To be continued DEATH TAKES A SPORTS PHILATELIST by Joe Schirmer Sometime ago, thru SPI member Cliff Jager and correspondence,! made the aoqualntenance of Vaclav Busek who wrote the fine book of Olympic franks and cancellations entitled "Olympijske Frankotype Olympoafrelstempel". His text on the subject matter was good and it showed a love for sports philately and writing of his favorite subject. Recently I wrote to Busek to thank him for a copy of his book and much to my surprise and also deep sorrow, I received a note In the form of a death announcement explaining that he had died recently af ter a long illness, and surprisingly enough, Busek was a priest. If any SPI members have access to this fine sports work, you are lucky as much can be learned from It. Philately has lost another fine student.

LETS POOL OUR OLYMPIC .AND SPORTS KNOWLEDGE Edited by Edward B. Epstein Sports and Olympic philatelists have, collectively, a great deal of knowledge which, when pooled, can be of mutual benefit. Questions concerning sports and Olympic philately will be assigned a number and published In JSP. Responses to questions will be printed in subse quent Issues. Address all questions and answers to your editor; Ed ward B. Epstein, Paterson Board of Education, 33 Church St., Paterson, NJ 07505. Please cite your source of information.

Q-29 I have In my collection a flown cover from Monterrey, Mexico with the Olympic machine slogan "Use and Collect Olympic Postage Stamps." On the date stamp "Monterrey, N.L./Correos/ 27 Apr. HOWEVER THE YEAR NUMERALS ARE INVERTED -869I Instead of 1968. Can anyone explain how this Inversion occurred? Has anyone else seen It? Is it rare? Por how long a period of time was this year numeral inversion in use? I would appreciate any Information about it. A-26 The response to the question about "Japanese Mihon Overprints" has been very gratifying. Many thanks to Joe Schirmer, Dave Bressler, Joachim B. Kortuem and Atsushi Sekimoto (Japan) for providing the following Information which was gathered from the Meikan Catalog (Japan Special), the American Philatelist (Vol 79 No. 6, March I966) and Japanese Philately (Vol. 25: No. 3. June 1970.) The word "Mihon" is Japanese (originally compounded from the two Chinese characters) "MI" ("to see") and "HON" ("source or origin) Compounded the word "Mihon" means "Sample" or "Specimen". The purpose of the "Mihon" is to announce the issuance of a stamp. These specimens were to acquaint post office personnel, both at home and abroad, with new stamps about to be put into circula tion. "Mihon" specimens are forwarded to the U.P.U. The over prints negate the postal validity. In 1958 the Postal Communi cations and Telegraph Service endeavored to promote stamp collec ting as part of the general education program in Japan. This "school campaign", launched by the Ministry, was a success and 7 for the rise of Mihon overprints from 16,300 In 1957 to 61,500 in 1958. Special thanks to A. Sekimoto who provided the following numbers of "Mihon" for Japan's sports and Olympic issues: NATIONAL ATHLETIC MEETS: No. of No. of Scott No. Meet Year Values overprints Color 397_*K)0 2nd. 1947 4 v. 300 black 417 3rd. 1948 1 v. 1.-500 red 418-21 3rd. 1948 4 v. 1.500 red 444-45 4th. 1949 2 v. 1.500 red 469-73 4th. 1949 4 v. 1.500 red 505-08 5th. 1950 4 v. 15.000 black 549-50 6th. 1951 2 v. 15.500 red 567-68 7th. 1952 2 v. 15.900 red 589-90 8th. 1953 2 v. 16,000 red 602-03 9th. 1954 2 v. 16,200 red 614-15 10th. 1955 2 v. 16,300 black 628-29 11th. 1956 2 v. 16,300 vermilion 639-40 12th. 1957 2 v. 16,300 black 657-58 13th. 1958 2 v. 61,500 black 682-83 14th. 1959 2 v. 66,700 red 705-06 15th. We next take up the question of the colors used for the over prints. The Japanese Gov't. Printing Bureau decided on the color of the overprints. This decision is based on the stamp's color. If the color of the stamp Is dark, the color red is usually used for the let tering "Mihon". Blaok is used for light colored stamps. Finally, there is the question of the so-called "Mihon" forgeries on the six souvenir sheets Issued on Aug. 20, 1964 for the Tokyo Games, Opinions differ about their authenticity. Many of the characters are uneven is size and spacing. The easiest way of detecting the "Mihon" varieties are by measuring the three "Minon" characters. Width: 14.5 mm (standard) — — 10.5 mm (variety) Height: 3.5 mm (standard) — — 2.5 to 3.2 mm (variety) A. Seklmoto of Japan writes about these varieties, "I investiga ted them very carefully and found that they are all genuine specimens. I asked a man who was a government official of the postal service, why are there so many varieties of lettering "Mihon" of the Tokyo Olympic Fund S/S's, he answered that at the time. Government Printing Bureau was very busy so that the overprint work was sublet to some private printing factories." A detailed account of the examination of these varieties is re ported in Japanese Philately, Vol. 25: No. 3 June 1970 pgs. 112-114. J. R. Hughes and Mr. Montgomery claim they are forgeries. Then again Atsu8hl Seklmoto's explalnatlon is quite plausible...,tak« your pick! LIGHTING OF THE OLYMPIC TORCH AT OLYMPIA by P. J. Drossos The ceremony took place at noon on January 30, 1976. The Torch was then carried by runners to the village of Platanos, on to Andravida Aerodrome and flown to the Athens airport. There, on the same after noon, the Torch in solemn ceremony was handed to representatives of the Austrian Olympic Committee, who at once boarded their plane and flew to Vienna. The Greek Posts had three special prepared for mall posted during these ceremonies, which were only used on the 30th Jan. One at Olympla, and at Athens, one for the "handing jover" to the Aus trlans and the third for the Torch bearing flight Athens-Vienna. The Three types of postmarks are the same. BOX 448, MONROE, NEW YORK 10950 POISON GAS A OLYMPIC STAMPS by Joseph B. Schirmer Over the years there have been three governments In Yemen; namely; Yemen; Mutawakelute Kingdom of Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic. With three governments operating simultaneously, one oan well Imagine the confusion caused In various government agencies and especially the postal division. While all three governments Issued stamps by the 23 basket full, It took the Mutawakellte Kingdom of Yemen to pull off one of the classic rlpoffs to collectors. On 26 June 1967 they issued five overprinted Olympic stamps; two from the Tokyo and three from the Mexico Olympic Preparation Issue. They were overprinted with new values along with a skull and cross bones. A 50/£ surtax on the sale of these stamps was imposed, provided you had a letter of authorization to purchase same. Approximately 12,500 sets were Issued for "sale". They were supposedly issued to help pay medical expenses for persons hit with poison gas during the many "wars" and skirmishes going on in Yemen. The overprints are as follows: 2B Tokyo Gold Medal Winners overprinted skull plus IB 6B • " " " m " " 3B 12B Mexico Preparation Olympics " • " 6B 28B " " " " • " 14B (plus 2 plus 12) 34B • " " " " " 17B (plus 12 Plus 57) Varieties: Type I no plus mark Type II plus mark There exists the usual double overprints, part of overprints etc. The writer has positive knowledge that through a dealer In Yemen who cooperated closely with three officials of the Yemen government, the entire issue was purchased by two British dealers. (The writer has the names of the dealers and officials.) We would like to hear from any members who can add any further information to this story. All names will be held in confidence.
