QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB Desborough Town have a remarkable history since it was formed TODAY’S in 1896 and joined the Northants League which is now known as VISITORS the United Counties League. It has been a continual member of that combination apart from Season 1945/46 when the club had not been reformed following the break for the second world war.

The club was first affiliated to the Northants Football Association in 1896 with the Secretary being Mr A.L Mobbs the landlord of the Swan Inn which used to stand in Lower Street. The club has always played its home matches at the Waterworks Field and in the early days used to change in the outbuildings at the back of the Swan Inn before marching up the Braybrooke Road to the ground. The DESBOROUGH second season saw the Formation of Town and the TOWN Cobblers first ever League game was played at the Waterworks Field on 25th September 1897 with Ar Tarn triumphing by two clear Facts goals ONLINEand COPY Figures It was at this period that Desborough inherited the nicknames that are not forgotten with the passing of time. ‘Ar Tarn’ the local dialect Founded meaning our town has probable survived the longest ‘The Buckets’ 1896 is a reference to the adjacent waterworks and was used by the local newspaper’s licensed crank in his reports on the Desborough Nickname matches at the time. The most infamous of them all was ‘Dirty Ar Tarn Desborough’ which had no reference to the team at all and were remarks made by a visiting medical officer referring to the town’s poor sanitation. Manager Jim LeMasurier Success on the field came quickly to the Desborough Town team and in season 1900/01 they captured the Northants League title for the very first time. There was a double celebration in the 2018-19 town as the club also captured the Northants Junior Cup beating United Counties Northampton Town Reserves in the Final Desborough’s first Football league glory in the F.A Cup came in season 1910/11 when they reached Premier Division the Fourth Qualifying Round of the competition before losing to Midland League Champions Chesterfield at the Waterworks Field Ground before a crowd of over 2000 spectators. Chesterfield went on to R-Inn Stadium beat Rotherham and Bolton before eventually losing to Chelsea. Desborough’s best run in the competition was reserved for season 1926/27 when they reached the first round proper of the competition and were drawn at home to Doncaster Rovers.

The joy which swept the town was short lived however when the committee decided that the gate would be severely reduced by the fact that Kettering were playing Coventry City in another tie just six miles away and the game was switched to Doncaster’s Belle Vue ground. This proved to be a disastrous decision as many of the towns spectators claimed they had been robbed of the greatest game ever to be staged at the Waterworks Field and deserted the club. As a result the club soon found itself with financial problems and the glory years of the twenties were not to be repeated. As for the game itself Desborough were drawing with just eight minutes

remaining when the match was abandoned through fog and in the midweek replay they went down by three clear goals.

The twenties were certainly the glory years for Desborough Town as they captured trophy after trophy and on only two occasions in 1949 and 1967 have they been able to top the league chart since. However whilst they may not have had so much success on the field the progress behind the scenes has certainly been tremendous. They have purchased the freehold of the ground allowing them a secure future, they have erected the best floodlighting system in the league and more recently have erected a first class social club following the destruction of their original premises through fire in 2009 and in 2014 the club rebuilt the changing facilities. The transfer of the cricket club to a new ground has now seen the club in total control of their premises with full training facilities next to the main pitch ONLINE COPY

As the number of COVID-19 infections continues to increase, a reminder of the government’s instructions for us all to follow and comply with.

- Wash your hands - - Wear a face covering - - Observe social distancing - - Obey the rules -

We must also ask all supporters to adhere to our COVID-19 guidelines at all times whilst in the ground and surrounding areas plus support our “track and trace” measures which are mandatory.

Help us to help you, our supporters and demonstrate that football at our level in the non league pyramid can continue to be enjoyed outdoors by both players and fans alike. We hope this will enable football clubs like ours to be a source of sports activity and entertainment during the current pandemic restrictions and beyond.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation

We would like to remind supporters of their responsibility to the FA Respect Campaign.

It is also very important referees and assistant referees are shown the respect that they deserve whilst trying to carry out the very difficult job of controlling a game of football.

There will always be decisions that we may not agree with but we do not think that anybody should have to put up with some of the abuse that has been heard at some games. It should be remembered that without officials we do not have a game of football.

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB AH it’s good to be back! Well, sort of back. If we are back. Covid-19 has brought many challenges and keeping up with the latest government guidance is certainly one of them in this fast moving feast.

