Enews – Summer 2017

IN THIS ISSUE Welcome to Summer 2017 Newsletter Back to top

Welcome to Summer 2017 This summer’s Newsletter signifies that I have been in post for almost a year, and the Newsletter topsy-turvy nature of the job means that I am reporting on the usual eclectic mix of great events, substantial achievements, quirky accomplishments and unexpected OC Society Recent Events developments.

OC News Since I last wrote, the College has decided to open a new girls’ house [desperately needed] as soon as this September, and many thanks to those in the OC Community OC Sporting News who have provided much needed financial assistance with this project. The slightly OC Arts irritating consequence of the chosen location for this expansion was that our office has had to move, and doing this in May, just after an audit and the Reunion, was quite In Memoriam stressful! But we are now happily ensconced on the edge of the Close, in what is designated The Sixth Form Centre, and was previously the San … and, before that, I Miscellanea believe it served as lodgings for senior boys – that’s probably an era we would be wise not to investigate too closely! 23 Sep 30 Years of Girls make The Society compliant with legislation e.g. regarding data and insurance, but rest Reunion assured that with the splendid support of Lucy Nash in particular, and also the indispensable Jeremy Pickles and Laura Adams, we are looking to evolve what we do 7 Oct OC Lunch prior to to provide opportunities for OCs to meet and celebrate friendships old and new. To this Governors Cup end, both the Bristol and Branches have undertaken to review what they offer, match and make it more appealing to a wider range of OCs. We hope that this meets with 10 Oct Concert to your approval, and that it inspires some of you who have become “detached” to inaugurate the re-engage with Clifton in one way or another. The first shoots of what to expect can be refurbished organ gleaned from the contents of this Newsletter. 13 Oct Cardiff Dinner It is also important that I formally announce that the 2018 Reunion [for those in the top age bracket!] will no longer be a Saturday affair – we are aiming to do lunch in the 24 Oct Tel Aviv Reunion marquee on the Thursday [May 24th] before Commem, with a programme both before and after that will hopefully drag you back to Clifton! Younger age cohorts can expect to FORWARD TO A retain the “Saturday tradition”, but we felt that the 70+ brigade would derive far more from this new initiative. Further details will follow in due course. FRIEND Finally, two brief announcements to wrap things up: first, what is known in the office as Know someone who might be the PIF Prize [for a rapid return of the Personal Information Form last autumn] goes to interested in this email? Why Mark Jason [PH -1989]; and secondly, OCs might be interested to read the Head’s not forward this email to them. most recent Newsletter by clicking here. If you have recently moved house or changed your email Commem – 27 May 2017 address, please contact the office on The school managed to celebrate Commem [email protected] in style, and although the sun did not shine, the rain did not fall! An entertaining and thought provoking sermon in Chapel was expertly delivered by Michael Crick [Channel 4 News]; “a mixed bag” of Hon. OCs enjoyed an excellent lunch in the SCR; and an OC XI resembling a rogues’ gallery gave the College XI a run for their money in a competitive 20/20 match on The Close.

Polack’s Reunion – 10 May 2017

A crowd [or should that be “tribe”?] of more than 80 Old Polackians gathered at the Westminster Synagogue to reminisce and hear about plans for the future, over drinks and canapes. The Head and the Chairman of PHET set the scene, Madeleine Panto [OH 2016] spoke of her recent experience of life at the school, and Lauren Chiren [i/c Jewish Life at Clifton] outlined forthcoming developments. It was an excellent occasion, with pupils of every Housemaster going back to Albert Polack in attendance. Polack’s was an extraordinary institution, and this occasion served as a perfect reminder of that truth.

Reunion for those who left 1993-2001 – 6 May 2017

On May 6th, the College hosted a marvellous reunion for those who left the school in the 1990's. The proceedings got underway with a Chapel service at 11.30, at which Jez Walters [SH 1997] preached with clarity, humour and insight, lightly dusted with nostalgia: he earned a round of applause from the school, a rare honour!

Drinks and an excellent lunch followed, and the afternoon provided an opportunity to see those parts of the school that have changed so much in the last 20 years, notably the Music School, the Science School and 4/5 Worcester Road. The re-located

Watson's also drew gasps from the traditionalists among the 100 or so returning OCs, and there was a remarkable trip down memory lane as Lucy Nash hosted a tour of the Pre, where some of the attendees had started as boarders in the mid 1980's!

The XI playing King's Taunton provided a suitable backdrop to tea taken largely on the parapet, and the evening's festivities kicked off at 7.00 pm. The highlights were undoubtedly a sparkling address from the Head Master, and a hilarious after dinner speech from Pat Chatterton [SH 1996]. But the abiding memory of the evening will be of the fun, the camaraderie and the simple enjoyment afforded by the opportunity to catch up with old friends. One OC summed it up beautifully in this note of thanks:

"I think the day went beyond any of our expectations. It was amazing to catch up with everyone and it really was like we'd never been away."

1862 Lunch – 5 May 2017

Jeremy Pickles’ fourth annual lunch for members of the 1862 Club was a great success. It was very well attended by those who have pledged money to the College in their wills. It provided a marvellous opportunity to catch up with old friends and hear from the Head Master a clear statement of intent about where the school is going.

Lunch at B & C Golf Club – 21 April 2017

The Bristol Branch organized a wonderful early summer lunch for 25 OCs at the B & C. It was suitably informal and a throwback to a different era i.e. alcohol was consumed at lunchtime during the working week! It was great to see so many “new” faces. Hopefully, support for further Bristol Branch initiatives will be equally lively!

