~-- -- -~- ~~~~~~-< 'GOALS OF THE NOW NATIONAL TASK FORCE ON SPORTS 197J-74 Establi$hment of chapter sports committees Development of nationwide communication and cooperation Enforcement of Title IX of the Educational Amendment Act 1972 r Redefining recreation and sports for all people - emphasis on health, enjoyment, and physical fitness Equal access to and full participation in all public recreational facilities {this would deny Little League and other discriminatory private organizations the use of public parks, etc. for their activities unless girls and women were allowed to participate). This might be partially accomplished by the enforcement of public accommodation laws or the passage of city ordinances relatlnc to the use of public facilities. Elimination of discrimination in school and college physical education, athletic and recreation programs

Develop~ent of a positive·1mage of women in sports Unbiased media coverage of women in sports - i.e. evening sports reports, specials, Olympic coverage, tournaments, women as spor~scasters and sportswriters Equal emuloyment and promotional opportunities for women in sports and media Public interest and support for women's sports development Encouragement, collection and dissemination of research on women and sports. Development of a humanistic approach to sports for all people - developing full human potential rather than a few culturally stereotyped supermascul1ne, superstars Support for the efforts of professional women athletes to receive equal billing and prize money Collection and dissemination of data regarding existing state laws and legal challenges currently underway Establish cooperation with and encourage the involvement of . various physical education, athletic and recreation associations Nhich may or may not be aware of and in agreement with our resolutions and goals initially Encourage local chapters to develop or facilitate development ~f sports programs in which girls and women can participate Encourage and support efforts to strengthen coaching and administrative training programs for women 1n sports RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MEDIA SPORTS COVERAGE FOR WOMEN Submitted by Lee Arthur Each radio and television station in the country should be contacted with the following requests:

1. To cover women's and girls' sports events with the same serious intention afforded the men. 2. To use women in the coverage of women's events. The few women who have been used have been athletes like tennis star Ann Hayden Jones or Olympic Gold medalist Peggy Fleming. 3. To give women's sports news along with men's sports news. The traditional "ord~r of importance" allows only the so-called "important sports news" to be given in the average sports telecast. This generally precludes any items about women athletes. 4. To provide indepth programs about women in sports; the young athletes competing in previously all-male sports, women athletes who have made contributions to their sport, and women in the sports media. 5. Help change the traditional no-access rules which prevent women from gaining access to "male only" areas. The press boxes, football fields, dugouts, ringsides, and the pit areas at race tracks are off-limits to women. Women are also not allowed to attend social functions like the Annual Baseball Writers' Assn. Dinner in New York. 6. Encourage commercial sponsors to participate in women's sports. Most large .:ompanies see the value of sponsoring pro-men's sports but fail to see the :;arne potential in women's sports.

7. Support sp~rtscasters who aren't tied to the traditional sports jargon that confuses rather than clarifies the action. Using terms like, "the puck is uff the wall/' is banned in describing hockey action. You're suppo,:;ed to say, "the puck is off the boards." But many people don't all<.ay.s understand the inside terms or what the sportscasters are talking about.

B. Acknowled& ~ the women sport.> st;J.rs of today. Most people can name the top male athletes but very few can name the top female athletes. We must realize that only when women consider the female athlete worthy of attention will the rest of the sports world take notice. 9. Support and encourage coaches developing female athletes. One such coach is Fred Thompson. who took a leave of absence from his job last year to devote full time to his female team. The Atoms Track Club of Bedford-Stuy vesant, in Brooklyn, trained under his supervision for the Olympics. 10. Work to eliminate the image of sportswomen being less attractive because of healthy physical development. It should be acceptable for women to compete in sports without losing their identities as women.
