass. Davenport moved the ball for 67 yards on 18 plays but went 0-for-3 on third down and 0-for-1 on fourth down. The Davenport defense limited the Eagles to 274 total yards well below the 411.5 yards per game entering the contest. Both teams rushed the ball 37 times with Ashland gaining 165 yards and Davenport 104 yards. Vaughn rushed for 103 yards on 17 carries for Ashland. Michael Catching rushed for 60 yards and 10 carries for Davenport. Sophomore Brian Williams led Davenport with eight tackles including six solo stops and two pass breakups.

@DUAthletics Facebook.com/DUAthletics YouTube.com/DUAthletics Instagram.com/DUAthletics DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GAME SUMMARY - NORTHERN MICHIGAN MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Panther football team took three quarters to get some offensive success as they scored 14 points in a 10-minute span of the fourth quarter in a 24-14 loss at Northern Michigan. The Panthers (0-4, 0-3 GLIAC) fell behind 17-0 at halftime and then started to make a comeback as they cut the lead down to 17-14 with 5:22 left in the game. The Wildcats (1-2, 1-1 GLIAC) then broke off a big run on their next drive to secure the 10-point win.

One thing that has plagued the Davenport defense this season has been allowing points on the opponent's opening drive. That continued again on Saturday as NMU took the opening kick and marched 70 yards in just five plays capped off by a 49-yard TD run by Jake Mayon. The Panthers were forced into a 3-and- out on their next drive and the Wildcats quickly increased their lead to 14-0. Mayon carried the ball three times as NMU reached the DU 33. The scoring play was Ryan Johnson hooking up with Ryan Knight from 33 yards on the eighth play of the 65-yard drive.

Davenport never could recover from that onslaught in the first half. After another punt to the NMU 5-yard line, the Wildcats went 90 yards in seven plays but the DU defense held and NMU settled for a 22-yard field goal by Dalton Ray for a 17-0 advantage with 14:09 left until halftime. DU got it into NMU territory twice in the second quarter but could not muster any points.

The defenses held tough in the third quarter with no one scoring points. As the fourth quarter began, DU had the ball at the NMU 18 and one play later Michael Catching rushed for 10 yards down to the NMU 5. Catching finished the drive with a five-yard TD plunge to cut the lead to 17-7 with 13:56 left in the contest.

The DU defense kept hopes alive with back- to-back stops and the offense took over at the NMU 26 after a 29-yard punt return by Nate Couturier. William James used his legs on the third play of the drive to score from 13 yards and make it 17-14 with 5:22 remaining. The Wildcats had the back-breaker as Mayon's 58-yard TD run concluded the scoring at 24-14.

Mayon had a big game on the ground with 26 carries for 247 yards. James led DU with 88 rushing yards on 21 carries. He also completed 10-of-19 passes for 75 yards. C.J. Thornton led the Panther defense with seven tackles.

"I'm extremely proud of this football team," said head coach Sparky McEwen. "We walked into a tough environment and fought like a bunch of determined men. The small things continue to hurt us but we gave ourselves a chance to win today and that is what's important."

GAME SUMMARY - TIFFIN The Davenport football team showed signs of progress on Saturday in a 27-14 loss to Tiffin at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Dragons came out strong in the first half gaining 240 yards but the Panthers made adjustments in the second half limiting Tiffin to 69 yards. The Dragons came out on the road and looked poised driving 84 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Nick Watson hooked up with Tyler Denton on a 44-yard screen pass for the score on 3rd-and-8 to make it 7-0. The teams traded punts until DU took over at their own 42 with 3:43 left in the first quarter. The Panthers put together a solid drive mixing run and pass and moved the ball to the Tiffin 7 at the end of the quarter. The first play of the second quarter was a great run fake and pass to a wide-open Colin Smith from William James to tie the score at 7-7. It was the first touchdown pass from James and catch for Smith. Tiffin answered back to take a 10-7 lead on their next possession. Joseph Metcalf kicked a 35-yard field goal capping off a seven-play, 58-yard drive which lasted 2:45. Tiffin regained possession with 4:31 left until halftime after DU was forced to punt from their own end zone giving the ball to the Dragons at the DU 36. The screen pass once again worked as Hunter Rockwell motored 35 yards to the one-yard line and then JaQuan Hardy bulled in for the score on the next snap for a 17-7 advantage heading into halftime. The teams were at a stalemate early in the third quarter and the game changed for DU as they were driving into Tiffin territory. James was forced out of the pocket to his right and on the run threw an interception that was returned 73 yards for a touchdown by Delan Wynn giving the Dragons a 24-7 lead with 5:04 left in the third. DU coughed up the ball at their own 17 on their next drive and Tiffin was held to a 27-yard field goal with 1:12 left in the third. Davenport fought back with 31-yard run by Marcus Jester and then a 43-yard touchdown combo between Cody Long and Deondre Moore. Moore caught a short pass and turned upfield running the final 33 yards down the near sideline. Tiffin missed a chip shot 21-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter and then DU moved the ball 36 yards into Tiffin territory but the drive stalled and a punt gave it back to the Dragons. DU's defense forced a three-and-out and again the offense moved across midfield but on 4th- and-10 it was a Long pass missing Keion Powers at the TU 45. Neither team could score in the final quarter as Davenport fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC. Davenport gained 188 yards of total offense while Tiffin finished with 309. Jester carried 13 times for 80 yards and Moore caught four passes for 67 yards. Long completed 4-of- 15 passes for 51 yards. James finished 5-of- 10 for 27 yards through the air. C.J. Thornton led the defense with 11 tackles and Kye Black added nine stops including a five-yard sack and a pass breakup.

