  • Home Taping: Country Rock
Home Taping: Country Rock At the time of his death, Gram Parsons was in grave danger of being taken for granted. Although it was accepted that he had 'invented' the musical style known as Country Rock, this was simply being overlooked in a mass outbreak of droopy-moustached yee-hawism. Today it is called New Country and has become the fastest growing market in American popular music. The roots of Country Rock lie in the 1960s recordings of West Coast artists Buck Owens and His Buckaroos, Merle Haggard and The Strangers and the sublime pop- country songwriting of the (late) great Harlan Howard. This was known as the Bakersfield sound, where true-to-life songs and fast shuffle rhythms, often performed by musicians attired in flashy Western duds, caught the creative imagination of approximately one person: the young Gram Parsons. When Parsons founded The International Submarine Band in 1966, rock and roll was entering its progressive phase and the Nashville hit machine was at the peak of its powers - a diabolical climate in which to attempt a revolution. 28 years later we see Gram Parsons in his true light: a man alone with no precedent, no road map, just a vision that has at last begun to register with the record buying public. Today Gram Parsons’s spirit lives on in the music of Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill. And twenty-something years ago, awestruck by the imports in the windows of London's One Stop or Musicland, a small throng of fans were also travelling without a road map.

April 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post has recently upped its prices (again!). Whilst the service is reliable it basically gives us possibly the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.20) 3kgs ($11.40) 5kgs ($14.50). The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.40. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are receiving our newsletter for the first time it may be a bit mind boggling. For starters you won’t see any of the major label Nashville cds promoted here. If you want any most will be listed in the $10 section and $5 section. We offer almost an alternate universe, where everything is great and most importantly can still be accurately referred to as country music. In addition to our newsletters we have 6 or so walk in sales per year. The next one will be Saturday 26th May. This is usually the best as well, especially weather wise. It is by invitation so if you would like to come...believe me it is worthwhile...then please let me know.

  • Roots Report: Hey, Hey It's Mike Nesmith, and Some Music For
Roots Report: Hey, Hey it’s Mike Nesmith, and Some Music for Veterans Day The best in folk, blues, roots and acoustic in the greater RI area Okee dokee folks … How about them Red Sox? Honestly I don’t give a #@%* (insert your favorite expletive here) about them. Sorry, Dad. Folks get mighty excited when the Red Sox win. Not me. People think that having them do well is good for the local economy. Maybe it is. It may help some, but mostly it helps put more cash in the pockets of grossly overpaid players and big corporations. Oh, yeah, and it HURTS local musicians. During the past few weeks, as fair weather fans jumped on the Bosox bandwagon, local musicians’ gigs were canceled. This takes funds from the pockets of musicians who don’t make a lot to start with. In a way, a cancellation beats the indignity of playing in front of a big screen TV that has a game on. Either way, it is not good. This sport’s mania seems to occur every couple of months, be it football, basketball, hockey or whatever sporting event is temporarily exciting the mindless masses. Venue owners and music lovers should focus more on supporting local, working musicians instead of pumping more into the already wealthy sports machine. Remember folks, IT’S JUST A GAME! What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Well, most of what happens. To the surprise of many of my friends and myself, I was in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. It was never on my list of places to go.
