Prof. AYŞECAN TERZİOĞLU Key words: Israel, Racialization, Jewish Identity, Colonialism, Hierarchy This paper examines the specter of romantic relationships between Arabs and Jews in Israel. Given the statistical rarity of such relationships, the extensive public, media, and governmental attention paid to preventing ‘miscegenation’ seems paradoxical. I begin with an exploration of these attempts, which range from highly successful advertising campaigns and televised interventions to citizen patrol groups, physical assault, and, in the case of underage women, incarceration in reform schools. By turning to work on racializing processes within contested colonial space, this research traces the specter of ‘mixed’ relationships back to fears of internal contamination and the unstable nature of racial membership within racialized hierarchies of power. I conclude with a close analysis of three works – two novels and one film – that revolve around relationships between Arab and Jewish characters. Palestinian Christians Palestinian Christians are the descendants of the original indigenous Christians who first believed in Jesus Christ. They are the descendants of the disciples of Jesus Christ & the descendants of other Jews, Philistines, Arabs, Aramaeans/Eremites, Canaanites, Greeks, Romans, Persians & Samaritans... who accepted the Messiah when He was with them in the flesh. Today, they live in Nazareth, Bethlehem, Gaza, Nablus, Ramallah, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Haifa, Jenin, Taybeh, Birzeit, Jifna, al-Bireh, Zababdeh, Tel Aviv, Tubas, Azzun, Aboud, Tiberias, Sakhnin, Shefa-'Amr, Galilee, Jish, Amman, & other places in the Biblical Palestine & Jordan, in addition to the exile. They are Arab Christian Believers of Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Catholic (eastern & western rites), Protestant, Evangelical & other denominations, who have ethnic or family origins in Palestine. In both the local dialect of Palestinian Arabic and in classical or modern standard Arabic, Christians are called Nasrani (a derivative of the Arabic word for Nazareth, al-Nasira) or Masihi (a derivative of Arabic word Masih, meaning "Messiah"). Christians comprise less than 4% of Palestinian Arabs living within the borders of former Mandate Palestine today (around 4% in the West Bank, a negligible percentage in Gaza, and nearly 10% of Israeli Arabs). According to official British Mandate estimates, Mandate Palestine’s Christian population varied between 9.5% (1922) and 7.9% (1946) of the total population. Demographics and Denominations Today, the majority of Palestinian Christians live abroad. In 2005, it was estimated that the Christian population of the Palestinian territories was between 40,000 and 90,000 people, or 2.1 to 3.4% of the population. -

1 Noach 5776 (10/16/15) Rabbi Leah A. Citrin Temple Beth Or, Raleigh, NC Not so long ago, I struggled tremendously to identify my feelings. It wasn’t that I didn’t have them, but rather that they felt elusive. Recognizing the complexity of emotions meant realizing that we as humans feel more than one thing at a time. Learning to feel without judging what I am feeling is an ongoing journey for me. After a long week of senseless violence and terror in Israel, I am certainly feeling many emotions. On this Shabbat, I join with rabbis from all the major denominations in the United States in observing a Sabbath of Solidarity with Israel. 1 Tonight, I want to share my feelings; feelings rooted in love for Am, Eretz, and Medinat Yisrael; the people, the land, and the state of Israel. I share these feelings not to spark judgment or debate but rather to encourage conversation; conversation that is real, honest, and heartfelt; conversation that is emotional and delicate; conversation rooted in respect and commitment. Tonight, I feel scared. The terrorist attacks that have taken place this week in Jerusalem are different. They have not been aimed at killing as many as possible. They have been intimate and random acts of violence. Stabbing someone repeatedly with a knife inflicts pain in a way different from detonating explosives on a bus. To know that many Israelis are afraid to be out in public places worried about the next attack makes me feel scared. Israeli Culture 2019 - Topic Menu 1. Nation-State Law Explainer What is the Nation-State Bill? The Nation-State Bill is a Basic Law that, for the first time, anchors in law Israel’s status as the “national home of the Jewish people.” Among its 11 clauses, the bill defines such things as state symbols like the flag and national anthem, the official language, national holidays, the Sabbath, the capital Jerusalem, relations with the Diaspora, and of Jewish settlement. So what’s the problem? #1 - No mention of democracy or equality Opponents of the bill note that there is no mention anywhere in the bill—nor in any other Basic Law, for that matter— of the term “equality.” Because of the need to guarantee minority rights, almost all nation-states in the world include an explicit commitment to the value of equality in their constitution or other core legislation. Israel’s Declaration of Independence contains an explicit guarantee of this sort. Moreover, the bill omits any mention of Israel's democratic character, thereby calling into question the existing "Jewish and democratic" formula that appears in previous Basic Laws. Opponents of the bill argue that this deficiency may lead to privileging Israel’s Jewish character over its democratic one, with a broad set of ramifications on everything from education policy to religion and state. Proponents, on the other hand, contend that the existing Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty defines Israel’s democratic character. Therefore, the present bill was necessary to anchor Israel’s Jewish character in constitutional law. So what’s the problem? #2 – Majority-Minority Relations The Nation-State Bill contains two clauses that affect the standing of Israel’s non-Jewish minority groups, especially Arab-Israelis who make up 20 percent of the population. -
The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna
Article Between Yerushalayim DeLita and Jerusalem— The Memorial Inscription from the Bimah of the Great Synagogue of Vilna Jon Seligman Israel Antiquities Authority, Jerusalem 91004, Israel; [email protected] Received: 19 February 2020; Accepted: 18 March 2020; Published: 1 April 2020 Abstract: During excavations of the bimah (the platform for reading the Torah) of the 17th-century Great Synagogue of Vilna (Vilnius, Lithuania), an important memorial inscription was exposed. This paper describes the new finds associated with the baroque-rococo architecture of the bimah and focuses on the inscription and its meaning. The Hebrew inscription, engraved on a large stone slab, is a complex rabbinic text filled with biblical allusions, symbolism, gematria, and abbreviations. The text describes the donation of a Torah reading table in 1796 in honour of R. Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and of Sarah by their sons, R. Eliezer and Shmuel. The inscription notes the aliyah (emigration) of Ḥayim and Sarah to Eretz Israel, the Land of Israel. The interpretation of the inscription shows the use of multiple messianic motifs. Historical analysis identifies the involvement of the Vilna community with the support of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Ottoman Palestine) and the aliyah of senior scholars and community leaders at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Amongst these figures were Ḥayim ben Ḥayim and Sarah, with Ḥayim ben Ḥayim going on to represent the Vilna community in the Land of Israel as its emissary, distributing charitable donations to the scholarly Ashkenazi community resident in Tiberias, Safed, and later Jerusalem.