GAME SUMMARY - GRAND VALLEY STATE The Davenport Panther football team started off their GLIAC voyage with a tall task at No. 14 Grand Valley State on Saturday night at . For the first half it was a very tight game, but a short field and a few miscues in the second half led to a 48-0 loss to the Lakers under the lights in front of the second-largest crowd in GVSU history (16,734). The Panthers (0-2) trailed 13-0 at the break but could not sustain that pace allowing 35 second-half points. The teams traded possessions early in the contest and Davenport had a significant drive brewing facing a 4th-and-3 at the GV 32-yard line. Cody Long's pass to Michael Catching was incomplete however to stall the drive. The Lakers drove inside the red zone for the first time on their next drive as Bart Williams passed for 40 yards down to the DU 16-yard line. Bryce Lovelace yanked a field goal wide right from 33 yards to remain a scoreless contest. Davenport gained just two yards on their next drive and then special teams came up big for the Lakers. Eric Plate blocked Jerred McGuire's punt and Luke DeLong recovered in the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 1:22 left in the first quarter. The Lakers then took a 13-0 lead on a drive that started at midfield with 8:30 left in the second quarter. GVSU went to the air for 18 yards and then tight end Pete Cender was wide open over the middle for a 15-yard strike followed by a missed PAT off the right upright. The kicking woes continued for the Lakers on their next drive as it stalled at the DU 15 after covering 43 yards but a J.J. McGrath 32-yard field goal hit the right and then grazed the left upright to keep it 13-0 with 50 seconds left in the first half. Davenport gained 42 yards in the half and held the potent Laker offense to 151 yards. The Panthers had their best drive of the game to start the third quarter driving down to the GV 30-yard line and were faced with a 4th-and-5. Long threw behind an open William Gist and he could not turn his body around quick enough for the incomplete pass and turnover on downs. GVSU took advantage as Marty Carter ripped off a 40-yard run on the next play followed by a Williams to Brandon Bean four-yard TD slant on the eighth play of the drive for a 20-0 lead. Turnovers then started to put the game out of reach for Davenport. Long threw an interception at the DU 38-yard line that was returned by Tyler Bradfield to the DU 26 on the third play of the next drive. Carter then caught a 12-yard pass and scampered 14 yards to paydirt with 6:21 left in the third for a 27-0 lead. Nate Couturier fumbled the ensuing kickoff giving the ball to GV at the DU 28 yard-line. Six plays later, Carter rumbled for five yards into the end zone for a 34-0 lead. In the fourth quarter, Bryce Young-Walls and Caleb Richard each had a rushing touchdown for the Lakers to get to the final score of 48-0. The final total yards was 423-121 in favor of the home team. DU was 1-for-14 on third down while limiting GVSU to 2-for- 12. Brent Showers led the defense with 10 tackles as DU recorded nine tackles for loss on the evening. "We hung tough in the first half and played well on defense to keep it close," said head coach Sparky McEwen. "The biggest thing in the second half is depth at this level. Our defense was playing with a short field and stamina played a role. We want our guys to play a full 60 minutes and that didn't happen tonight. We got to find a way to sustain a rhythm on offense and create plays moving forward next week against Tiffin."

GAME SUMMARY - CONCORDIA It was not the kind of debut that head coach Sparky McEwen and the Panthers imagined as Davenport fell 25-6 to Concordia University at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on Thursday night. The Panthers got off to a slow start and could not muster enough offense in the season opener. Concordia took advantage of Davenport's defense early in the game scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions. The Panthers took the kickoff and drove all the way into the red zone facing a 4th-and-1 at the five-yard line. William Gist was stopped and lost three yards giving the ball to the Cardinals. They took advantage driving 92 yards in nine plays capped off by a Joe Conner two-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead with 7:12 left in the first quarter.

After a three-and-out, Concordia got the ball at their own 38 yard line and marched 62 yards in nine plays with a 10-yard TD run by Conner breaking tackles before going into the end zone for a 15-0 lead with 46 seconds left in the first after a botched hold on the extra point and instead threw a two-point conversion. The second quarter saw the Cardinals score again at 12:07 as Conner broke off an incredible 60- yard TD run for his third score of the first half and a 22-0 lead.

Davenport then played tough defense for the rest of the game allowing just 128 yards on the final 11 drives for the Cardinals. DU got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter on a six-play, 77-yard drive lasting 1:35. Hunter Krause connected with Keion Powers down the home sideline on a 29-yard TD but the extra point attempt was fumbled to make it 22-6. Concordia's defense had seven tackles for loss and three sacks for the night and allowed just 32 yards in the third quarter and 38 yards in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Davenport could not sustain drives going 3-of-13 on third down and were also 0-for-2 on fourth down. Krause went 8-for-11 for 104 yards through the air. Marcus Jester led the rushers with 24 yards on eight carries. Jerred McGuire averaged 43 yards per boot on three tries for Davenport. Kye Black led the defense with 10 tackles and also forced a fumble. Brent Showers also chipped in with eight tackles.
