  • Tickets for Troops Annual Review 2016
TICKETS FOR TROOPS ANNUAL REVIEW 2016 The Sun Military Awards Nominees at Number 10 Downing Street: Tickets For Troops was nominated for ‘Support to Armed Forces’ FOREWORD Thanks to the tremendous philanthropy of our supporters and donors from the nation’s live sports and events industry, 2016 was another active year for Tickets For Troops. We worked closely with hundreds of ticketing professionals, agents, box offices, promoters, clubs, teams and many more groups to ensure our servicemen and women continued to enjoy the delights of the sporting, musical, theatrical and entertainment world. This wonderful generosity combined with some beavering away in the Tickets For Troops office ensured that we were able to distribute 152,652 complimentary tickets for 6,291 events to our military members. Half way through the year, we were delighted to welcome on board a new team of regional volunteers known as ambassadors who are responsible for helping to increase the number of donors in their respective regions. The volunteer opportunity attracted a large number of applications from all around the country and the overall standard was exceptionally high. It was humbling for the team to see how many people from within the forces community wanted to give something back to Tickets For Troops. The regional ambassadors are being managed by our newest employee Elisabeth Roberts - recruited on a part-time basis thanks to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund grant. We were sad to lose Anastasia Baker in October, she was a superb asset to the team with her excellent customer service manner and speedy ticket packaging skills - we wish her well for the future.

  • Noble Rot Meets Ecstatic Synth- Poppers Hot Chip Words by Dan Keeling Photographs by Benjamin Mcmahon
Words by Dan Keeling Noble Rot Photographs by meets ecstatic synth- SHOOT FROM THE CHIP SHOOT Benjamin McMahon poppers Hot Chip “Gordon Ramsay used to cook here a long time ago,” says Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, reading the menu at Chez Bruce in Wandsworth. “When I last ate here, a friend from uni was working in the kitchen and I absolutely loved it.” To Joe’s left, fellow band member Al Doyle is enjoying his first drink of the evening – Vouette & Sorbée ‘Saignée de Sorbée’ Champagne – after a day rehearsing in a nearby studio for the band’s imminent support headline slot at Hackney’s All Points East festival. With their new album heralding a high point in their long career (it’s their seventh), the aptly titled A Bath Full of Ecstasy has a blend Dan Keeling: Do you cook at home? Joe Goddard: I cook all the time. I’ve got a Green of synth melodies, bouncing house basslines Egg barbecue and cook a lot of seafood, as well as buying a lot of nice wines from Bottle Apostle to try and soulful vocals that makes it one of our to pair with it. I’m interested in the weirder side of wine. This Vouette & Sorbée reminds me of a records of the year at Rotter Towers. Imagine delicious sparkling red from near Barcelona that I’ve been drinking recently called La Rosita by Pamela Geddes. It’s dry and fruity: it tastes like sparkling Erasure jamming with Daft Punk, Laid Back and Ribena to me, and I’m into that! Frankie Knuckles in a lift, and you might be Al Doyle: It’s delicious and quite unusual – it almost tastes like Pét-Nat rather than Champagne.

  • ANDERTON Music Festival Capitalism
1 Music Festival Capitalism Chris Anderton Abstract: This chapter adds to a growing subfield of music festival studies by examining the business practices and cultures of the commercial outdoor sector, with a particular focus on rock, pop and dance music events. The events of this sector require substantial financial and other capital in order to be staged and achieve success, yet the market is highly volatile, with relatively few festivals managing to attain longevity. It is argued that these events must balance their commercial needs with the socio-cultural expectations of their audiences for hedonistic, carnivalesque experiences that draw on countercultural understanding of festival culture (the countercultural carnivalesque). This balancing act has come into increased focus as corporate promoters, brand sponsors and venture capitalists have sought to dominate the market in the neoliberal era of late capitalism. The chapter examines the riskiness and volatility of the sector before examining contemporary economic strategies for risk management and audience development, and critiques of these corporatizing and mainstreaming processes. Keywords: music festival; carnivalesque; counterculture; risk management; cool capitalism A popular music festival may be defined as a live event consisting of multiple musical performances, held over one or more days (Shuker, 2017, 131), though the connotations of 2 the word “festival” extend much further than this, as I will discuss below. For the purposes of this chapter, “popular music” is conceived as music that is produced by contemporary artists, has commercial appeal, and does not rely on public subsidies to exist, hence typically ranges from rock and pop through to rap and electronic dance music, but excludes most classical music and opera (Connolly and Krueger 2006, 667).

VICTORIOUS FESTIVAL OVERVIEW Victorious Festival is set for its seventh August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival, located along Southsea’s beautiful seafront, will kick off with a partially open site on Friday 23rd August (Common Stage, World Music Village, Street Food Way & Premium Upgrade Area ONLY) to get everyone warmed up ready for the full affair on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August 2019. The festival has multiple stages offering a wide variety of music, including two main stages playing host to the biggest performers – last year saw The Prodigy, Paul Weller, Kaiser Chiefs, Years & Years and Paloma Faith headlining. As well as many more acts across the weekend! Victorious Festival is steadily growing each year, the extensive festival site boasts a huge Kids Arena where all activities and entertainment are free, an array of market and food stalls, as well as free entry to some of the amazing Southsea Seafront attractions within the site. With all of this on offer to ticket holders, the event continues to be one of the best value music festivals in the UK! The festival also offers festival-goers the opportunity to camp offsite at Farlington Playing Fields with a free-to-campers shuttle bus service to and from the festival site.
