Arak and Gwydion (Some Thoughts on the Shadow Elves' History) By R. Sweeney Gwydion isn't a 'real' demon, but rather a creature of great power from the plane of shadow. Gwydion's evil was his enslavement of the ShadowElves. His torment is his betrayal by Arak. Unlike Vecna, he was not on the prime and could only be 'trapped' because he was trying to follow the Shadow Elves into RL. (Presumably to kill them or re-enslave them). I wonder what Arak was thinking, however. Would there be anyplace he could take the Shadow elves into exile where Gwydion could not follow? Did he think he could hide from such a powerful creature? Gwydion must have had an enemy. A sibling perhaps. The Shadow Elves must have acted as some sort of armed forces for him. Arak must have believed that if Gwydion suddenly found himself without his Slaves, he would have been destroyed by his rivals. However, there other.. less satisfying, perhaps, ways of re-writing ShadowElf history. Gwydion, the shadow-being, falls 'in love' with an elf from some other world. They mate, bear children. Woman dies, Gwydion takes his children and their children as slaves. Millenia pass. Arak was Gwydion's favorite. Perhaps, Gwydion had mated with one of the Shadow elves of unsurpassed beauty and begat Arak. Thus, he set his son above all the other slaves. Arak, however, desired more than to be the head of the slaves. He managed to betray his father to his enemies. Arak had intended patricide. He was going to take away Gwydion's protective armed forces, leaving him vulnerable to attack by his other enemies. -

Once the small burg had exemplified the best of Arborea, its small homes dotting the lush valley and tall trees towering above to form a canopy of leaves that protected them from the worst of the plane’s weather. Animals and children would run throughout the underbrush, their imaginations presenting them with untold wonders under every rock and behind every bush. Even during the hardest times the MAGIC town’s folk, whether man, woman, or spirit, would gather at night to dance and sing together around blazing fires. The Athar had formed the hamlet as an oasis for those seeking a peaceful home away from the manipulations of the gods and their followers. Their lives weren’t easy, but no day was wasted, each was worth living. That blithe energy had fallen away, however, and the air became choked by bitterness and hatred. The passion which filled their hearts turned to jealousy and rage. What had started as a small feud between lovers had grown to consume the whole village, turning family against family and dividing the town. Now a wall split the valley and its residents, sitting like an open wound across the realm’s face. A necessary evil, as if looking at the ugly gray stone was better than seeing those on the other side. The poison infecting the town had become so intense that now the whole valley was on the verge on shifting to another plane. -

Lee Harrington, Ph.D., Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT ENCOUNTERS AT THE IMAGINAL CROSSROADS: AN EXPLORATION OF THE EXPERIENCES OF WOMEN IN ROLE-PLAYING GAMES By Christopher J. Dyszelski This study was a critical, archetypal, feminist ethnography and psychological inquiry into the experiences of women in tabletop role-playing gaming and its culture. Informed by performance ethnographic practice and the spirit of these games, it is written as an adventurous journey into and encounter with these experiences based on participant observation, interviews with gaming professionals, an online questionnaire of 428 gamers, and series of interviews with female gamers. Ethnographically, this study documents the history and experiences of women in the culture of gaming. It presents profiles of a diversity of female gamers and explores historically the ways that women have established themselves as members of this culture and shaped this traditionally male dominated hobby. It also examines a multiplicity of opinions about and experiences of sexism, prejudice, and discrimination of women in gaming. While demonstrating the progress in the games and their culture to become more inclusive and welcoming to women, it shows there is still far to go. It also demonstrates how despite the possibility and creative potential for gaming and its culture to imagine completely new social worlds, the same power dynamics and social structures are recreated in the games, groups, and culture. -

BYTE-SIZED MIDDLE AGES: TOLKIEN, FILM, AND THE DIGITAL IMAGINATION by Courtney M. Booker “A note on the wall says, ‘Magic word XYZZY.’” —Will Crowther, programmer of Adventure In a letter to the New York Times, Sherry Turkle, Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT and the foun- der (2001) and current director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, observed that the mass appeal of Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings “owes much to the computer culture that made J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy world its own.”1 There is an entire book packed within this statement. Certainly many people—especially those born since the early 1960s—now understand that there is some kind of connection among Tolkien’s fiction, the game of Dungeons and Drag- ons, and computer programming. Yet this connection is usually trivi- alized or ridiculed as nothing but a clear sign of the eccentric, tedious interests that define (male) misanthropes, freaks, and geeks.2 Thus what Turkle’s remark suggests is that to understand the success of the films of Tolkien’s novel is to understand a revenge of the nerds, so to speak. Put another way, part of the reason many enjoy the Lord of the Rings films is because they seem to make sense visually—but this visual sen- sibility is one that was learned, and learned only relatively recently. In the early 1960s many readers of Tolkien’s An earlier version of this paper was delivered on 6 June 2002 as part of the UCLA Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies film lecture series, Los Angeles, California. -
