Los Angeles, CA—January 2016 Alfred Music, the world leader in educational print music publishing since 1922, announces the release of new elementary classroom resources. Celebrate with Sound!, Hear It, Read It, Write It!, The Music Center Handbook, Music Class Playlist, and Rockin’ the Radio.

Celebrate with Sound! offers an educational way to celebrate the holidays with chants, body percussion, and classroom instruments. Each chant presents three stepping stones to rhythmic reading: practice the spoken ostinatos first, transfer to body percussion next, and then play on classroom instruments. PDF files on the included Data CD make it easy to print or project the music notation in the classroom. The collection includes selections for 20 holidays, four seasons of the year, and a happy birthday chant. Recommended for grades 2 and up.

There are three basic elements to learning to read music: listening, reading, and writing. Hear It, Read It, Write It! provides 30 step-by-step sequential lessons for developing these skills. Rhythm, note, and interval concepts are taught in the following way: first, hear and echo a short musical example; second, read and perform a notated exercise; and third, notate musical phrases as demonstrated on the CD. Worksheet-style student pages are included as reproducible PDFs. Recommended for 4th through 9th grade ensembles or music classes.

The Music Center Handbook includes ideas for 15 do-it-yourself learning stations in the music classroom. Detailed directions provide a list of materials, reproducible templates, and step-by-step instructions for assembling the creative stations. Complete lesson plans clearly outline the objectives and activities for each. Grade level recommendations are provided throughout the book, ranging from K–6.

Music Class Playlist features 36 engaging listening lessons from various musical styles. The idea is to invite students to experience, analyze, and reflect on an array of musical genres, including Motown, pop, rock ‘n’ roll, bluegrass, opera, Broadway, and film. Teacher preparation and lesson planning is minimal as materials are few, and Common Core and National Standards are listed on every page. Recommended for grades 4 and up.

Students will rock out to songs like Katy Perry’s “Roar,” The Beatles’ “She Loves You,” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” with Mari Schay’s age-appropriate, skill-building arrangements for Orff and classroom percussion, Rockin’ the Radio. Rhythmic concepts, note reading, playing techniques are reinforced as the author includes several pages of teaching strategies to guide the process (even addressing the new national standards). The enhanced CD includes full performance demonstrations of all ten songs, as well as printable/reproducible/projectable instrument parts. Recommended for grades 4–9.

New classroom educational resources from Alfred Music range in price from $19.99 to $29.99 and are available at music retail stores, online retailers, and alfred.com.

Los Angeles, CA—January 2016 Alfred Music, the world leader in educational print music publishing since 1922, announces the release of new elementary classroom software for interactive whiteboards. The Tale of Guido d’Arezzo and Recorder Express Interactive bring creativity and innovation to the music classroom.

The Tale of Guido d’Arezzo, an interactive storybook about the inventor of music notation, is told with beautiful illustrations and age-appropriate vocabulary, and can be read from the screen or heard by clicking the listen icon. Students will learn how this medieval monk laid the groundwork for the system of music notation that we use today. Embedded audio plays period music, whimsical sound effects, and a professionally-voiced narration. As teachers scroll through each interactive page, they will be able to click highlighted elements to watch the story come to life. Recommended for grades 1–5 . Recorder Express Interactive, designed to be used alone or with the best-selling soprano recorder method, includes 11 interactive lessons that introduce a single note, teaches its fingering, and then incorporates the note into a song. Play along with recorded accompaniments and then extend learning with a skill-building activity. Recommended for grades 2 and up. Both resources utilize flash technology that work on individual computers and interactive whiteboards.

An interactive whiteboard is an instructional tool that allows computer images to be displayed onto a board using a digital projector. Instructors can then manipulate the elements on the board by using their finger as a mouse, directly on the screen. Items can be dragged, clicked, or copied, and the lecturer can handwrite notes, which can be transformed into text and saved. Interactive whiteboards are a powerful tool in the classroom—adding interactivity and collaboration, allowing the integration of media content into the lecture, and supporting collaborative learning.

Los Angeles, CA—January 2016 Alfred Music is pleased to announce a new jazz play-along series called Playing on the Changes. This series, authored by renowned musician Bob Mintzer, features five books with extensive musical coverage.

The books feature 13 jazz etudes through the various chord qualities found in standards and jazz tunes in all 12 keys. Mintzer has written out etude solos that cover changes in a way that familiarizes the learner with the sound of each harmonic setting. All of the books come with TNT 2 software, which allows a learner to listen to and analyze the etudes, as well as practice and play on the harmonic exercises by removing Mintzer’s saxophone from the mix. The software allows the tempo to be slowed down to allow students to learn the changes at their own pace. The five books feature material for C instruments, B-flat tenor saxophone & soprano saxophone, B-flat trumpet & clarinet, E-flat instruments, and bass clef instruments.

This new series builds upon Mintzer’s repertoire of distinguished etude books. With the sheer amount of information contained in them, plus the additions of the CD and TNT 2 software, these are the best etude books yet. Areas covered include major 7th chords, minor 7th chords, dominant 7th chords (Mixolydian, altered dominant, and half-whole diminished), minor ii (flat-5) chords, tritone substitutions, and a variety of progressions using all of the above.

Bob Mintzer has a lifetime of jazz experience. He has been a member of the GRAMMY® Award-winning Yellow Jackets for the past two decades and leads his own GRAMMY® Award-winning big band. He is the Buzz McCoy Endowed Chair of jazz studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In addition to playing and teaching, Mintzer travels around the world to give workshops, authors books on jazz, and writes music for orchestra, concert band, and big band. He is a triple threat musician—equally active in the areas of performance, composing/arranging, and music education.

Each instrumentation of Playing on the Changes is available as a book and DVD set for $24.99 at music retail stores, online retailers, and at alfred.com.

Los Angeles, CA—January 2016 Home to the world’s largest and most extensive drum and percussion catalog, Alfred Music releases What Not to Play! A Drummer’s Guide to Crafting a Drum Part from master musician and former Wings drummer, Denny Seiwell.

The book and DVD features exercises for waking up the hands, as well as tips on interpreting charts, sight-reading, and how to find the drum part in a new song. Many drummers tend to fall back on standard beats they already know, but if one listens carefully, many times the part is hidden within the music. This book also includes both audio and visual examples of author, Denny Seiwell, discussing how listening and crafting a drum part can be more fun and rewarding when approaching music with this philosophy in mind.

The foreword was written by legendary singer/ Paul McCartney, and musical examples from McCartney’s repertoire are found throughout the book. McCartney had this to say regarding What Not to Play!: “I’m happy that Denny has finally written a book where he shares a lifetime of the skills and musical insights that have made him such a valuable asset to those of us he’s worked with.” The DVD includes five original McCartney recordings including “My Love,” Oh Woman, Oh Why,” and ”Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.”

In a career that has taken him from the intimacy of New York’s most respected jazz clubs, to rock’s biggest stadiums, to countless sessions in the studio, Denny Seiwell has proven himself to be one of the most respected musicians at work today. Following his career with the jazz elite, Seiwell became a founding member of the post-Beatles phenomenon, Wings. Other highlights of his career include working with Joe Cocker, and The Who (with the London Symphony) on their ground-breaking version of the rock opera, Tommy.

What Not to Play! is now available for $19.99 at music retail stores, online retailers, and at alfred.com.
