But it’s rewarding.’ Rick Fourij lives in the South Australian town of Clare. It’s worth a thought . . . That’s the power of ENGAGEMENT! When Rick started, he could hardly walk even one metre without stopping to sit down. Now he walks up to 14 kilometres every day! 2 koonga avenue, prospect, sa e [email protected] w www.prescottcollege.com.au p 08 8269 1655 “Learning is not a spectator sport.” - Anonymous In almost any town in you will find a football oval, and at some time on the weekend during winter there will be a crowd gathered around its edges, watching the players battling for supremacy. Who are the ones that are engaged in the game? The spectators may be interested, but in reality, they can do little to impact the result. Even coaches have marginal influence once the game starts; only the players determine the outcome. The process of learning is analogous to this game. It is only when students become “the players” that they have the opportunity to influence their outcomes. While support from others (parents and teachers, for example) can assist, it is only when a student engages in learning that development will take place. In terms of research, engagement in learning is considered important because: - There is a strong link between behavioural engagement and academic achievement. - Behavioural engagement builds resilience. Year 11 students learning about ellipses in Maths class (on - Engagement in school positively impacts post-school a mufti day) outcomes. - Success comes from a combination of engagement and effort. A student who is engaged in their learning for a particular class would demonstrate that by: - Active (rather than passive) participation in class activities. - Following up on the subject outside of the classroom. - Having a positive attitude towards the subject. - Being proactive in seeking out ways to improve. - Using feedback from teacher and peers as a way to drive learning. - Setting clear learning goals (both medium and long term). Some suggestions for parents to encourage engagement with learning: - Discuss your child’s learning with them. - Support them with their homework (don’t do it for them, though). - Ask them to explain what they are doing in class to you (rather than ask Yes/No questions). - Encourage them to develop goals for their learning - for specific subjects and also overall goals. - Never give your child an “out” by telling them you were poor at this subject (Maths, English, Physical Education, etc.). This can suggest that you can’t, and don’t, expect them to do well in it. Perhaps the last word should go to Solomon, whom the Bible describes as the wisest man who ever lived, who stated that “Whatever you do, do well.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10, NLTse).
