One of the many highlights was having our work recognized in a full page article in the Toronto Star! We also had our work recognized nationally on the Social media and on screens in branches of TD Bank! For 24 years now we have provided mentoring, educational, networking and performance opportunities to young women of all Cultures which they can use as a springboard in their careers. We also connect emerging female talent with the people and companies that can help to turn their musical ambitions into reality. In the pages to follow we’ll take you through visuals from the 2019 Season including the auditions, launch, workshops, concert and artist performance & development opportunities along with lots of great news on the accomplishments of our alumni. 2010 2010 Auditions – we were so blown away by the talent! 2010 Our “Meet the Producers” event featured a conversation with Producers NovaWAV followed by a mentor café where budding producers were able to have to have one on one conversations with established producers 2010 NovaWav Talk feedback •. I was freaking out the entire time! I actually still can’t believe we had the chance to meet the incredible duo that brought us hits like In My Head - Ariana Grande, CRZY - Kehlani, Kelly - Kelly Rowland, and the incredible album Everything Is Love - The Carters (and that’s just to name a FEW of their collaborations). To meet the women behind the music that has empowered me in so many ways, has made me feel fearless running on the treadmill, dancing with my friends, and sitting on long bus rides home… it was a very special night to say the least. These women were the ‘real deal’ in regards to being confident in their craft yet exuding authenticity, sincerity, and humility as they stayed to chat with us afterwards… seriously blown away by Nova Wav. • I ended up really shifting some of my perspectives in regards to my songwriting and music career as a whole. I always appreciate a realistic journey and they spoke on the sacrifices they had to make to get to where they are now. I found it remarkable that they still don’t have a manager, and it was incredibly eye opening to realize that we’re all much more capable than we think we are, the importance of being your own boss, but also finding motivation from within yourself. If Nova Wav can self-manage, so can all of us. • The most impactful part for me was Nova2010 Wav sharing their story of hard work and perseverance for ten years in the business because I can definitley relate, not only the time I have put into my own career, but also moving across the country for it. • Nova Wav are such inspiring individuals and I felt honoured to witness them speak guidance onto us as young upcoming artists. When they were talking about the hustle it took to get them where they are (and working with who they're working with), it resonated with me because it is proof that hard work does actually pay off. (Living in their cars, etc. Producers Mentor Café Feedback • This was probably my favourite event so far. I think it is so crucial for young artists to learn to produce for themselves, along with having mentors along the way. It was also so valuable to see successful female producers, as I have become my own producer now and I feel if I was exposed to female producers at a younger age I believe I would have been producing for myself a long time ago. •The Producer Mentor Cafe was EXTREMELY helpful in giving me insight on how to produce my own tracks and what to look out for when creating my own sound. it allowed one-on-one interaction with knowledgeable producers. I made some great contacts and had inspiring conversations. • I spoke to a lot of the producers there and I learned that its best for me to teach my self how to produce and write and not just sing a song and know about the business so no one takes advantage of you. The event was great I learned so much and was very inspired by everyone there. It makes me very excited to see where all this knowledge takes me. Thank you to Honey Jam for giving me this opportunity to meet and learn so much from everyone. • Really enjoyed the producer mentor cafe and found it extremely helpful. It was my favourite part. It let me ask my questions and gain contacts. • I learned a lot in general about the nuances2010 between producing and songwriting, and it’s pretty cool to walk away from an event realizing you’ve been a producer this whole time. Specifically talking about studio production (beat making/engineering), I learned more about the industry standard for what software producers use, where to find samples and sounds, and the importance of finding the right sound for a song. • The line up of producers for the "speed dating" was great I just wished I had a chance to speak with more of them. Overall a great experience and I got a chance to meet and network with many people :) JUNOS Info Session – the artists learned all about the submission process, categories, judging process, etc. 2010 Launch hosted by TD f. Artist Interview with Grammy Award Winner Elle Varner. The 2019 artists were announced and performed for Elle! 2010 Elle Varner Interview Feedback •There were some really cool and refreshing moments in the artist interview with Elle Varner. As an emerging artist I found it extremely insightful and realistic to hear about life after a major label and the success you can still reach running your own music career as a label owner. I also appreciated her perspective on navigating spirituality, femininity, and balance in the highly demanding and often male-centered field of music. I found her concept of ‘setting the tone when you walk into a room’ really applicable and something I want to pay more attention to - especially as an emerging artist it can be easy to find yourself feeling intimidated and overly compromising. I also took note of her comment on the importance of studying ‘the greats’, and in learning from them, building your own individual artistry. My last little note was on how she expressed that doing your purpose will inspire others… up close and from a distance. I just love that. • I particularly resonated with her desire to be true to herself and to not be boxed into one specific genre or idea based off of her appearance. Her approach to the topic of 'be yourself' was very relatable as she discussed the inner dialogue of not compromising your values but also approaching the industry side of music as a product/business relationship. It’s a topic I personally want to continue unpacking, particularly in strengthening my artistic vision and quite honestly being okay with not ‘fitting the mold’. •Hearing that she owns her own masters was such a moment! As I’ve learned more and more about the music industry, I’ve come to recognize that owning your own masters is a big deal and something to truly celebrate! • I was reminded that it's more than ok to take time to decipher what you want in comparison to what is commonly portrayed. It was very informative as well as eye opening, as it gave me a lot of perspective as to what it means to traverse through the industry. My biggest takeaway was learning to set the tone from the start and being very clear as to what it is you will and will not tolerate in terms of working within the business most2010 especially when working with men. Hearing Elle talk really made me reflect on the fact that I could avoid a lot of trouble and misunderstandings simply by demanding respect and walking away from situations that could actively jeopardize that! Her advice in that respect is definitely something I will be applying to my artist life as well as my personal life! • I think the parts that resonated with me the most is the act of finding her voice as an artist that is again something I'm still struggling with but I think that as I grow within my personal life as well as my artist life I will be able to have a clearer voice holistically. the humility that Elle possesses. She is quite humble and honest and carried herself with an amazing amount of grace. It was amazing to watch and to be around. I strive to be more like that as I grow and mature within myself both personally and artistically. Workshop - The full day of session at the Harris Institute featured panels on Digital Streaming, Marketing/Branding, Songwriting and Music Rights 2010 Harris Institute Workshop Feedback • . Today's workshop I felt truly compiled all of the topics a young music entrepreneur needs to know in order to lead a successful business in the music industry. Maybe most of those subjects resonated with me strongly this time because I've been exposed to them before. It was very exciting for me to be able to gauge where I am as a business and brand in comparison to a couple of months ago and even years ago. Not only this, but I was also able to gauge what my current obstacles are and what I need to do to overcome those challenges in order to move my music career forward.
