Male Kid (5/5) I look forward to meeting up with you all soon. 1st Sunnydene Logan best kid Angie Prout Very kind regards 2nd Gallaine Mazda Nigel Julian 3rd Gallaine Cherokee Nigel Julian th Julia Clarke 4 Hendra Harley Odette Eddy 5th Hendra Lovejoy Odette Eddy Adult Female (9/10) Secretary's Notes 1st Sunnydene Paris Rob Prout 2nd Gallaine Esme Nigel Julian rd Glass half full or glass half empty? When things go wrong it’s easy to be 3 Blendylake Freydis Mrs L Cole despondent but “plan B” often gives a solution and raises morale. 4th Gallaine Willow Dawn Jackson 5th Lufflands Morwenna Mrs H Keeble Sometimes we ride a roller coaster of emotions, tossed by the vagaries of 6th Gallaine Violet Nigel Julian fate or our own ill- judged decisions. (Bit heavy that, so let me lighten the 7th Lufflands Misty Mrs H Keeble mood!) 8th Barhamsmill Chance Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach 9th Lufflands Maple Mrs H Keeble Getting ready, early morning on the day of the recent Male, Youngstock & Pygmy Show, I decided to have a tin of mackerel fillets for my breakfast, Veteran Female (2/2) quick and easy. However, when I drained the surrounding sunflower oil 1st Treverbyn Flossie Rob Prout nd directly from the tin, into the Rayburn firebox…. Yes, you guessed it…… all 2 Sunnydene Amy Odette Eddy the fish fillets slid into the fire! (glass half empty) Bring on “plan B”. I Male Kid (5/6) brewed a coffee and decided to make porridge. (glass half full) Just as I 1st Sunnydene Logan Rob Prout was about to settle to eat it, I noticed the kitchen clock was horribly wrong. 2nd Gallaine Cherokee Nigel Julian There was no time to eat or drink anything (glass half empty). I had 3rd Gallaine Mazda Nigel Julian promised to help load a competitor’s male goats into the trailer ready for 4th Hendra Lovejoy Odette Eddy the Show and I didn’t want to be late. Dashing from home, I managed to th 5 Hendra Harley Odette Eddy make up some time on the empty roads and we eventually arrived at the Buckling (3/3) show, to find a steaming urn and Julia offering drinks of coffee or tea. 1st Sunnydene Shazam Rob Prout (glass half full, metaphorically of course, ‘cos the cup of coffee was full to 2nd Gallaine Imp Nigel Julian the brim and oh so welcome). 3rd Gallaine Sprite Nigel Julian It was a lovely idea to make hot drinks available. Thank you Julia, for Adult Male (3/3) thinking of it and thank you, Jenny May for providing the electricity to make 1st Heatherview Harper Rob Prout it happen. We really do owe Jenny a debt of gratitude for making space in 2nd Gallaine Bongo Nigel Julian rd her warehouse to give us a perfect indoor venue. It was just what was 3 Marshview Sultan Odette Eddy needed on a showery day. Dam & Daughter (5/6) The Boer goats proved an interesting addition to the show. I could not 1st Treverbyn Flossie Rob Prout 2nd Blendylake Freydis Mrs L Cole believe the size of the “kids”! 3rd Lufflands Misty Mrs H Keeble 4th Barhamsmill Chance Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach Don’t forget to attend the AGM. There may be changes to be made and a 5th Lufflands Maple Mrs H Keeble high attendance would more accurately represent the wishes of the whole membership, and not just the small minority who regularly turn up. Sire & Progeny (1/2) 1st Gallaine Bongo Nigel Julian HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE AGM on Saturday 15th October, Best Pet 1st Gemstone Callista Mrs L Cole 2nd Max Odette Eddy June. Best in Show Sunnydene Paris Reserve Best in Show Heatherview Harper Jean Gordon Macleod Stithians Show 2016 27th May 1926 - 29th June 2016 th 11 July 2016 Judge : Mrs Pat Mercer – Carmarthenshire Jean Gordon Macleod died a month after her 90th birthday. She was born in the Lake District at the head of the Langdale Valley hence her herd name of Langdale. Her parents moved to Dorset while she was a toddler and her life was spent in the South West but she Secretary : Mrs Angie Prout said she always felt as though she was going home whenever she crossed the Scottish border. Pygmy Results I was friends with Jean for just under twenty years although some of our founder members knew and showed with her for over forty. Jean was a great correspondent. I Junior Handler (4/4) wrote something for the Clovenhoof magazine and she wrote commenting on it. I wrote 1st Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach to thank her and she wrote back and soon we were corresponding at least once a week. 2nd Charlotte Johns She was a great one for her coach trips after giving up her goats in her seventies, and did 3rd Darcey Burley several every year including some to where I picked her up and brought her 4th Dillan Burley back to Carbis for lunch and high tea as she called it. Her visit to me often included a visit to Jean and Keith Wilshaw's farm to see their goats and while she was more steady Pet (3/3) on her feet we would walk over there and take my goats out into one of Keith's fields 1st Gemstone Callista Mrs L Cole where she delighted in the antics of the black and white Devils as she called the British 2nd Emma Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach alpines! 3rd Dixie Dawn Jackson She mastered the computer she was given, no mean feat for someone well into their seventies and she enjoyed corresponding by e-mail with people in Australia and Canada Wether (6/6) st and of course people in the British clubs, she was a member of several. Her goats were 1 Max Odette Eddy nd well known, as was she, everyone seems to have a tale or two to tell about the redoubt- 2 Billy Dawn Jackson rd able Miss Macleod. Perhaps some of our members might like to recount a story or two for 3 Marshland Alfred Mrs H Keeble th our magazine, I'm sure some of the younger members would like to hear tales of shows 4 Poniou Alfie Dawn Jackson th long past and how things were. 5 Hendra Oscar Odette Eddy th For someone who was told she would be blind by the time she was a teenager and 6 Gromit Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach having spent an unhappy few years at boarding school where she learned to touch type, she did incredibly well driving hundreds of miles in a van with her goats in the back, Female Kid (8/8) st camping at the shows or sleeping in a clobber pen. She loved her animals and bred some 1 Gallaine Rumer Nigel Julian 2nd Blendylake Meriel Mrs L Cole amazing goats, also Jack Russell terriers. One story people tell is of how she could stand rd her male goat up in the ring and then step away from it to check its placement. I found 3 Sunnydene Tangela Rob Prout th that incredible but some people said the goat simply wouldn't dare move while Jean was 4 Marshland Aswen Mrs H Keeble 5th Sunnydene Chantilly Rob Prout assessing it with her critical eye! th I enjoyed her friendship and I hope she enjoyed mine. I was honoured that she gave 6 Marshland Alyssa Mrs H Keeble 7th Celandine Grace Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach me her large collection of goat models as she wanted someone who appreciated them to th have them. I certainly do, just as I appreciated her. R.I.P Jean, you won't be forgotten. 8 Hendra Kizzy Odette Eddy Ann Munson Goatling (6/6) 1st Hilltop Haidee Mrs L Cole 2nd Gallaine Poloma Nigel Julian 3rd Broomhouse Mary Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach 4th Gallaine Faith Nigel Julian 5th Gemstone Rosaline Odette Eddy 6th Gallaine Freda Gabriella Lea-Wurzbach

