2012 MJSTASE 20th Annual Conference 美東南玉山科技協會第二十屆年會

My Dear Monte Jade Members, Guests, and Friends,

Thank you for attending the 20th Annual Conference of the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association of Southeastern US (MJSTASE) and the Young Achiever Ceremony. We are an active chapter of the Global Monte Jade Science and Technology Association (www.mjglobal.org), having chapters around the world – from the United States, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland to Taiwan. We have been busy throughout the year building stronger networks within our members and local communities.

In 2012, we have been focusing on many activities that include: holding seminars on Anti- Trust law, college admission and scholarship applications, and Taiwan ECFA. Some of these activities are partnerships with our sister organizations, such as CAPASUS, ACIT, and ACP. All of these efforts are dedicated to fulfill the objectives of our mission. This year marks the 20th year of our chapter which is a huge milestone for us. Therefore, we have taken an initiative into the latest internet technology by providing a series of Cloud Technology seminars in October and November. These seminars will give all members a more complete and thorough view on Cloud Technology. For our 20th annual conference, it is a great honor to have two prestigious professors: Dr. Chintay Shih as our keynote speaker, who is also a Taiwan IT pioneer, and Dr. Calton Pu as our Cloud Computing speaker.

The Young Achiever Award will be presented to 9 winners in recognition for their academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

Sincerely Yours,

Peter Chyan Peter Chyan 2012 Chairman

2012 MJSTASE 20th Annual Conference 美東南玉山科技協會第二十屆年會

Dear My Fellow Monte Jade Members and Friends,

On behalf the MJSTA Scholarship Foundation of Southeastern Region, Inc., I would like to thank you for your continuing support and generous contribution to the MJSTASE Young

Achiever Awards during the past years. Without your participation, it is not a possible task.

Four years ago, the Foundation was founded and granted a 501 (C)(3) Tax Exempt Status by the IRS. This will allow the scholarship contributors to have tax benefit.

The Foundation’s mission is not only sponsoring the Young Achiever Awards, but also helping allocate internship program for high school and college students during the summer months. The Foundation is also looking into the feasibility of helping the MJSTASE to have mentoring program for young entrepreneurs in our region. We may set up a grant for the education our young Monte Jade members in the future.

In order to strengthen the Board functions, we have established a structure of the Board consisting of three long term members along with three latest immediate Past-Association Chairs and current Chair who will be stepping down each year when new immediate Chair move up. Three long tern members are Dr. K.J. Tan, Dr. Sueling Wang and Jimmy Ho; while other Board members are Mike Wang, Todd Yu and I I, as Board President, and Current Chair Peter Chyan.

This year the Board decided to delegate the responsibility of selection process for the Youth Achiever Award to the Foundation. The Board decided nine MJ Youth Achiever Award winners judged by a five-Professor panel including: Drs. Yu-Shen Hsu (GSU), Steven Y. Liang (GT), ChinChen Hung (SCAD), Ray Wang (GT), and Yao-wen Huang (UGA).

The MJSTASE is celebrating the 20th Jubilee of foundation. This is an important milestone for our growth. The Foundation and the Association have established a strong structure with a by-laws and codes during the last twenty years. For this, I have collected and compiled the winners of MJ Youth Achiever Awards attached followed this year’s recipients. Hope one day, those past-winners will make contributions and support to our Awards in the future. Nevertheless, we will continue to define the criteria as well as the increasing quota and scholarship amount for the coming years. We need your continuing support and commitment for the coming year.

Thank you and have a good night.

Sincerely,

Yaowen Huang

President, 2012 MJSTASE Foundation

Global Cloud Technology

November 10, 2012 – Cultural Center of TECO, Atlanta

A World of Opportunities: Internet of Things and Computing Clouds 2:30 – 3:30 Dr. Calton Pu 3:30 – 3:45 Break Moving toward "Innovation Economy" Dr. Chintay Shih During the past 30 years, Taiwan has built its IT industry as one of the leading suppliers to the world market. However, recently Apple iPhone and iPad changed the landscape of the IT global supply chain. Samsung quickly catch up and became a new leader in this 3:45 – 4:45 area. Can Taiwan IT industry maintain its position? Will Taiwan industry transform into an innovation lead value-creation economy? Internet and mobile service are the key drivers that change today’s businesses, education, health care, entertainments and government services. Taiwan's efforts in promoting IT enabled services can build new service industries based on solid manufacturing foundations. Moving beyond "OEM" model, a new paradigm shift is needed. Councilmember Alex Wan

Councilmember Alex Wan has been proudly serving as a Council member since 2010, but his record of public service didn’t begin there. Educated at Georgia Institute of Technology, he earned a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering there in 1988. In 1993, he went on to attend the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Penslyvania where he earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Finance. He wasn’t done with schooling even then, furthering himself while attending the Minority Business Executive Program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 2001.

