(LYRCD 6013) MISSA SOLEMNIS & Egmont Overture Ludwig van Beethoven AMA DEUS ENSEMBLE Valentin Radu, Artistic Director and Conductor Sarah Davis, Soprano Jody Kidwell, Mezzo-Soprano Timothy Bentch, Tenor Ed Bara, Bass PROGRAM NOTES: EGMONT, OP. 84, is a set of incidental music pieces for the 1787 play of the same name by Goethe. It consists of an overture and nine separate subsequent pieces for soprano and full orchestra. Beethoven wrote it between October 1809 and June 1810, and it was premiered on 15 June 1810. The overture, powerful and expressive, is one of the last works of his middle period; it has become as famous a composition as the Coriolan Overture, and is in a similar style to the Fifth Symphony which he completed two years earlier. When in 1809 the Burgtheater of Vienna asked Beethoven, a great admirer of Goethe, to compose incidental music for a revival of the play, he accepted with enthusiasm. It recalled themes close to his own political preoccupations, already expressed in his opera Leonore (renamed Fidelio, in the definitive 1814 version) and in his overture Coriolan (in 1807). 1 MISSA SOLEMNIS, OP. 123 “The Missa Solemnis is the greatest work I have composed so far.” Even allowing for the facts that Beethoven was telling this to a publisher and that in1822 he had not yet composed the Ninth Symphony and the last string quartets, his declaration must be taken seriously nevertheless. The Mass is Beethoven’s largest and longest composition (not counting the opera Fidelio), and yet at times also one of his most intimate and personal. -

Jose Rizal by: Marilou Diaz Abaya Film Review First, this movie is rated SPG. There are graphic depictions of violence and even torture. The opening few scenes depict some episodes from Rizal's novels. In one a Catholic priest rapes a Filipina. I guess I now know where the Mestizo (i.e., mixed blood) class came from in the Philippines. In the other scene a Catholic priest beats a child for alleged stealing. Strong thing, and it made me wonder how the Catholic Church could possibly retain any power in the country, if this is what the national hero thought about it. The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. It covers his life from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish forces occupying the Philippines in the late 19th century. We are also thrown into the world of Rizal's novels (filmed in black and white), so we get a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under the Spanish heal. The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and unequal treatment of Filipino students in the schools, this film is a flashing indictment of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. We see scenes both from Rizal's actual life but also from his imagination The movie focuses on the condition of the society and also to the government at the time of the Spanish Colonization. -

Questioning the Status of Rizal's Women in Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo Paulette M. Coulter University of Guam Abstract To an arguable extent, the novels of José Maria Rizal are European novels of the Belle Epoque, despite their setting., and, as such, they reflect the attitude toward women current in Europe in that era. In his novels Rizal’s female characters appear more as stereotypes than archetypes in several broad categories: the good mother (Narcisa), the virgin (Maria Clara, Juli, possibly Paulita Gomez), the harridan (the commandant's wife), the social or religious fanatic (Doña Victorina and Doña Patroncino), for example. In nearly every case in the novels and in his "Letter to the Women of Malolos," however, the individual woman is an exaggeration of an already exaggerated conception of womanhood, with its origins in the work of the Spanish friars. To an arguable extent, the novels of José Maria Rizal are European novels of the Belle Epoque, the golden age at the end of nineteenth century in Europe although their setting is the Philippines, and, as a result, they reflect the attitude toward women current in Europe in that era. Rizal was influenced by both the French novelists Alexandre Dumas, père, and Émile Zola as well as by the European high culture of his time, and his novels rank with theirs in terms of the large numbers of characters, detailed descriptions of the minutiae of everyday life, and complexity of interrelationships of characters in carrying out the plot. Rizal's novels also reflect the ideas of his times on the status and development of women. -

Led by Founding Artistic Director Anne Marie Ketchum, the Verdi Chorus is the only choral group in Southern California that focuses primarily on the dramatic and diverse music for opera chorus. This program, which Ketchum humorously calls the Rom-Com of opera, will feature selections from two Verdi operas I vespri siciliani and Ernani, three Donizetti operas - Don Pasquale, La fille du r giment and L'elisir d'amore, as well as operatic sequences from Bizet's Les p cheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers), Delibes' Lakm , and Puccini's La rondine. The program will feature four guest soloists: critically acclaimed Los Angeles Opera favorite Jamie Chamberlin, praised for her shimmering tones and star-struck vulnerability by Opera News; her equally acclaimed husband, tenor Nathan Granner, one of the original The American Tenors (Sony Classical), and known for his vibrant and flexible voice (The Boston Globe) and for possessing utter control of a ravishing mixed head sound (Opera News), celebrated mezzo soprano Danielle Marcelle Bond, who was hailed by the Los Angeles Times with a Brava! for her performance in Long Beach Opera's production of John Adams' Death of Klinghoffer ; and renowned baritone Roberto Perlas G mez who, with over 100 roles to his credit, has performed extensively throughout the United States. -

Allegro assai: Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium (from Schiller’s Ode to Joy) PROGRAM NOTE The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 “Choral” is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824, the Ninth Symphony is one of the best-known works of the Western repertoire, considered both an icon and a forefather of Romantic music, and one of Beethoven’s greatest masterpieces. The 1 composer struggled for more than ten years before completing the work, and turned to the mighty Missa Solemnis while he considered his final symphony. Using voices in an orchestral symphony had never been attempted before. Beethoven finally decided to incorporate part of the Ode an die Freude (“Ode to Joy”), a poem by Friedrich Schiller, with text sung by soloists and a chorus in the new symphony’s last movement. It is, indeed, the first example of a major composer using the human voice on the same level with instruments in a symphony, creating a work of a grand scope that sets the tone for the Romantic symphonic form. VoxAmaDeus Valentin Radu, Artistic Director & Conductor Concert Season XXV Silver Anniversary 2011-2012 Ama Deus Ensemble Vox Renaissance Consort Camerata Ama Deus Camerata Consort from the Maestro by Valentin Radu, Artistic Director and Conductor Highlights of Silver Anniversary Concert Season XXV Anniversaries have always been both happy and emotional for me. And quite obviously, VoxAmaDeus turning 25 will be major for both categories! It has been an amazing journey – from that frosty December 5, 1987, at Daylesford Abbey, when 12 singers draped in rented Renaissance costumes made their debut performance under my baton – to the 100+ choristers, soloists and orchestra performing Fauré, Stravinsky & Gershwin at the Kimmel Center last Good Friday, April 22, 2011, as part of PIFA (Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts). Not to mention that the first concert season (’87-’88) consisted of three performances, all at Daylesford Abbey and all by one group (Vox Renaissance Consort), while next season will have 23 performances by four Vox groups (Vox Renaissance Consort, Ama Deus Ensemble, Camerata Ama Deus, plus the newest one, Camerata Consort) and “yours truly” on the keys! To start the season, we return to the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul and St. John Vianney Church (Angelus with Vox Renaissance Consort). Next, on October 14, the first of five magnificent concerts at the Kimmel Center roars off the runway with an all-Mozart program, including “yours truly” on the Steinway keys and baton, and Mozart’s final Requiem. In
