Methods: this is an evaluation study of Teresina Cervical Cancer Information System (Siscolo), for the period from 2006 to 2013, based on descriptive statistical analyses. Results: 604,331 pap smear tests of women residents in Teresina were registered on the system; 1.8% presented premalignant or malignant cytological conditions (atypical cells, intraepithelial lesions and cancer); positive results were higher among women aged >64 years old; there was a reduction of 43.9% in the number of tests performed among women in the target age group of the screening program; there was an increment in the percentage of unsatisfactory samples, from 0.33 to 0.89%. Conclusion: Teresina cervical screening program presents some limitations that need to be overcome, especially concerning the insufficient tests offer, its low proportion of positive results and the growing number of unsatisfactory samples. Some studies show that there is a difference in the symptomatic burden for this cancer among young adults and elderly individuals, which can deteriorate the quality of life of these patients. Objective: To investigate the difference in the pattern of symptoms among young adults and elderly patients with colon and rectum cancer. Method: Cross-sectional study using dataset on the prevalence of symptoms among colorectal cancer patients attended at the National Cancer Institute José Alencar Gomes da Silva (INCA) through a recently adapted inventory of symptoms for Brazil. Results: A total of 348 patients were interviewed, of which 101 were young adults (29.1%) and 247 (70.9%) were elderly individuals. There was a difference between the symptoms analyzed for pain (p=0.033), nervousness (p=0.013), drowsiness (p=0.033), sadness (p=0.003), problem with sexual interest or activity (p=0.014), loss of appetite (p= 0.028), irritation (p=0.013), change of food taste (p=0.042), hair loss (p=0.002.) and “I don’t look like myself” (p<0.001). -

The etiologic agent, Borna disease virus (BDV), has been identified as an enveloped nonsegmented negative-strand RNA virus with unique properties of replication. Data indicate a high degree of genetic stability of BDV in its natural host, the horse. Studies in the Lewis rat have shown that BDV replication does not directly influence vital functions; rather, the disease is caused by a virus-induced T-cell–mediated immune reaction. Because antibodies reactive with BDV have been found in the sera of patients with neuro- psychiatric disorders, this review examines the possible link between BDV and such disorders. Seroepidemiologic and cerebrospinal fluid investigations of psychiatric patients suggest a causal role of BDV infection in human psychiatric disorders. In diagnostically unselected psychiatric patients, the distribution of psychiatric disorders was found to be similar in BDV seropositive and seronegative patients. In addition, BDV-seropositive neurologic patients became ill with lymphocytic meningoencephali- tis. In contrast to others, we found no evidence is reported for BDV RNA, BDV antigens, or infectious BDV in peripheral blood cells of psychiatric patients. Postgraduate Veterinary Training in Conservation Medicine: An Interdisciplinary Program at Murdoch University, Australia Kristen Warren School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, Division of Health Sciences, Murdoch University Abstract Although many veterinarians in Australia have been interested in wildlife conservation, the concept of active and worthwhile involvement in biodiversity conservation has often seemed difficult to achieve. There are many boundaries which may hinder the ability of veterinarians to contribute effectively to wildlife conservation initiatives. This article discusses postgraduate veterinary educational initiatives at Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia, which aim to train veterinarians to effectively participate in biodiversity conservation programs. The Master of Veterinary Studies (Conservation Medicine) and the Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Conservation Medicine have a flexible program structure and can be undertaken entirely by distance education. Their establishment required the removal of disciplinary, institutional, cultural, experiential, and professional development boundaries, which have traditionally impeded veterinary involvement in wildlife conservation projects. The programs have proven to be very successful and have attracted students across Australia and internationally. -

Occasionally, WNV infects and causes disease in other vertebrates, including humans and horses. West Nile virus has re-emerged as an important pathogen as several recent outbreaks of encephalomyelitis have been reported from different parts of Europe in addition to the large epidemic that has swept across North America.
