They can be viewed, saved to your computer, or printed at your convenience. 3 HOW TO USE THIS BOOK You hold in your hand the key to playing some of the greatest guitar ever committed to tape: the alluringly ominous fingerpicking of “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” the mysterious Eastern blend in “Black Mountain Side,” all the parts to the incomparable “Stairway to Heaven,” and much more, including some mandolin and electric guitar parts, if you feel like branching out . By far the easiest way to get these tunes into your fingers is by watching the videos on the included DVD . Seeing is believing, but in this case, it’s also learning; the various hosts will guide you through every riff, variation, and trick employed by Jimmy Page (and, on the odd occasion, John Paul Jones), and though these parts are not easy per se, once you nail them, playing the whole song is just a matter of stringing these pieces together, which the hosts demonstrate at the end of every lesson . Of course, within these pages are also written lessons to supplement the videos . The TAB in these lessons matches exactly with what’s being played on the video, and when perusing the written lessons, you’ll know there’s a video counterpart whenever you see the symbol . Finally, don’t overlook the considerable extras on the DVD disc itself . We’ve included our exclusive TNT 2 software—upon installation, you’ll be able to hear sound-alike recordings of all these songs, alter the vocal and instrument mixes for more compelling practice sessions, loop sections, and even change keys and tempos . The disc also comes with sound-alike and play-along MP3s of each song, and printable PDF files of the complete guitar transcriptions . For complete instructions on using the DVD to access the TNT 2 Custom Mix software, the MP3s, and the PDF transcriptions, please refer to pg . 1 . To print the complete transcription of this song, see the “DVD-Rom Materials” folder on your disc. 5 BABe I’M GONNA LEAVE YOU Words and Music by ANNE BREDON, JIMMY PAGE, and ROBERT PLANT SEssiON PREP “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” was composed by Anne Bredon in the late 1950s. It was recorded by Joan Baez in 1962 and was mistakenly credited as “traditional” (meaning a public domain folk song). Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were both fans of Baez and thought they were reinterpreting a traditional folk song when they recorded it for the first Led Zeppelin album in 1969. This is an excellent example of Page’s vision for the sound of Led Zeppelin. “I’d like to play it heavy,” he has said, “but with a lot of light and shade.” IN THE RACK This song was most likely recorded on a Gibson J-200 that Page borrowed from Big Jim Sullivan (a famed London session guitarist and featured regular on Tom Jones’s This Is Tom Jones TV variety show). The electric parts were played on Page’s Telecaster—often called the “Dragon Tele,” referencing Page’s hand-painted designs on the guitar. CHORDS UsED IN THis SONG Due to the moving bass line and the melody that weaves through the chords there are too many chord forms to list here in their entirety. But the key to the whole song can be found in just these four chords—an A minor progression with a descending bass to E. FORM CHART Intro (8 bars)—Verses 1–2 (each verse is 32 bars, comprised of three distinct segments: AABC)—Interlude (8 bars)—Bridge (28 bars based on the intro chord progression)—Intro—Verse 3 (16 bars)—Bridge (8 bars)—Verse 4 (16 bars)—Bridge (8 bars plus 4-bar tag [intro figure])—Verse 5 (16 bars)—Bridge—Outro TAKE 1: THE INTRO Example 1: The first four bars of the intro set up the entire song. The figure is a simple four-note arpeggio pattern with a melody on top that tends to anticipate the next chord. In other words, think of the last note in each measure as the first note of the next chord. It will really help as you set up your fingerings. The bottom note of the F chord, which begins on the anticipation to bar 4, is fretted with the thumb. If you can’t use your thumb, a full barre chord will work as long as you grab the C note (the anticipation of the F chord) with the full barre, letting it ring while you play the rest of the F chord. As far as the fingerpicking pattern goes, be sure to follow the fingerings suggested by the pima notation—the letters p, i, m, and a shown in the example. In this notation, p = thumb, i = index finger, m = middle finger, and a = the pinky. Remember: the TNT 2 software can make it easier to practice the examples. Simply locate the part in question within the software, select just that section in the audio wave to loop it, and “solo” the guitar part. You can also use the tempo control to slow down the loop. © 1969 (Renewed) FLAMES OF ALBION MUSIC, INC. and UNIVERSAL-SONGS OF POLYGRAM INTERNATIONAL , INC. TAKE 2: VERSES 1, 2, 4, 5, AND 6 Example 3: Most of the verses are 32 bars long and are comprised of their own AABC form, with the A section being exactly the same as the eight-bar intro that you have already learned. The eight-bar B section of the verses is shown below. It continues the same type of melodic fingerpicking pattern, only now the first four bars are over F and E7 chords and the second half is a return to the basic intro chord progression. 7 Example 4: The final eight bars of the verse are a short instrumental interlude that provides some space before the verse repeats. This section is a melodic strumming figure based off a variety of Am and Dm chord voicings played on the middle strings while the open 5th and 1st strings ring. Don’t be intimidated by the rhythmic notation—listen to the recording and watch the video. It’s easier than it looks! TAKE 3: THE INTERLUDE AND BRIDGE Example 5: The interlude comes in at bar 41. This is a guitar instrumental figure based on Am and Dm chords voiced up and down the neck. This section is very straightforward without the highly anticipated melodies found in previous sections. .

  • A Tribute to Led Zeppelin from Hell's Kitchen Liner Notes
Led Blimpie: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin from Hell’s Kitchen Liner Notes Originally begun as a 3 song demo, this project evolved into a full-on research project to discover the recording styles used to capture Zeppelin's original tracks. Sifting through over 3 decades of interviews, finding the gems where Page revealed his approach, the band enrolled in “Zeppelin University” and received their doctorate in “Jimmy Page's Recording Techniques”. The result is their thesis, an album entitled: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin from Hell's Kitchen. The physical CD and digipack are adorned with original Led Blimpie artwork that parodies the iconic Zeppelin imagery. "This was one of the most challenging projects I've ever had as a producer/engineer...think of it; to create an accurate reproduction of Jimmy Page's late 60's/early 70's analog productions using modern recording gear in my small project studio. Hats off to the boys in the band and to everyone involved.. Enjoy!" -Freddie Katz Co-Producer/Engineer Following is a track-by-track telling of how it all came together by Co-Producer and Led Blimpie guitarist, Thor Fields. Black Dog -originally from Led Zeppelin IV The guitar tone on this particular track has a very distinct sound. The left guitar was played live with the band through a Marshall JCM 800 half stack with 4X12's, while the right and middle (overdubbed) guitars went straight into the mic channel of the mixing board and then into two compressors in series. For the Leslie sounds on the solo, we used the Neo Instruments “Ventilator" in stereo (outputting to two amps).