New York Dinner – 6 April 2017

Graeme McEvoy [SH 1987] organized an excellent dinner at The Penn Club for 25 OCs, with fundraising at the top of the agenda. $60000 was raised and will certainly be put to good use. The following evening there was a thoroughly enjoyable “informal drinks” at the St Cloud Bar off Times Square – the Secretary can confirm that a round of G&T’s in Manhattan is considerably more expensive than in Westbury on-Trym!

Redgrave Gala – 19 March 2017

A stellar night at the Redgrave Theatre 50th Birthday Gala.

All those who participated and the many guests at the Redgrave celebration were treated to an evening which will live long in the memory and we are indebted to all those OCs and pupils who contributed performances,

as well as the school caterers.

“How do you hold a dinner in a theatre?”…. I was asked by many prior to the event, fearing a TV dinner on their lap!

Well, the vision was to seat diners on the stage and erect a performance platform over the seating. This innovation worked and provided a unique experience for all involved.

Starting in the Joseph Cooper Music school with a champagne reception and chance to see archivist Dr Knighton’s retrospective exhibition of drama across the years. The Theatre school students kicked the evening off in a rousing way. Everyone then made their way over to the Redgrave and thus unfolded a marvellous three hours of eclectic entertainment and fine dining.

Our guest of honour Jemma Redgrave welcomed everyone and then performances from OCs across the years and former staff kept the entertainment rolling until the end. Performances include songs from the shows, Shakespeare monologues , Dance, Monty Python and ‘Yes Head Master’ sketches.

All profits from the evening go towards the Trevor Howard Scholarship for the performing arts.

Newcastle and Leeds – 9/10 March 2017

The Secretary undertook a journey into the heart of northern darkness, to reconnect with his roots and assess the wellbeing of OCs north of Birmingham! The Leeds “informal” was expertly organized by Chris Gibbs [ST 1975] and well attended by those no longer living the student life; Newcastle’s organizer was Henry Watson [NT 2014] and, by contrast, the Secretary was the oldest person in the pub by 30 years! Nonetheless, it was a “double header” worth repeating in the future.

Oxford Dinner – 27 February 2017

Oxford Dinner – a bumper crop of more than 40 OCs gathered in Exeter College and enjoyed an excellent evening … .a Choral Recital in the Chapel, drinks in the Rector's Drawing Room, dinner in Hall and further refreshments in the Undercroft. Splendid – and many thanks in particular are owed to the organizers- in-chief, Bart Thiede [SH 2015] and Will Slatton [ET 2015].

Networking Breakfasts

It should be noted that there have been 4 “Networking Breakfasts” in the Pavilion since the last Newsletter. These are very sociable and enjoyable events, for OCs and parents, so please contact the office if you want to know more.

Alan Bailey (ET 1991)

On Tuesday 21st March Alan Bailey was awarded a Lord Mayor’s medal at the Mansion House for his various voluntary roles to promote Bristol, support enterprise and skills, raise awareness of sustainability and help the Bristol region become a sustainable and thriving economy. After 10 years of Chairing the Low Carbon South West network and 20 years of volunteering on numerous Boards and initiatives, it is lovely for him to be awarded this civic honour by his home city.

Julian Matthews (WiH 1983) – Tiger Nation

Julian is leading a charity bike ride for Tiger Conservation …. Please follow the link if you are interested in supporting the project. It’s not that different from a bit of mountain biking in Leigh Woods!

Lea Van Der Zwalmen (WT 2015)

Congratulations to Lea, who has retained her Rackets World Title in 2017.

(Pictured here with Reggie Williams, Rackets Pro at Clifton College.)

James Telling (ET 2007) & Freddie Kalfayan (ET 2012)

James and Freddie entered the British Open Rackets Doubles at Queens – here is James’ post tournament assessment:

"Given the ridiculously tough first round we were given, our performance was not bad! We lost 4-1 to a pair who had one of the best players in the world with a steady partner. We should have won another game but bottled it as you can so easily do in rackets! However, very good fun nonetheless! Thanks for the support!"

OCFC

Chairman’s Report (Adam Graveney – NT 2001)

“Another season done, another trophy won, another promotion secured and yet I still feel this season could have been even better.

I say that because the club was in a situation for both teams to win more silverware this

season. Sadly, the 1st team came up short, losing in the final of the Norman Hardy Cup. Although the 1st team had a mixed showing in the league, they really showed their true form in the Cup, knocking out the 1st Division winners Sneyd Park in the early rounds – one of the highlights of the season. I firmly believe the foundations are in place to push for league honours and the work Dan Grech (SH 2005) has done over the last couple of seasons should hopefully help the next person stepping up to run the 1st team in 2017/18. The shining light in the club this year was the reserve team led by Maxwell Hope (NT 1998), with a few “senior pros” behind him. Falling twice in semi finals in their respective cups, they would not be denied in the league, winning the 3rd division on the last day of the season. A great team spirit and some cracking results meant they deservedly won promotion to division 2.”

Ryan Bresnahan Memorial Hockey – OCs vs The School

A strong OC XI took on the school at the end of March in this annual fixture, played in memory of Ryan Bresnahan (MH). The OCs recorded a 2-1 victory, and, more importantly, helped to keep the charity, A Life for a Cure, very much in the Clifton consciousness.

David Henshaw (BH 1965) – Executive Producer

Channel 4′s current affairs docuseries ‘Dispatches’ is slated to investigate the return of disgraced British doctor Andrew Wakefield.

Wakefield was removed from the UK medical register for a fraudulent 1998 research paper that supported the discredited claim that linked the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism.

In Trump, The Doctor and the Vaccine Scandal, reporter Cathy Newman will look to uncover the links between the anti-science agenda of President Donald Trump and the anti-vax movement, while also revealing how Minnesota is currently experiencing the largest outbreak of Measles since the disease was eradicated in 2000.
