Ireland’s University of Enterprise. www.dcu.ie WELCOME Welcome to Dublin City University! Our Open Day is packed full of activities to help you find out what DCU has to offer you. There will be a variety of opportunities for you to attend course talks, displays and demonstrations, where our lecturers and current students look forward to meeting and chatting with you. ARRIVING ON CAMPUS To help and assist you, there are two Open Day Information Points. These are located in the foyer of the Research and Engineering Centre and in the Exhibition Area, which is located in “The Hub”. Be sure to look out for our Student Ambassadors and members of staff who will be delighted to help you. We will be wearing blue jackets with the words “Can I help”. SUBJECT TALKS DCU offers honour degree courses in Business, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Health and Computing. At the presentations, you will have the opportunity to meet with academic staff and current stu- dents. Information on all degree courses will be covered in the relevant subject talks. Each presentation will be repeated throughout the day. For example, if you are interested in Accounting and Finance, you will attend the Business course talk at one of the listed times in room QG15 in the Business School. Comprehensive Information about their courses will be provided at the Fiontar stand on an individual basis. ** The Common Entry into Science course will be outlined in the talks given by the Schools of Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biotechnology. Please refer to the campus map on the back page for directions to the talks. DISPLAYS Selected Schools within the Faculty of Science and Health will be doing tours and/or demonstrations in the labs and skills centres. The Faculty of Engineering and Computing will also be conducting a wide range of demonstrations. EXPLORE THE CAMPUS It is important that you get a feel for the DCU campus because it could be your home from home for the next three or four years! Tours of campus will take place at regular intervals throughout the day and highlights include: • Student Accommodation • University Sports Club • The Library • The Hub Student Centre Tours of campus will depart from the ‘Street’ in the Henry Grattan Building at 11.00, 12.00, 13.00 and 14.00 - the tour will take approximately 40 minutes. EXHIBITION AREA The Exhibition Area is located in “The Hub”. It will provide Information Points for you to ask questions or to find out more about DCU. You will have an opportunity to meet representatives from the following areas: • Student Support & Development • Access Service • Careers Service • DCU Business School • Sports Academy • Faculty of Science and Health • Sport Scholarships • Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences • Accommodation • Faculty of Engineering and Computing • Admissions • International Office • Mature Student Information • Disability and Learning Support Service So whether you have a question about what career a DCU degree can direct you towards, sports scholarships, or work placement opportunities, make sure you stop by the Exhibition Area. Also, staff from the faculties will be available in the Exhibition Area to offer individual advice or to answer specific queries about courses. STUDENT LIFE There are over 90 clubs and societies in DCU. Students from various clubs and societies will also be around campus doing demonstrations and giving you the chance to sample student life. Feel free to talk to them about life in DCU. SPORT AT DCU Representatives from Admissions, Sport and Recreation and the Sports Academy will be available to talk to you at the Exhibition Area about our Sports Scholarships Programme and Elite Sportsperson Entry Scheme. GENERAL TALKS ON UNIVERSITY LIFE Going to university means more than just attending courses. Throughout the day, a series of general talks will take place offering information specific to DCU as well as advice about university life in general that will benefit your students wherever they decide to study. The general talks include: Student Survival Guide The talk will be hosted by the Students’ Union and will look at everything you need to know to survive in university. Current students will discuss student life, because going to university means more than just attending classes; it’s also about student life, making new friends and getting involved in sports, clubs & societies. This talk will cover student life, participating in clubs & societies and sports. Student Sport & Elite Sport Opportunities in DCU At DCU we believe in a “Sport for all” philosophy. Why? This session is for applicants with a disability and who might be considering third level education. The session will be facilitated by Ted Harvey, Disability Officer. Why not take the opportunity to get a taste of DCU on this exciting day, view the campus facilities and find out what supports you are entitled to avail of from DCU. SEMINAR FOR GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS – FRIDAY 16 NOVEMBER The Seminar for Guidance Counsellors will take place on Friday 16 November which will provide up to date information about our new courses and other developments.
