Cancer Fund Annual Review 2014-2015 Message from Our Founder & CEO

Dear Donors, Supporters and Friends, It is truly wonderful that we are experiencing an era in which people are living longer and the call for cancer support services is getting louder. Today there are very few people who have not been touched by cancer in some way, whether directly themselves or through a family member or a friend or work colleague. It is something we at the Hong Kong Cancer Fund are all too well aware of.

Over the 2014-2015 year we saw a sharp 33% rise in the number of registered users at our CancerLink Centres.

The support services we provide therefore are more important than ever. Our centres and our team of professionals are there to offer not only information but support, hope and care.

All of this is made possible through donors and supporters such as yourself. You are the pillars of our organisation – and it begins with your generosity. It’s friends like you who understand the needs of those we serve.

And so as we look back on a year in which more people attended our workshops and therapeutic groups – the number of visits to CancerLink Centres was more than 106,000 and the number of hotline calls was over 13,000 – I sincerely thank all our donors, volunteers and staff for giving the gift of hope.

As we set our sights on opening a new centre in the future it’s heart-warming to know we have people watching over us every step of the way, especially in these challenging financial times.

Sally Lo, MBE Founder and Chief Executive Hong Kong Cancer Fund

ANNUAL REVIEW 2014-2015 / 13 PROVIDING SUPPORT

Addressing Psychosocial Needs Emotional support is important for those on a cancer journey, and we aim to provide a comprehensive range of needs-based quality services in this area. Access to nurses, a dietician, social workers, a clinical psychologist and specialists is made available through our programmes, workshops, groups and talks. A series of family-centred services offers a channel through which to discuss family relationships that may be strained by a diagnosis and advice for those taking on the unexpected role of caregiver.

Relief Funds More than 1.3 million of Hong Kong’s 7.2 million people lived in poverty in 2014, according to government figures. The effects of cancer on these people and those on low incomes are devastating. We respond to their needs through a hardship fund that aims to resolve short-term financial strain and other issues that they face. They and those in the sandwich class can benefit from our Cancer Drug Relief Fund (a joint effort with GlaxoSmithKline), which subsidises the cost of drugs. The amount spent on relief, prostheses, food coupons and cancer drug costs under this fund increased by 3% compared with last year. Young Adults Our YOU CAN support service helps young adults (aged between 18 and 39) regain their self-confidence through targeted activities. Through a range of unique programmes we aim to empower participants to embrace positivity and focus on their recovery. In addition to workshops covering areas such as relationships, sex and employment, there is a peer-support group as well as psychotherapeutic and counselling services.

14 / HONG KONG CANCER FUND Measuring Effectiveness We measure and evaluate our programmes on a regular basis to ensure their quality and effectiveness through screening, assessment and monitoring.

Distress Thermometer and Problem Check List We use these tools, which have been developed by the US-based National Comprehensive Cancer Network, to identify the distress level and concern of those with cancer and their caregivers so they can be directed to the appropriate services.

User Opinion Surveys Programme participants are asked to provide feedback on programmes so that the benefits can be measured and programmes can be enhanced where necessary. “ As a result of Pre-post Measurement the programme I For selected programmes we use psychometric tools to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of a programme feel happy living in in achieving its objectives. the here and now.” – Samantha Ho, CancerLink user

O ur efforts to provide comfort to those touched by cancer extend well beyond physical and emotional programmes and access to relief funds. We also fund development and research projects in hospitals and universities. The aim is to advance knowledge about coping with cancer and improving the lives of those touched by it.

Meeting Practical Needs Practical equipment can make a significant difference to quality of life. Wheelchairs and walking aids assist with mobility, while wigs can play an important role in boosting the self-confidence of women who have undergone chemotherapy. We funded such items at Queen Elizabeth and Tuen Mun hospitals and at our CancerLink centres as well.

In addition, we funded medical equipment at a number of hospitals throughout the year. For Kwong Wah Hospital we funded the purchase of equipment aimed at helping with the treatment and recovery of those with breast cancer. ANNUAL REVIEW 2014-2015 / 17 Raising Awareness

Knowledge is Power We see myriad benefits from increasing community awareness. Effective campaigns help lead to early detection – which can save or extend lives. They also promote greater understanding, helping to reduce the stigma attached to the disease. Our numerous campaigns throughout the year utilised a variety of channels – from the web and Facebook to television commercials and public talks. The aim was to reach as many people as possible and make Hong Kong a cancer-smart community.

Connected to the Community Our website is often the first point of contact. It offers practical information and advice on potential symptoms, tests and treatments, leading visitors through what can be an overwhelming medical process. The number of visitors to our website increased by 36% year-on-year. We also proactively communicated with the public through Facebook, where our posts highlighted events, news and tips on healthy living.

Spreading the Message Our goal to inform is expressed in a variety of ways. The media and public health talks were among the channels we used to get our messages to a mass audience in Hong Kong. We stepped up our efforts in this area over the year, providing regular columns in newspapers. The content, developed in collaboration with medical experts, covered a wide range of topics: from augmenting our cancer-awareness campaigns and offering advice on healthy living to answering questions about cancer. Information was also available through 36 booklets, designed in an easy-to-read fashion and using everyday language. Available in printed formats and as downloads from our website (and therefore potentially reaching a global audience), they aim to reduce the fear about the cancer journey and inform readers about the options open to them with respect to testing and treatment. Soft copies of these publications were downloaded more than 66,000 times. “ I really appreciated being able to come to the talk – the information from the doctors was great.”– Daisy Wong, Health talk attendee

18 / HONG KONG CANCER FUND A Cancer- Smart City Over the year we launched four main education campaigns, including ones on skin and breast cancer. Post-campaign surveys showed that women were more aware of our public-education initiatives (including our prostate cancer campaign), pointing to the importance of encouraging women to get their partners to be checked for male-related cancers. Our prostate cancer campaign, launched in November 2014, reached about 2.5 million people.

ANNUAL REVIEW 2014-2015 / 19 Making A Difference

Giving Generously As we receive no money from the government or The Community Chest, we rely on donations to fund our work. Our ability to provide our services and programmes therefore depends on the amazing generosity of the people of Hong Kong. Survivors Giving Back Hong Kong Cancer Fund touches the lives of many people. One of the most gratifying aspects of what we do is working with cancer survivors. They volunteer their time to share their personal experiences with those who have just been diagnosed or are embarking on their own journey. Their understanding and Passionate Supporters compassion helps to dispel misconceptions and fears, While we raise funds through a variety of channels – from reassure and provide peace of mind. Over the 2014-15 year, the members of our Circle of Friends generously donated a total of HK$49 million. Their kindness will continue to be crucial to giving hope and comfort to those who use our services.

20 / HONG KONG CANCER FUND Everyone Can Help Because every little helps, we encourage members of the public and corporations to raise money for us by creating their own activity. Our aim is to let everyone know that they can make a difference – and more and more people are. To this end, any individual or company can sign up online to register their planned event. We then host a page on our website to invite friends or colleagues to donate. DIY events of all sizes were held over the year – from a couple who asked that people donate to celebrate their wedding to a half marathon that raised in excess of HK$300,000. Initiatives such as these have a double benefit: they get people involved and promote cancer- awareness throughout the community.

Challenges to Our Work The Executive Committee identifies the main risks to our operation, and ensures that systems and processes are in place to mitigate any potential effects. In addition to these there are risks that are specific to the nature of our organisation. These include the following.
