NOSING AHEAD To the naked eye, Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}) looked beaten as he flashed past the post with Bated Breath (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Hoof It (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}) at the end of yesterday=s G1 Haydock Sprint Cup, and even after he had been called the winner, had to survive a lengthy stewards= inquiry. After much deliberation, the officials left him in first place, and it was Group 1 number four for Khalifa Dasmal=s highly talented, but wayward 3-year-old. On a salvaging mission following a no-show in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Aug. 7, the winner of the G1 Prix Morny, G1 Middle Park S. and G1 July Cup rewarded his 4-1 favorite backers despite giving them plenty to worry about at the business end. In front under William Buick with a quarter mile remaining, the bay dived away from the whip both right and left and in so doing forced Hoof It to challenge around him late on. That rival=s head was in front before and after the line, but where the photo was taken, it was Dream Ahead who had out-pixeled Bated Breath with the desperately unlucky Hoof It as much as a head back in third despite being clear of the pair yards after the line.

Betfred Sprint Cup cont.

Dream Ahead=s raw talent has been clear to the eye from the first day he set foot on the track, but along with that was the similarly compelling evidence that he was far from straightforward. As erratic as he was impressive when streaking to a nine-length success on debut in a six-furlong Nottingham maiden on debut last July, he went west when in the clear in both the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville and G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket on his next two starts. It was the fact that he could run off a true line and still register a nine-length verdict over the G2 Coventry S. winner Strong Suit (Rahy) in the latter contest that persuaded the international handicappers to place him alongside (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). That decision attracted much derision from the press and public, as he had faded out of the picture behind the brilliant Juddmonte representative in the G1 Dewhurst S. in a first career defeat, but connections had put that down to the race coming up too quick after the Middle Park. He repeated that fifth placing behind his mighty generation leader in the G1 St James=s Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 14, but again the excuses came up as he was trying a mile which stretched him and was having his first start of the term. Under the skilled handling of first-time pilot Hayley Turner, he waltzed through the July 9 G1 July Cup with such presence that the sprint championship looked already wrapped up and tied with a bow, but it all unraveled with William Buick back aboard on his return visit to Deauville for the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Interfered with and crowded early on there, the imposing colt downed tools and was subsequently placed close to the front end throughout the early stages of this contest. Left in the clear passing the quarter pole, he was joined shortly after by Bated Breath, but his aversion to the whip sacrificed precious ground and Hoof It was hitting top stride in behind under Graham Gibbons. As he veered left inside the final 150 yards, Hoof It was forced to go the long way around, which undoubtedly cost him the race, but as he was eventually third, the stewards had little option than to let the result stand. AHe is a hard horse to judge, and if he=d lost, I would have said he threw it away as he wasn=t doing a tap in front and was running around,@ Buick explained. AIt was a very good training performance from David [Simcock] and the team to get him back from that disappointing effort last time.@ Added Simcock, AIt is a massive relief after France, as we thought we had him in great form for that race and so were scratching our heads. We rode him far more positively, and he battled very well and did everything well. It is very special for him to enhance his reputation and it means as much as the July Cup, as he was bouncing back.@ He added that the Oct. 2 G1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp or Ascot=s G2 British Champions Sprint S. Oct. 15 were the remaining options this term, with the Breeders= Cup possibly on the agenda in 2012.
