We only completed one of our scheduled fi xtures against Crawley last season, the away game played on the 26th October, as the 4th April return match was one of 16 that fell victim to the Covid-19 lockdown. This was another case of what could have been for the club as its search for a fi rst league win went into November. Aleksandar Popov Accepted in the spring semester 2019 on the recommendation of Prof. em. Dr. Udo Fries and Prof. Dr. Daniel Schreier Zurich, 2019 Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the linguistic features of spoken English sports commentating. Sports commentary is a combination of narration and entertainment, and an easily recognisable form of communicating information to a mass audience. By examining a corpus of 160,000 words transcribed from live cricket, football, horse racing and tennis commentaries broadcast on UK television and radio, a quantitative and qualitative study is carried out for the purpose of determining the effects of three factors on the language produced by sports commentators: the nature of the sport, the nature of the broadcast medium and developments over time, defined by the interval between two sets of recordings (1996–2002 and 2013–2015).

A year ago, we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first-ever final in the old ‘European Cup’ and using that as a good excuse for some nostalgic reading of the history books. This season, the emphasis is well and truly on the future - the future of the game and the future of the people who play it. I’m referring to the new chapter in the regulations of this competition, where four places in each squad are earmarked for ‘locally-trained players’. You might not think that this is a major change. But, as time goes by, more places will be reserved for them and the 2006/07 campaign marks the first step in what I think is a very right direction. It was a subject we had discussed in great depth within our Executive Committee, within all sectors of the game and with people in political circles. And it is a decision which has my wholehearted support. Fortunately, I am by no means the only one who believes that talent needs to be developed and not just bought.

  • The Influence of Overseas Coaching and Management on the Occupational Subculture of English Professional Football
The influence of overseas coaching and management on the occupational subculture of English professional football Graham Smith A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2011 i Abstract As an area of academic and popular interest it is generally acknowledged that migrant British players and coaches were instrumental in football‟s global diffusion and that different technical and tactical emphases developed according to particular geographical locations and cultural milieu. As the twentieth century unfolded the trend reversed with increased inward flows of elite foreign playing and coaching labour into the upper tiers of UK football, challenging the distinctive and erstwhile dominant occupational culture of the English game. This study examines this process of sub-cultural adaptation. It is principally concerned with critical evaluation of the dynamics of occupational culture modification and any resultant tensions evidenced between expatriate and indigenous coaching talent and other interest groups operating within the higher echelons of English professional football. Owing to issues associated with access, the occupational subculture of elite level football is impenetrable to most researchers. Previous employment in professional football allowed this author to overcome such impediments, permitting access to a range of high status national and international players and coaches affecting and affected by occupational sub-cultural change (n=25). This enabled the deployment of a distinctive ethnographic paradigm combining insider knowledge and grounded experience with academic orthodoxy. The ensuing study is built upon critical analysis of rich data collected in semi-structured interviews, adding a fresh dimension to understanding the impact of globalisation on top tier professional English football.

Student No: 14210010 THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MANAGEMENT FUNCTION IN PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL IN ENGLAND Timothy M. June, 2020 Declaration I hereby certify that this material, which I now submit for assessment on the programme of study leading to the award of Doctor of Philosophy, is entirely my own work, that I have exercised reasonable care to ensure that the work is original and does not to the best of my knowledge breach any law of copyright and has not been taken from the work of others save and to the extent that such work has been cited and acknowledged within the text of my work. Signed: Candidate ID No. 14210010 Date: 26th June 2020. i Abstract This thesis is a study of the development of the management function in professional association football in England from the earliest days of codified and organised football to the present day. I have deployed the theoretical lens of figurational sociology, as formulated and described by Norbert Elias and his followers, notably Eric Dunning. This requires identification and analysis of the interdependencies and power relationships between the emergent function of football management and others forming the broader football figuration. As the game became a professional sport, the manager figure did not exist. Administrators eventually had their title changed from secretary to secretary-manager. In time this became simply ‘manager.’ The primary interdependencies were those of the manager with owners/directors and also with players.

MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION OF MANAGERIAL EFFICIENCY IN ENGLISH LEAGUE FOOTBALL: A STOCHASTIC FRONTIER ANALYSIS being a thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Hull by Peter Michael Dawson B.Sc. (Bradford) February 2000 The secret of being a good manager is to keep the five players who hate you from the half-dozen who are undecided. Jock Stein (King and Kelly, 1997) Coaching is for kids. If a player can't trap a ball and pass it by the time he's in the team, he shouldn't be there in the first place. At Derby, I told Roy McFarland to go and get his bloody hair cut; that's coaching at top level. Brian Clough (King and Kelly, 1997) No coach can guarantee results, you can only guarantee a way of playing. Results are in the hands of fate.
