Hunter College Social Sciences Lab, W607 Student Printing Instructions NOTE: NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE LAB Turning on and logging into the computer · If a lab assistant is available, please ask him or her to do it for you. · If a lab assistant is not available, follow these steps: 1. Turn on monitor (silver button at front) 2. Turn on computer (black button at front) 3. At the login prompt, hit enter (no password required) Printer options Two types of printer are available in the lab. The printer features are indicated below. Printer Features Printer Name Availability Dot Uses computer paper. Low Matrix quality printing. Good for rough Lexmark 2380 Plus #1 Default printer for odd-numbered drafts. stations (e.g., LabSoc07) Free. Lexmark 2380 Plus #2 Default printer for even-numbered stations (e.g., LabSoc08) Laser Uses quality printer paper. High quality single- and double-sided printing. Good for final drafts, graphics and long documents. By donation: 5¢/sheet. Place in HP LJ 4000 Rm 606 - PCL6 Default printer for print station the wooden box next to the (LabSoc01). Can be used by other printer. Instructors and lab stations only during class times. assistants cannot take money or provide change. If you do not have correct change, pay extra or bring it next time. Printer procedures Note: Laser printer donation policy (5¢/sheet) is the same for both in-class and walk-in hours. 1. During walk-in hours Dot matrix printing is available from all computers. Laser printing is available only from the Print Station (LabSoc01). Do not hog the print station! It is for printing only. Do your work at another station, save your document on diskette, and bring it to the Print Station. (If you are laser printing a webpage, write down the URL and enter it at the print station.) 2. During class times Dot matrix and laser printing is enabled on all computers. As indicated above, all computers except LabSoc01 default to dot matrix printing. To select the laser printer choose: File ® Print ® HP LJ 4000 Rm 606 - PCL6 (from the drop-down box in the Name field). Printing only the output you need Save time and money by printing only those sections of output that you need. The procedures for various programs are indicated below. SPSS In the outline (left-hand) panel of the SPSS output window, use the following keys to select only those items you wish to print. Note that each section of the output is divided into subsections (for example, Title, Notes, Pie), which can be selected individually. · Shift + Click: selects multiple consecutive items. · Control + Click: selects multiple non-consecutive items Select File Print Print Range Selection Internet Explorer and Netscape To print a selected portion of the page (Internet Explorer only!): 1. Drag the mouse to Highlight the selection. 2. Choose File Print Print Range Selection To limit the number of pages you print (useful for longer webpages): File Print Print Range Pages from e.g., 1 to 1 To preview your document: File Print Preview To enlarge or reduce the printed webpage (laser printing only): File Print Properties Effects Reduce/Enlarge Other Printing Tips To include your name at the top of each page of your SPSS document: File Page Setup Options. (Type in your desired header, click OK to return to the Page Setup, and click on OK again.) To disable double-sided laser printing: File Print Properties Document Options Uncheck "Print on both Sides" Troubleshooting procedures 1. Check to see if the problem is related to your own computer. o Choose Start (lower left corner of screen) Settings Printers. Double click on the printer to which you are trying to print and select Print Purge Print Documents. Try printing again. o Save your work, restart your computer, and try printing again. (see “Turning on and logging into computer" above) 2. Ask a lab assistant or your professor to see if the problem is related to the printer. Please do not touch the printer controls.
