Si faranno due traduzioni annotate di alcuni saggi che fanno parte di un catalogo museale, composto in occasione della mostra intitolata L’eta della conquista. Il fascino dell’arte greca a Roma. Questa mostra era la prima di un progetto quinquennale tenutosi nei musei capitolini, I giorni di Roma, con cui si sono offerte cinque mostre annuali, a partire dal 2010. Il primo saggio, scritto da Claudio Parisi Presicce, ha come titolo L’ascesa di Roma nei paesi di cultura ellenica. Dalla conquista del Mediterraneo alla costruzione dell’immagine del Romano. Il secondo, scritto da Eugenio La Rocca, è intitolato La maestà degli dèi come apparizione teatrale. Le traduzioni prodotte potrebbero essere interessanti sia per il pubblico olandese in generale, sia per gli esperti, o studenti di storia dell’arte/archeologia che vorrebbero approfondire le loro conoscenze dell’arte romana e preferiscono farlo con l’aiuto di testi nella loro lingua madre. Lo scopo della tesi è trovare una strategia traduttiva adatta a testi storico-artistici, in questo caso dei saggi, che porta a delle traduzioni di lettura abbastanza semplice, come erano anche intesi i saggi originali. Questa tesi è composta di due parti. La prima parte (contestuale e teorica) sta in funzione alla seconda parte (pratica), la traduzione dei due saggi, scelti in modo casuale. Innanzitutto si farà, nel primo capitolo della prima parte, una contestualizzazione della traduzione: vengono introdotti i Musei Capitolini, i saggisti ed il saggio. Nel secondo capitolo sarà descritta la teoria traduttiva di base, basato sull’approccio funzionale di Nord1 (skopos), in relazione al lavoro di Toury e Holmes2 (target-oriented vs. source-oriented). Successivamente, si farà un’analisi dei testi da tradurre per rilevarne gli elementi rilevanti per la traduzione, basata sul modello di analisi rilevante per la traduzione di Hönig.3 Oltre ai problemi-traduttivi ‘in generale’ che si incontreranno durante il processo della traduzione, ad esempio le differenze specifiche della combinazione di lingue italiana e olandese, ci sarà un’attenzione particolare ai realia e di nomi propri di persona e di cosa, degli elementi traduttivi di cui – probabilmente – si troveranno molto esempi in un testo sulla cultura antica di duemila anni fa. Partendo dalle teorie sui 1 Nord. 2 Toury, 1980 e 1995, Holmes. 3 Hönig. 4 realia di Osimo, Vlahov e Florin, e Grit4, verrà chiarito cosa sono i realia, ne sarà fatta una categorizzazione e verranno descritti i numerosi modi in cui possono essere tradotti. Descrivendo pure la materia dei nomi propri trattata da Osimo, dovrebbe risultare una strategia traduttiva che porterà a testi comprensibili, informativi e istruttivi per il lettore olandese, che si troveranno nella seconda parte della tesi. Nelle conclusioni seguiranno le esperienze acquisite durante il processo della traduzione. 4 Osimo, 2014 e 2019, Vlahov e Florin e Grit. 5 PARTE PRIMA 6 1. Il contesto delle traduzioni 1.1. I Musei Capitolini5 La formazione delle collezioni dei Musei Capitolini dev’essere considerata nel quadro di un interesse più ampio nel patrimonio archeologico dell’antica Roma nel XV secolo, non ispirata da un motivo di riuso dei materiali, ma da un interesse antiquario e collezionistico. Nel 1471, papa Sisto IV donò al popolo romano quattro statue in bronzo – la Lupa, lo Spinario, il Camillo, la testa bronzea di Costantino con la mano e il globo6 – che erano collocate davanti al Patriarchio lateranense dove erano il simbolo di continuità tra la Roma imperiale e il potere temporale della Chiesa. Con questo atto, il papa non volle fare semplicemente una donazione, ma una vera ‘restituzione’ “al popolo romano delle opere scultoree, che erano testimonianza dell’antica grandezza dello stesso popolo romano dal quale erano state create.”7 Inoltre, con quel dono, Sisto IV volle sottolineare la preponderanza del potere pontifico sul Campidoglio, contrapponendosi al ruolo di centro propulsore dell’autonomia civica, sostenuto dalla magistratura capitolina. Con questa nuova concentrazione di antiche opere scultoree sul Campidoglio, il complesso museale Capitolino nacque in un posto dove, dopo la caduta dell’impero romano, erano spariti nei secoli seguenti di devastazione e di abbandono i templi, gli archi onorari e le statue. Nei periodi seguenti i successivi papi aggiunsero altre opere provenienti dagli scavi di Roma, dal Vaticano o acquistate intenzionalmente per le collezioni del museo e

