One correspondent in the Mountain States of the U. S. related how he was induced to sell his possessions, giving the proceeds to the Armstrongs in preparation for their prophesied calamity in 197 2. The total "take" from this man-over $1 -Million dollars. Another family in the New England area expressed thankfulness that they escaped Armstrongism with sanity and good health after having lost their home and $200,000. A family from the South was not so fortunate. A member of their family, a former student of Ambassador College, suffered a nervous breakdown over the confused state of affairs in the Armstrong church-different standards for different people. It has taken several years to recover and bring stability back to this family. Another Ambassador College student was brought to 5uch state of depression after sitting through a college class lecture that he walked a short distance to "suicide bridge" and ended it all by plummeting to the rocks below-the same location where many bankrupt millionaires plunged to their death after the stock market crash in the depression year of 19 29. Thousands of normal family units have been broken up by lhe Armstrong's regime. Many, many people have suffered physical ailments and died rather than seek aid from those in the medical profession. But, perhaps most pathetic of all is the little known case of the poor, the fatherless and the widow who have been deprived or have deprived themselves of, adequate food, lothing and shelter to give to an organization which freely viii ix admits that it's commission is not the same as that which Acknowledgements Christ gave to His apostles and His church.     Armstrongism and the Worldwide Church of God I. WHERE THIS CULT ORIGINATED A. This cult can be traced back to a man by the name of Herbert W. Armstrong and his supposed divine appointments. 1. Herbert Armstrong started out his career asa promotional and advertising man in Des Moines, Iowa in 1912. But in 1920 his advertising business failed in what he described as a flash depression 2. In 1924 Armstrong moved to Oregon and on two more separate occasions his business enterprises `failed because of what he described as "forces beyond his control". 3. Sometime between 1924 and 1931 Armstrong was supposedly converted and began to write and do evangelistic work. 4. It is interesting to note that Armstrong's conversion came about through his wife's discovery and it was a conversion to what she had found. She believed that obedience to God's spiritual laws which were summed upin the ten commandments was necessary for salvation. 5. Armstrong at first set out to prove that his wife was wrong but later he concluded that she had indeed found the truth which meant to him that most of Christendom was not proclaiming the truth. 6. Armstrong was ordained in Eugene, Oregon in 1931 and began to conductevangelistic campaigns there. 7. In January 1934 Armstrong began a radio program in Eugene~ Oregon entitled "The World Tomorrow" and with his incredible speaking and promotional abilities he launched his cultist career filled with all kinds of false and heretical teachings. 8. At exactly 10A.M. on January 1934 Armstrong declared this to be the starting point of the fulfillment of 90% of all Bible prophecies.

    Early Christological Heresies Introduction When a Bible student reads some of the history of the early church regarding the theological debates about the Trinity and the natures of Christ, he can be easily overwhelmed with detail and thrown into complete confusion. Doctrines such as Apollinarianism or Monothelitism just flummox him. Sadly some of the books and dictionary articles on these subjects are technical, full of jargon and confusing. Indeed, it is not easy even for students who have studied this for some time. Well, this paper is written to try to make this complex web of theology a little bit easier to understand. The reason for this difficulty is the complexity of the wonderful person of Christ. The theological statements are so difficult because they are trying to evaluate the depths and glory of something that is too high for us to grasp; we can only seek to encapsulate this glory in human terms as best as we can. Consequently, as a clearer doctrinal statement arose, heretics quickly appeared to countermand that because they felt that the former teaching denied or contradicted something else about Christ; thus the church went back and forth in a pendulum effect either overstating Christ’s deity or his humanity (see Appendix One). Another factor is that in post-apostolic early church there was no single orthodox party. As new ideas arose, there would be a number of parties vying for support. For instance, as Docetism became a threat, some Christians confronted it with a type of Adoptionist doctrine, others with more Biblical teachings; but at the same time there were people with Modalistic theology.

    Errors Of Armstrongism Jesus said, “Most definitely I tell you, unless one is born-again, they cannot see the Kingdom of God … You must be born-again” (John 3:3 & 7). ‘If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved’ (Romans 10:9). Armstrongism is a strange mixture of faiths. The Worldwide Church of God, also known as the Church of God International, was founded by Herbert W Armstrong and continued by his son, Garner Ted Armstrong. Herbert stated in the ‘Plain Truth’ magazine (July/August 1973) ‘the work going on from the Ambassador College and the Worldwide Church of God, is the only work on earth proclaiming the very Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world in great power’. The Armstrong’s actually believe from the death of the apostles until Armstrong began his church in 1934, the true Gospel was lost and he restored it. They also believe Herbert Armstrong was ‘the Elijah who was to come’. He certainly was not because Jesus told us John the Baptist was the one who came in the Spirit and power of Elijah. A man named Ronald Weinland believes he is one of the end-time prophets spoken of in Revelation. He is not because the two witnesses are Jewish men from Jerusalem. We regard that as delusions of grandeur. As we do a study of this cult, we will see that there are many other glaring errors in their doctrine. Like all cults, as people cluster around a certain leader or false prophet, erroneous facts come to light.
