Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

De Lithosiinen gelijken, in rustenden toestand, vaak op Blattiden of Kakkerlakken, daar zij de breede achtervleugels onder de over het alge- meen smalle, lancetvormige voorvleugels opvouwen en deze gewoonlijk nog over elkaar heengeschoven worden, zoodat de vleugels nauwelijks breeder zijn dan het lichaam. Daarbij komt nog het snelle wegloopen en wegkruipen onder afgevallen bladeren, gras enz. Zij vliegen 's nachts meer dan overdag en nooit ver, laten zich spoedig vallen en kunnen springen. De voorvleugels der meeste soorten zijn opvaliend geteekend met banden en strepen ; de achtervleugels meestal eenkleurig bruin, grijs, wit of geel. De kop is breed met uitpuilende kleine zwarte oogen; de antennen zijn vrij kort, draadvormig of kort gekamd, dikwijls met haarbosjes aan de bases. De palpen zijn recht en kort, soms gebogen, het lichaam is teer, in tegenstelling met dat der Noctui'den enz. De rupsen der Lithosiinen gelijken veel op elkaar; zij leven bijna alle op korstmossen aan boomen, steenen enz.; zij zijn behaard en met wratjes bezet. Bij verontrusting laten zij zich aan een draad zakken om op den grond zich uit de voeten te maken. ABSTRACT The butterflies Byblia ilithyia (Nymphalidae), Pieris canidia (Pieridae) and Azanus jesous (Lycaenidae) and the day-flying moth, Nyctemera adversata (Erebidae) are oligophagous. Previously, only B. ilithyia has been reported to be occurring in this region while the other three species are being reported for the first time from this region. The larval host plants include Jatropha gossypiifolia and Tragia involucrata for B. ilithyia, Brassica oleracea var. oleracea and B. oleracea var. botrytis for P. canidia, and Acacia auriculiformis for Azanus jesous. The nectar plants include Tragia involucrata, Euphorbia hirta and Jatropha gossypiifolia for B. ilithyia, Premna latifolia and Cleome viscosa for P. canidia, Lagascea mollis, Tridax procumbens and Digera muricata for A. jesous and Bidens pilosa for 275 N. adversata. The study recommends extensive field investigations to find out more larval plants and nectar plants for each Page lepidopteran species now reported. -

Males confer PA on the female by seminal infusion, and females pass this gift, together with PA that they themselves procured as larvae, to the eggs. Here we show that PA protects the eggs against parasitization by the chalcidoid wasp, Trichogramma ostriniae. Eggs laid subsequent to a first mating of an Utetheisa female receive most of their PA from the female. The amount they receive from the male is insufficient to provide for full protection. The first observation of the erebid moth Eilema albicosta (Rogenhofer, 1894) in the province of Málaga is reported. It represents the third record for the Iberian Peninsula. Recibido: 25 de octubre de 2014 Publicado on-line: 10 de noviembre de 2014 Aceptado: 29 de octubre de 2014 Hasta hace pocos años, Eilema albicosta (Rogenhofer, 1894) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) era considerada endémica de las islas Canarias, con la excepción de dos imagos recolectados por Agenjo (1963) en un pinar piñonero (Pinus pinea) de Punta Umbría (Huelva). Estos individuos se pensaba que podían provenir de un transporte accidental (Ylla et al., 2010). El reciente descubrimiento de una nueva población en El Rompido (Huelva), cercana geográficamente a la anterior, hace suponer que la especie está afincada en la costa onubense y, probablemente, extendida hasta el Algarve portugués (Citores et al., 2013).