    THE PHOKIKON AND THE HERO ARCHEGETES (PLATE54) A SHORT DISTANCE WEST of the Boiotian town of Chaironeia the Sacred Way I Lcrossed the border into Phokis. The road went past Panopeus and on toward Daulis before turning south toward the Schiste Odos and, eventually, Delphi (Fig. 1). To reach the famous crossroads where Oidipos slew his father, the Sacred Way first had to pass through the valley of the Platanias River. In this valley, on the left side of the road, was the federal meeting place of the Phokians, the Phokikon.1 This is one of the few civic buildings from antiquity whose internal layout is described by an eyewitness.2 Pausanias says, Withrespect to size the buildingis a largeone, and withinit thereare columnsstanding along its length; steps ascend from the columnsto each wall, and on these steps the delegatesof the Phokianssit. At the far end there are neithercolumns nor steps, but a statuegroup of Zeus, Athena, and Hera; the statueof Zeus is enthroned,flanked by the goddesses,with the statueof Athenastanding on the left (1O.5.2).3 Frazersuggested that the interior of the building resembledthe Thersilion at Megalopolis.4 The location of a federal assembly hall so close to the border with Boiotia, an often hostile neighbor, seems puzzling, but given the shape of the entire territory of Phokis, the position of the Phokikonmakes sense (Fig. 2).     Temple Reuse in Late Antique Greece Stefan Moffat Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Classics Supervisor: Dr. Geoffrey Greatrex Department of Classics and Religious Studies Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa July 2017 © Stefan Moffat, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 Abstract The subject of this thesis is the variety of ways that temples were reused by Romans, both Christian and non-Christian, at the end of Antiquity in the present-day country of Greece. It discusses these means of reuse using principally archaeological evidence as a means of countering interpretations of the material culture that temples were either destroyed or reused as churches. These interpretations are based on the assumption that contemporary written sources such as Saints’ ‘Lives’ (the literary genre known as hagiography) are an accurate portrayal of temple reuse in Late Antiquity, without taking into consideration the legendary nature of hagiography. On the other hand, they do not account for potentially contradictory evidence of temple reuse derived from archaeological excavation. It is argued in this thesis that archaeological evidence provides an alternative outcome to that described in contemporary written sources such as hagiography, one that emphasizes practical forms of temple reuse rather than religious. The evidence for this argument is presented at both a geographic level and as discreet categories of forms of reuse of both a religious and practical nature, as a first glimpse of the nuanced image of temple reuse in Greece. Specific examples of the evidence are then cited in a number of case studies to be further developed as a valid attribute in the characterisation of the Late Antique sacred landscape at the level of the Roman Empire.

My ship is put up in a field away from the city, in the harbor Rheithron, under woody Neion.” —Homer, Odyssey 1.179–85 In Homer, space and time come together to create imaginary places, many of which are nevertheless rooted in real locations, experiences, and cultural memory. By referring to far-flung peoples and locales, and by stitching them together in the course of a narrative, Homer illustrates a highly connected Mediterranean world—or at least one that is acutely aware of its own diversity. In the passage above, Athena, speaking to Telemachos on Ithaca, poses as Mentes, who hails from the nearby island of Taphos. She also refers to Temesa, which scholars usu- ally locate in southwestern Italy, as a destination both familiar and foreign, and of interest for the metals trade (Papadopoulos 2001, 447).1 We are presented with information about the local topography, which “Mentes” knows. We are made aware of commodities, of strange languages, of short anchorages in unfamiliar places.
