Students in Year 11 are currently predicted to exceed Fischer Family Trust D estimates for all key indicators. With 5A*-C including English and Maths the last Y11 tracking was slightly below our highly ambitious (top 5% of similar schools) target of 74% but the final preparation of our Year 11 students was excellent, so we expect a really good result.

The performance of Year 10 is also very good and continues to exceed Fischer Family Trust D estimates for all key indicators. Now Year 11 have completed their exams, we are identifying which students in Y10 need additional help at subject and school level.

We have established a full data dashboard for the use of the Quality & Curriculum committee of which the tables above are a part.

2.2 Results of recent examinations

There are no recent examination results to report.

3.3 Commentary

With two weeks to go in the Summer term, the number of exclusions is fewer than in the Spring term of both of the last two years. Over the previous twelve months we have had 40 exclusions (56 in the twelve months before that). Expressed as a percentage of the numbers on roll, this is 4.4% and much lower than the most recent national average available of 8.0% in 2011-12. The School & Community Committee scrutinises exclusions in more detail.

3.4 General Behaviour

Each two weeks we update our records of more minor misbehaviour including negative comments, detentions and seclusions. These show a marked reduction compared to last year. Our new system was introduced in the second half of the summer term of 2013 and current minor misbehaviour has remained lower since then. More detailed records are available for further inspection by the School & Community Committee.

7 Complaints and Community Relations Action?

We received complaints from students and parents about the way a member of staff addressed students and about their quality of teaching. This has been resolved to the satisfaction of the complainants.

We have recently hosted several visits by Y5 students to study Science in our laboratories. I am grateful to Mr Mallen who has run these visits with the help of our technicians Mr Glover and Miss Crook.

Coming up are our well-established Y5 French Café days where Y5 students from local primary schools come to learn French and build a Café in a day, finishing with selling typical French food and drink to other students and parents. It is always an enjoyable day for the primary pupils and their teachers.

We have had several visits out of school involving our community including a visit to the Racecourse where we had a tour of the building works and several of our students learnt about the careers on offer in construction. Mrs Ainsworth also took a team of 4 KS3 Maths students to compete in the UK Maths Team Challenge at the Mount School in April. In May, Mrs Arnold took a group of KS3 students to St Olave’s School to hear a talk by author Patrick Ness.

Our language visits continue to be a real strength of the school’s provision. In May, Miss Bell took 10 KS3 students to Germany as part of our German exchange and in June, Mrs McNulty took 64 students on our annual French trip. We also hosted a visit by our partner school Oken Gymnasium last week. There have also been day visits to the university for our most able in KS3 Languages (Mr Hughes) and a trip to where our Y8 pupils helped our primary pupils to develop their basic French vocabulary inspired by the Grand Depart event (thank you Mrs McNulty). I am very grateful to all of the staff who helped on these visits as they could not take place without the goodwill of staff.

We have many trips and events planned during our last two weeks, and many of them are part of Activities Week, our final week. During this time, about half of Y9 students go to Carlton Lodge for outdoor and adventure activities and the rest of Y9 have a variety of activities of a more practical nature than the usual timetable. We also run an International Day and a Charity Day for Years 7 & 8. Staff once again, give very generously of their time to make these exciting days for our students and I would like to record my thanks for their hard work.

8 School Events before the next meeting Action?

Unison/GMB/Unite/NUT Strike Action – Thursday 10 July We have 15 members of Unison and 21 members of NUT in school. I am meeting the Chair of Governors on Friday 4 July to make a final decision about our response. The key concern is if I can guarantee the safety of students in the event of an emergency during the day.

9 General comments Action?

This has been a good year for Millthorpe School. I have received many positive comments from parents, residents and staff about our students’ behaviour and the improvements evident in the school.

While I am very proud of this, I am also very conscious that it has only been possible with the unstinting hard work and dedication of the staff of the school, and I would like to make sure Governors are fully aware of this.

I would also like to record my thanks for the full support our Governing Body have given the school over the last twelve months, and for the support the Chair has afforded me also.
