Calvinist Natural Law and the Ultimate Good
Vol 5 The Western Australian Jurist 153 CALVINIST NATURAL LAW AND THE ULTIMATE GOOD * CONSTANCE YOUNGWON LEE ABSTRACT Calvin’s natural law theory is premised on the sovereignty of God. In natural law terms, the ‘sovereignty of God’ doctrine prescribes that the normative standards for positive law originate from God alone. God is the sole measure of the ‘good’. This emphasis allows for a sharp separation between normative and descriptive dimensions. In this context, it would be a logical fallacy to maintain that anything humanly appointed can attain the status of self- evidence. However, in recent years, new natural law theorists have been guilty of conflating the normative and descriptive dimensions – a distinction that is critical to the discipline of natural law. This may stretch as far back to Aquinas who set human participation in the goods (‘practical reason’) as the rightful starting place for natural law. This paper explores Calvin’s natural law theory to show how his concept of ‘the ultimate good’ harnesses the potential to restore natural law theory to its proper order. By postulating a transcendent standard in terms of ‘the ultimate good’ – God Himself – Calvin’s natural law provides a philosophical framework for compelling positive laws in the pursuit of a higher morality. Kittelson with Ken Schurb 119 The Sacramental Presence in Lutheran Orthodoxy Eugene E Klug For Luther the doctrine of the Real Presence was one of the crucial issues of the Reformation. There is no way of understand- ing what went on in the years following his death, particularly in the lives and theology of the orthodox teachers of the Lutheran church, unless the platform on which Luther stood is clearly recog- nized. Luther had gone to the Marburg colioquy of 1529 with minimal expectations. In later years he reflected on the outcome of that discussion with Zwingli, noting that in spite of everything there had been considerable convergence except on the presence of Christ's body and blood in the Sacrament. These thoughts are contained in his BriefCor&ssionconcerning the Holy Sacmment of 1544. "With considerable hope we departed from Marburg:' Luther comments, "because they agreed to all the Christian articles of the faith:' and even "in this article of the holy sacrament they also abandoned their previous error" (that it was merely bread), and "it seemed as if they would in time share our point of view altogether!" This result was not to be, as history records. With all the might that was in him Luther protested loudly throughout his life against any diminution of Christ's body and blood in the Sacrament.' Probably none of Luther's works played as large a role as did his famous "Great Confession" of 1528, the Co~kssionconcerning Christ's Supper. -
Competing Views of Original Sin and Associated Arguments and Meanings
CHAPTER TWO COMPETING VIEWS OF ORIGINAL SIN AND ASSOCIATED ARGUMENTS AND MEANINGS The dispute over the definition of original sin, or more precisely, Matthias Flacius Illyricus’s1 controversial explanation of this doctrine, originated at the University of Jena in 1560 among the highest levels of the Lutheran academic world. It did not enter the territory of Mansfeld until a decade later. There it first claimed the attention of those clerics who operated in intellectual circles that went beyond the territory’s borders. But divisions within this ecclesiastical leadership soon spread throughout the territory’s entire pastorate. It may seem strange to begin a discussion of lay religiosity with elite theologians debating abstract points of doctrine in ivory towers. But in order to understand why the laity of Mansfeld became deeply involved in the controversy, it is important to start at the beginning with the central intellectual premise, and work outward to the various meanings and connotations it came to encompass. Only then can the laity’s association with one side or the other begin to make sense. The assumption here is that a purely intellectual weighing of the validity of the two definitions of original sin was not the only aspect of the debate 1 Matthias Flacius Illyricus (1520–1575) was born in Croatia, but studied in Venice, Basel, and Tübingen, before matriculating in Wittenberg in 1541. He eventu- ally became a professor of Hebrew there, where he was influenced by both Luther and Melanchthon, the former particularly with regard to pastoral care, the latter with regard to theology. After Emperor Charles V’s defeat of the Lutheran princes in the Schmalkald War (1547), as Melanchthon was urging a conciliatory policy, Flacius took up the banner of complete resistance. -

Steven O’Malley, Instructor Class Description and Objectives: An examination of the life and thought of John Calvin, with primary attention given to the study of his Institutes of the Christian Religion. Our purpose is to gain a working knowledge of Calvin’s theology in its historical context, that will enable the student to interact with central themes of Calvin’s thought as they relate to the responsibilities of Christian ministry. Hopefully the student may also be assisted in advancing the dialogical and ecumenical objectives of attaining greater common understanding between the Reformed and Wesleyan/Arminian communities of faith.