At the time of writing, news has just been announced that fans can return to grounds, in limited numbers and depending on what Tier you are in.

We are still waiting on full clarification for ‘non elite’ games and all the variables around crossover of Tiers and so on.

BUT it felt like a promising announcement from the Prime Minister as we hopefully inch closer to a much brighterONLINE future. COPY For Step 1 and 2 clubs, this period has been draining. Yes, games have been going ahead and there has been government support through the National Lottery, but the absence of fans has been felt acutely.

Likewise, it has been tough for Steps 3 and below. Fans have been back in grounds but there has been the additional responsibility on clubs to make sure their grounds are Covid secure, while adhering to all manner of guidelines and protocols. Again, it’s been hard to keep up with.

When Lockdown 2.0 was introduced, that saw the season halted in its tracks and more uncertainty. It’s been a tough few weeks once again.

BUT, hopefully you are reading this piece in a programme, at a game, in the fresh air, with fans socially distanced alongside you and looking forward to watching some live football. Or you’re reading this having been at a game, in the fresh air, with fans socially distanced alongside you and you enjoyed watching some live football.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it is to not take Non-League football for granted. Global pandemic wasn’t in the thoughts of many, if any, people this time last year. Who’d have predicted within a couple of months of Christmas that a whole campaign would get blown out of the water by a virus?

Since the season kicked off again at the beginning of September, I’ve enjoyed every minute of being in a ground with fans, albeit in limited capacities.

It’s been so tough for those fans of Steps 1 and 2 clubs who still haven’t had a chance to watch their team properly since back in March. Hopefully they will be soon.

So, let’s enjoy it and make the most of it. You can bet football, rightly or wrongly, will be held up as an example among the wider public.

Let’s do all we can to help our Non-League clubs. There is still a pandemic and together we can all make it easier for clubs. They don’t make the rules but they are certainly under pressure to adhere to them.

So let’s all work as a team. Do as we are told, wear our masks where asked to, “test and trace” and keep our distance to help keep this show on the road.

It’s good to be back. We all want it to stay that way. By Sam Emery

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY

The origins of Quorn Football Club can be traced back to 1924 when a group of local lads from the Village Wesleyan Chapel formed a football team. In 1937 the Club, then known as Quorn Methodists gained access to the Leicestershire Senior League with a final name change to Quorn Football Club taking place in 1952. ThroughoutONLINE its history Quorn FC has consistently beenCOPY a high flyer among Leicestershire’s senior teams, producing several players that have progressed to higher levels of excellence. Jackie Lee a Centre Forward went on to play for Leicester City and Derby County becoming an international, when he played for England v Ireland and scored. Richie Barker, who went on to play for Derby County and Notts County later managed Stoke City, Dion Dublin, who enjoyed a great playing career joining Manchester United, Aston Villa, Coventry, Leicester City, and Norwich as well as playing for England.

In recent times Luke Varney, who was sold by the Club to Crewe Alexandra FC, and who developed into one of their most exciting players scoring 25 goals for them in the 2006/7 season, his quality was then recognised by Charlton Athletic who signed him for £2.5 Million in July 2007.

Quorn moved to its present ground on Farley Way in 1994 with the establishment of a new modern Clubhouse large enough to cater for the demands of a progressive Football Club both on and off the field, a football pitch with a playing surface that is second to none, and a large Astroturf training area.

Driven by the Club’s ambition to have a ground satisfying the facility criteria of Leagues at a higher level in the Football Pyramid, the following 14 years has seen remarkable progress, with the development of a 350 Seat Grandstand, built with the potential of increasing it’s future capacity to 500, large spectator car parking facilities, outside spectator toilets, and the establishment of a large grass training pitch to compliment the Astroturf.

The 2019-20 season sees the Club looking for a bit of stability, the First Team Management led by our First Team Manager – Martin Carruthers will look to improve the playing squad with new signings, whilst still looking to bring on the Clubs youngsters. Martin’s Management CV is well known in Non-League Football as well as a fantastic playing career with many clubs but best known for playing with Stoke City, United, Southend United, Scunthorpe United and Macclesfield Town.

Martin was last manager at Basford United FC who play at Step 3 in The Evo-Stik Northern - Premier Division.

Ade Draycott and Frank Benjamin manage our Under 21 Squad in The – Under 21 East Division.