life after laminitis

We have a goat, 50:50 AN :BS. called Pretty, She was mated to an AN, and continued to live out in the field on her goatling rations until 20th Feb, when she was brought in, as was her stable mate, an AN called Nougat. Their feed was increased slowly in line with their increasing girth, but not on to full milkers rations. Pretty had a due date of 8th March, but within a couple of days she developed acute laminitis, but Nougat did not and remained very healthy . Pretty kidded on 10th March, one live and one stillborn....stillborn was delivered second, and I wondered if it had been 'suffocated' by the weight of Pretty's rumen and the other kid??. I had read about treating inflammation with a Turmeric based product called Golden Paste, so decided to give it a try....I made some and started her on it, she had her rations cut....no concentrates, just hay and a handful of barley with the Golden Paste mixed into it. When she was 3 weeks post kidding I had a friend come in to trim her feet...he had one h*ll of a job!! I continued with her diet and left her kid on her as milking was not practical, plus I thought that leaving a kid on would 'drain' some nourishment...... Her feet were trimmed again 4 weeks later and were softer, and in addition, a growth interruption could be seen on the horn. Two weeks before Royal Cornwall, she and her Kid were turned out into the field, with the only food being grass and browsings, and with a bucket of Happy Hoof to be shared with the other field 'crew'. She has today been running in the field, her shoulders have 'rotated' back to a pre-laminitic position and to all intents and purposes, she has fully recovered. I will not put her in kid again, as I feel that the risk to her is too great, and she can live out with our other odds and ends! They are a Boer and her Boer/ Bagot cross from last year...as they get on well together. In the winter, all pregnant goats come in to the main goat shed, but non-productive goats live out with 24 hour access to a 2 Ac field and are fed small amounts of concentrates and ad-lib hay...they have several sheds, with deep straw beds to sleep in. Pretty mixes with the milkers, kids and goatlings( who also live out) all day , come rain or shine, and gets lots of attention. I have her great grand -ma, Gremlin as a milker...she kidded in 2014 and is still putting 5Kg in the bucket, so we can afford to 'lose' a milker!!!!! Sue Smith

Soldiers from the Royal Welsh have taken part in a parade - joined by L/Cpl Shenkin, the regimental goat.

He led the parade of soldiers along Llandudno promenade to re-affirm the Freedom of the County of Conwy. Hundreds of residents and holidaymakers turned out to see the march in the shadow of the Great Orme headland, where Kashmir goats are an attraction. The Royal goat tradition began in 1844 when Queen Victoria presented the Royal Welch Fusiliers with its first one. The soldiers were accompanied by the Regimental Band of The Royal Welsh, and paraded with colours flying, bayonets fixed and drums beating.