After attending Georgia Tech, Councilmember Wan began his very prolific and successful career with the Prudential Investment Corporation’s Corporate Finance Group living in Newark, New Jersey from 1988-1989. In 1990, he relocated to Atlanta and joined Prudential’s Real Estate and Acquisitions team as an Investment Analyst. From 1993-2009 he served as President of Optima, Inc., an architecture-engineering consulting firm, and from 2009-2012 he served as Director of Development for Jerusalem House, Inc., provider of permanent, supportive housing to families affected by HIV/AIDS in Atlanta. He is currently the Director of Development for Libraries, which holds more than 3.7 million print and electronic volumes and over 56,000 e-journal titles.

Councilmember Wan’s public service hardly began with his election as the representative of District 6 in 2010. There were sparks of this service from the beginning of his life that formally took shape as he grew in to a man. Two causes that have always been particularly close to his heart are disadvantaged children and the community affected by largely invasive illnesses such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. Councilmember Wan is a man who lends his talent and time to erradicating these illnesses and easing the burden on the families and children affected by them.

As early as 1994 Councilmember Wan began showing his passion for helping others when he volunteered with Project Open Hand, which provides meals for those living with a chronic disease. From 1995-1997 Councilmember Wan served as the Board Secretary for Our House, Inc., a daycare center for homeless children. From 1997-2003 Councilmember Wan served on the Joining Hearts Host Committee which produces an important fundraiser for people living with HIV/AIDS. In 2003, Councilmember Wan formed For the Kid in All of Us, Inc., which hosts an annual toy and school supply drives for socio-economically disadvantaged children in Georgia.

Over his lifetime and career, Councilmember Wan realized that we must be the driving force behind the changes we hope to see in this world. To that end, he decided to be a leader, serving as an example for all those that may someday aspire to further causes such as those he believes in. How could he best do that? He felt it his duty to get politically involved. He began working with Leadership DeKalb, serving twice as Board Secretary (1995-1997 and 2002-2003), and Chair-Elect (1998) and Chair (1999). In 2003, he served Leadership Atlanta as part of Asian Latino Task Force and the Program Committee. In addition to all of the above memberships, he has been an active member of many Asian leadership groups included but not limited to: National Association of Chinese Americans, Asian American Heritage Foundation, and the Asian America Coalition Board of Directors.

Councilmember Wan has been presented with numerous awards for his service including: Outstanding Federal Club Co-Chair Team of a Large Federal Club, Human Rights Campaign (2008), Georgia Asian Times “25 Most Influential Asian Americans in Georgia (2007, 2010-2011)”, and Best Up & Coming Activist, Southern Voice Best of Gay Atlanta (2004). Georgia Trend Magazine’s “Forty Under 40” named him as a rising star in 1997. In 2005, he was given the Philip Rush Award by YouthPride for his exemplary support of youth in Georgia.

“I slept and dreamt that life joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” -Tagore

The Po Chun and Chien Pin Tsang Scholarship was established in this inaugural year of 2010 to commemorate the life of Mr. Po Chun Tsang. The scholarship was established by his grandson and former Monte Jade chairman, Kai Hsu, to continue the legacy of his grandfather’s humanitarian efforts.

Born in 1917, Mr. Tsang was a loving husband, father of five children and ten grandchildren, distinguished military officer, tireless civil servant and humble humanitarian. His life was marked by continued service to others, and always putting the needs of his colleagues, friends and family above his own. It is in this spirit that the Po Chun and Chien Pin Tsang Scholarship was created to promote these ideals in young Chinese-Americans.

Remarks: Due to the difficulty of collecting the earlier issues of the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association in S.E.U.S. (MJSTASE) , I have missed the list of MJ Young Achievers Award recipients in the years of 1993, 1995, and 1996. If any of the MJ members and friends still has one, please contact me at [email protected]. I would like to borrow these issues and will add them to the master list later.

Sincerely Yours, Yao-wen Huang, President of the MJSTASE Foundation 2012.
