Seven new species of Recent springsnails belonging to the large genus Pyrgulopsis are described from California. Pyrgulopsis diablensis sp. nov., known from a single site in the San Joaquin Valley, P. longae sp. nov., known from a single site in the Great Basin (Lahontan system), and P. taylori sp. nov., narrowly endemic in one south-central coastal drainage, are related to a group of previously known western species also having terminal and penial glands on the penis. Pyrgulopsis eremica sp. nov., from the Great Basin and other interior drainages in northeast California, and P. greggi sp. nov., narrowly endemic in the Upper Kern River basin, differ from all other described congeners in lacking penial glands, and are considered to be derived from a group of western species having a small distal lobe and weakly developed terminal gland. Pyrgulopsis gibba sp. nov., known from a few sites in extreme northeastern California (Great Basin), has a unique complement of penial ornament consisting of terminal gland, Dg3, and ventral gland. Pyrgulopsis ventricosa sp. nov., narrowly endemic in the Clear Lake basin, is related to two previously described California species also having a full complement of glands on the penis (Pg, Tg, Dgl-3) and an enlarged bursa copulatrix. During time of deposition (early Late Pleis- tocene, late Khazarian regional substage), the area was situated in shallow water of the greatly expanded Caspian Sea. The fauna contains 24 species, of which 16 are endemic to the Pontocaspian region and 15 to the Caspian Sea. -

KLOMPMAKER Kiel, S., Hybertsen, F., Hyžný, M., and Klompmaker, A.A. 2020. Mollusks and a crustacean from early Oligocene methane- seep deposits in the Talara Basin, northern Peru. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 65 (1): 109–138. A total of 25 species of mollusks and crustaceans are reported from Oligocene seep deposits in the Talara Basin in north- ern Peru. Among these, 12 are identified to the species-level, including one new genus, six new species, and three new combinations. Pseudophopsis is introduced for medium-sized, elongate-oval kalenterid bivalves with a strong hinge plate and largely reduced hinge teeth, rough surface sculpture and lacking a pallial sinus. The new species include two bivalves, three gastropods, and one decapod crustacean: the protobranch bivalve Neilo altamirano and the vesicomyid bivalve Pleurophopsis talarensis; among the gastropods, the pyropeltid Pyropelta seca, the provannid Provanna pelada, and the hokkaidoconchid Ascheria salina; the new crustacean is the callianassid Eucalliax capsulasetaea. New combina- tions include the bivalves Conchocele tessaria, Lucinoma zapotalensis, and Pseudophopsis peruviana. Two species are shared with late Eocene to Oligocene seep faunas in Washington state, USA: Provanna antiqua and Colus sekiuensis; the Talara Basin fauna shares only genera, but no species with Oligocene seep fauna in other regions. Further noteworthy aspects of the molluscan fauna include the remarkable diversity of four limpet species, the oldest record of the cocculinid Coccopigya, and the youngest record of the largely seep-restricted genus Ascheria. -

More than 1,000 nominal species bear simple plesiomorphic shells, whose variability is high and overlapping between the taxa, and the soft part morphology and anatomy of the group is simplified because of miniaturization, and unified, as a result of necessary ad- aptations to the life in freshwater habitats (osmoregulation, internal fertilization and eggs rich in yolk and within the capsules). The ad- aptations arose parallel, thus represent homoplasies. All the above facts make it necessary to use molecular markers in species dis- crimination, although this should be done carefully, considering ge- netic distances calibrated at low taxonomic level. Most valvatiform genera of the gastropod family Hydrobiidae are narrow-range taxa. One exception is the genus Arganiella, which is comprised of three congeners: the type species A. pescei from the Apennine Peninsula, A. wolfi from the Iberian Peninsula and A. tabanensis from the Balkans. The genus assignment of the latter two species was based on morphological similarities with A. pescei in the shell, operculum, radula and genitalia. Given that the morphology of hydrobiids is sometimes susceptible to convergence, this study re-evaluates the taxonomic status of species of Arganiella by analysing mitochondrial (mtCOI) and nuclear (18S rRNA) sequences of topotypes or near topotypes to infer their phylogenetic position. -
