Green York University In 1889, George Paxton Young, the University of Toronto’s philosophy professor, passed away suddenly while in the midst of a public debate over the merits of hiring Canadians in preference to American and British applicants for faculty positions. As a result, the process of replacing Young turned into a continuation of that argument, becoming quite vociferous and involving the popular press and the Ontario gov- ernment. This article examines the intellectual, political, and personal dynamics at work in the battle over Young’s replacement and its eventual resolution. The outcome would have an impact on both the Canadian intellectual scene and the development of experimental psychology in North America. In 1889 the University of Toronto was looking to hire a new professor of philosophy. The normally straightforward process of making a university appoint- ment, however, rapidly descended into an unseemly public battle involving not just university administrators, but also the highest levels of the Ontario govern- ment, the popular press, and the population of the city at large. The debate was not pitched solely, or even primarily, at the level of intellectual issues, but became intertwined with contentious popular questions of nationalism, religion, and the proper place of science in public education. The impact of the choice ultimately made would reverberate not only through the university and through Canada’s broader educational establishment for decades to come but, because it involved James Mark Baldwin—a man in the process of becoming one of the most prominent figures in the study of the mind—it also rippled through the nascent discipline of experimental psychology, just then gathering steam in the United States of America.

    Major-General (Militia) Sir John Morison Gibson, KCMG, MA, LLD, LLB, KC Grand Master (1892-93 and 1893-94) of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Canada in the Province of Ontario Honorary Grand First Principal (1922) of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch masons of Canada in the Province of Ontario (1842-1929) John Morrison Gibson was born on January 1, 1842, in Toronto Township, Peel County, Upper Canada, the son of William Gibson and Mary Sinclair, who were farmers. His father had emigrated from Glamis, Forfarshire, Scotland, while his mother was born in Nelson Township, Halton County. His father died when he was three years old and the family moved to Haldimand County where he first attended a small rural school. In a short time, they moved to Hamilton and John entered Central School. He did so well here that be was elected head boy of the Hamilton schools. As such he was chosen, in 1858, to assist in the opening of the Hamilton Waterworks at which the Prince of W ales officiated. John turned on the first faucet. On completion of secondary school classes at age 17, he entered the University of Toronto, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in June 1863 as well as winning the Prince of Wales’ Prize together with medals in Classics and Modern Languages and a prize in Oriental Languages. The following year he completed and received a Master’s degree. On graduation, he joined the firm of Burton, Sadler and Bruce to read law. He was called to the Bar in 1867 and then returned to University to study law, graduating in 1869 with an LLB as well as the gold medallist for his year.

    ROYAL AND SELECT MASTERS Compiled by OSBORNE SHEPPARD from Old Records. ROYAL MASTER HE Royal Master is the eighth degree of the Amer­ T ican Rite, and the first of the degrees conferred in a Council of Royal and Select Masters. Its officers are a Thrice Illustrious Grand Master, representing King Solomon; Illustrious Hiram of Tyre, Principal Conductor of the Works, representing Hiram Abiff; Master of the Exchequer, Master of Finances, Captain of the Guards, Conductor of the Council, and Steward. The place of meeting is called the "Council Chamber," and represents the private apartment of King Solomon, in which he is said to have met for consultation with his two colleagues during the construction of the Temple. Candidates who receive this degree are said to be "honored with the degree of Royal Master." Its symbolic colors are black and red­ the former significant of grief, and the latter of martyrdom, and both referring to the chief builder of the Temple. The events recorded in this degree, looking at them from a legendary point of view, must have occurred at the building of the first Temple, and during that brief period of time after the death of the builder which is embraced between the discovery of his body and its "Masonic interment." In all the initiations into the mysteries of the ancient world, there was, as it is well known to scholars, a legend of the violent death of some distinguished per­ sonage, to whose memory the particular mystery was consecrated, of the concealment of the body, and of its subsequent discovery.

On June 1, 1866, one thousand heavily-armed Irish-American Fenian insurgents invaded Upper Canada across the Niagara River from Buffalo, NY. The next day near the town of Ridgeway, 800 Fenians battled with 850 Canadian volunteer soldiers, including a small company of 28 University of Toronto students who ended up taking the brunt of the attack. The Battle of Ridgeway (or Lime Ridge or Limestone Ridge) ended with a disastrous rout of the Canadians who in their panicked retreat left their dead and wounded on the field. It was the last major incursion into Canada, the last battle in Ontario and the first modern one fought by Canadians, led in the field exclusively by Canadian officers, and significantly fought in Canada. The Fenian Raid mobilized some 22,000 volunteer troops and resulted in the suspension of habeas corpus in the colonial Province of Canada by its Attorney General and Minister of Militia John A. Macdonald, but the battle which climaxed this crisis is only prominent by its obscurity in Canadian historiography. Almost everything known and cited about Ridgeway springs from the same sources—four books and pamphlets—three of them published in the summer of 1866 immediately after the event and the remaining one in 1910.
